Update 89.0 caused many of my sites to malfunction. I went back to the previous version and everything runs fine.

If I can find the file with all my data, the instructions have shown me how to copy it to my desktop and then import it into the browser. I just don't know what I'm looking at or which buttons to push for fear of losing more.

The file called places.sqlite contains the library of bookmarks.

This file is located in each profile folder.

If the file is deleted (or something) then the profile will have no bookmarks.

So figuring out which places.sqlite has bookmarks for you will be kind of tricky.

The plan i have is for you to know which folder is your current default one - which needs to be updated with bookmarks.

Then from another profile folder, simply copy places.sqlite from it and over to the default profile. This will overwrite the empty places.sqlite

Then launch your FireFox and see if the default profile has been populated with bookmarks.

From my perspective, it is 100% impossible to see/understand what folders and files you still have for your FireFox's.

But i think the best profile to copy the file from would be the one with the most recent date, like on the morning before the update of FF occurred. Then work backwards with places.sqlite files that are older.

In any case, the above should be kind of easy though tedious. But if succesfful with getting your bookmarks back (or most of them), it will be worth while.

Incidentally, there is also (or should be) a folder in each FireFox profile that has backup in its file name. You have said that you are only seeing 4 or 5 folders here and there. So i guess there is no backup folder seen anywhere in your FireFox's folders?

I copied the places.sqlite file from the old profile and pasted it into the current one. It is a document file in the old profile, but pastes as a TextEdit into the new one. I also copied the bookmarkbackups and pasted them over. The library icon in the tab didn't populate, but I have a bunch of the really old bookmarks under the drop down from the bookmarks button in the main tool bar.

well, at least we got some of the bookmarks back for you, albeit ancient ones.  :-)

i dont know mobygrape?

the file places.sqlite sounds like it pasted like places.sqlite.txt ?

is it possible that once its pasted, you can rename it and remove the txt ?

i'm afraid i am running out of options for you.

incidentally, i did a little checking around about mac's.

does your mac o.s. have a time machine or backup/restore mechanism? perhaps, not. but if so, maybe your machine can be returned back in time to a functional state. and then we will have the opportunity to hinder the castatrophe you have been experiencing.

btw: i truly appreciate your loyalty to FF and all the time your are inputting into this issue.

hello nicolas9

can you please create a new thread for your issue? we would like to know what is your operating system and version of FF. And then we would like to understand what exactly has occurred on your machine.  :-)

The places.sqlite file didn't change the extension, just the file type. It pasted as a copy and I renamed the original so that the system would see the one I pasted, but no help. I pulled the version 88 from my time machine in the first place, but when it overwrote the 89 something must have been deleted. This seems possible because of the screen stating that the profile does not migrate. I will try to delete all of the recent files and installations and restore another one from my time machine. I'll let you know what happens.

Hi Nicolas. All of the information that you want is earlier in this thread. There are two pages. If you are not using a MAC, then don't bother.

ok. its good to know you have a time machine.

what i think might be happening though, is that may be only restoring some of the FF files and folders but not all. Perhaps, this is why there seems to be issues in the continuity of the FF system.

how do you feel about simply returning the entire machine back in time? is it possible? if so, i think this would be the best course to take. But again, i am not sitting in your chair. So you would know best.

I'm on mac, so I should be able to help. Files from Firefox 89 will not work on older versions.

Do you remember what directories you restored when you tried to downgrade?

Restoring the entire system would erase my past several days of new data in all my programs and I cannot do that. You are correct in your assumption, however. I just restored the application by overwriting the newer one which left the system files empty and as Chris has noted, not usable. I am going to take a break until tomorrow and try cleaning/deleting the profiles before restoring. I will make copies of everything just to be safe. Chris - do you have suggestions as to specific files and directories? I appreciate any advice.
