(Ubuntu 20.10 NUC 7I5 32 gig memory) I had (firefox) version 83.02 installed and working.

Today I turned on the machine, loaded Firefox and.....

It sort of crashed. I selected "reload Firefox" and things went a bit weird.

Today is 24 Dec 2020. I have had the machine on a few times since 15 Dec 2020.

Firefox restarted and YUCK! it was horrible! I had the DARK theme chosen and somehow it restarted in the other one which is ..... not dark.

The cursor is annoying at times when you are typing and I try to ignore it as much as possible, but since that which just happened I noticed the cursor is now changing its look as I move around a web page.

Looking at the release notes there is no mention of this being done.

I can't find anything in the settings/preferences/config/what ever to control the cursor. But that aside: this didn't used to happen. (No big. Just mentioning it)

If I move over a link the cursor changes from what it is to a hand (left pointing).

Is this now normal?

Are you currently using a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution? Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Yes, it is quite normal if the cursor changes from the arrow that you see as the default pointer to a hand when you hover a link, so you can see that this is a link. In a text area the mouse pointer will be a vertical bar (large 'I'). This has always been the case, but the actual appearance might depend on what display manager and Linux theme you use.

Thanks guys.

Appreciated.

Now the resulting question:

Ok, I go into the manager thing for Ubuntu and remove firefox.

I then go and install it form the link provided.

Do I keep my sessions and book marks and all that stuff?

Sorry, I have just had a lot of fun with the machine as a whole and am a bit cautious just now.

Or can I just go to that link and install firefox over the existing install?

Firefox should detect the old profile and use it.

Firefox will likely refuse to use the old profile because it is locked against the old installation path. You can remove compatibility.ini in the profile or use the -allow-downgrade command line switch.

Err, sorry. It is 09:35 local here.....

Allow-downgrade!!??

That is confusing. I installed (am using) the one which comes with ubuntu and it has this ...... quirk.

It was said that I need to install the real version and when I do that I have to ....allow-downgrade?

That version is altered from the version that Mozilla would give you.

Sorry, but I feel the question is begging to be asked:

Why would ubuntu modify the version they give and not just use the official one?

Though I get it that that question is probably better answered by ubuntu than here. But I feel it still needs to be asked.

You would need to ask them.
