It's a simple question: Why Firefox enforces by default extensions like Amazon, Bing, eBay, Google ? What really these extensions do?

Paradox#1: Firefox enforces to use those totally insecurity and unreliable companies! Paradox #2: Firefox don't even show those extensions mentioned above! Paradox #3: Even when I remove them from "Options->Search Engines" these ones keep being enabled and hidden! Paradox #4: Third party program needed to manage those Firefox hidden extensions! I Disable all above extensions by "CCleaner" and: Paradox #5: they comes back by default in every Firefox damn update!

I wish I'm wrong I would pleased if someone explain in an article, or even in few words, why all those. I think Mozilla should detailed explain.

Thanks in advance and Sorry for my English.

Can anyone tell me, at least, what these extensions do?

hi, those are the default search providers that firefox ships with and users can manage in about:preferences#search. these are packaged as extensions, but are not comparable to user-installed addons as they just contain meta-information about the particular search engine but nothing that executes any code. sample for the google one: https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/components/search/extensions/google/_locales/en/messages.json

so there's no use to letting ccleaner delete them as far as i can see...

Those extensions are builtin search engines that you can use to search internet as you probably are familiar with Google as a search engine.

You can see these extensions listed on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page as extensions that have an ID that ends with "@search.mozilla.org". You can hide them via "Options/Preferences -> Search", but you can't remove them permanently. They also show if you type an '@' in the location bar.

Thank you very much for your answers.

I not even ever use Google search because I don't trust and I don't want to support it in any way. For example, the same for Bing and also the rest I mention in my question. For the record, I use duckduckgo. I think Firefox should given support IF the user asks for it (to use Google search for example) and not by default. I think too, should provided data-leak free search providers.

As I have set those as disabled I don't see the reason to enforced and silently enable in every new Firefox update. So my questions remains.

Firefox comes with a rather large amount of search engine as each region has their own default search engines as listed in the list.json file.

You can inspect the built-in default search engines in Firefox 68 and newer by pasting this URI in the location bar.

  • resource://search-extensions/
  • resource://search-extensions/list.json

Wow! why Someone would needs, for example, Amazon in all this languages the same time? I don't understand even why Amazon or Bing is built in in Firefox! Why all those shit are enforcedly supported by default?

I can't see anywhere the duckduckgo. As you said, we can inspect. But we cannot control!

Really thank you for your answer

Edit: Firefox now has "fixed" this enforce and now is worst! With in the last Firefox updates (80-81.0) this enforced extensions comes back instantly by default in every Firefox damn STARTUP now! So no one can disable (thru CCleaner) any more the Amazon, Google, Bing, even if would never use those shit! Just because!

It has unfortunately reached the point where is forcing promote such pages (such as Google) which impose increasingly hated tactics, which, in the end, seem to be fully adopted by Firefox. As it turns out, unfortunately, Firefox can no longer protect us from information leakage but just gives us the illusion that it can. Actually, Firefox would can but do not want it.

The DuckDuckGo search engine is present as 'ddg'.

  • resource://search-extensions/ddg/manifest.json

You may have problem with search.json.mozlz4 if you lose changes.

You can rename/remove search.json.mozlz4 (and possible search.json, search-metadata.json, search.sqlite) in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed to rebuild the search engines registry.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Firefox will rebuild search.json.mozlz4 from the builtin search engines.

Thanks for asking about this @AntonyMan! Either Ccleaner or FF or both had a recent update that kept those default extensions like Amazon, Bing, eBay, Google disabled if you chose to want that...but the newest FF updates like 82.0 have overridden that. I would like to know how to safely change or edit those specific' hidden' default extensions preferences from true to false without causing any related problems...but there is a danger in doing that. Any 'safe' alternatives or suggestions are welcome

The bing redirect from google search engine is malware. I have tried every step necessary-including returning to default. Still, microsoft bing redirects from google. If you look at Settings, Search, Search Shortcuts and see Cyber Search, this is an issue I had with Safari. I've deleted it, closed Firefox, re-opened and it still remains. Does anyone know how to get rid of extensions in Firefox? Help!

Scan with ADWcleaner (a Malwarebytes product), then Malwarebytes itself.
