Strange thing happend today. I opened firefox and found myself with my preset fonts resetted. Never ever have I encountered this in around 20 years of using the browser.

Even worse than the unsollicited reset, I went to Settings > Fonts and Colors to get the fonts back to my preference and I was confronted with my fonts no longer showing up in the list. Yet they are there in my Windows 10 list.. as well as all other browsers I tried to find out what on earth has happened.

I vaguely remember that one or two days ago firefox had updated. Not sure what was updated or whether it doesn't even have to anything to do with that but some obscure settings I accidentally turned on or of I have no idea. I cant find similar problem posted by someoen online either.

Does your Firefox identify itself as version 78 because you use privacy.resistFingerprinting? When I test with that enabled, the number of font choices definitely is reduced compared to the enormous range when I have it disabled. Comparison screenshot attached.

Investigating further, I discovered that Firefox has changed its font list display recently.

Right now the browser seem to display only selected fonts that have been explicitly associated with some sort of language label or subcatagory. In other words If you pick "Latin" as your "Fonts for" in Firefox, then the drop down list of fonts to pick from surreptitiously adjusts itself and weeds out certain fonts from being available to pick. The problem with this filtering is that not all fonts are explicitly labeled "latin" by the font or by Microsoft. Microsoft windows or whoever. Microsft's font display shows by default a font list of "All languages" that displays all of them but firefox doesn't have "All languages" option in its filter list ("Options" > "Fonts and Colors" > Advanced > "Fonts For").

Naturally I want this new habit of Firefox automatically pre-filtering the list of available fonts to be totally disabled. It doesn't remotely display all available fonts that I have long ago installed. Only Microsoft supplied pre-installed fonts seem to come equipped with filter labels like "latin". Others, even if they are Latin only fonts don't seem to have a "latin" label... and therefore no longer show up in Firefox's forced filtered list... even while it shows up in Google Chrome and Opera and Edge.

Have you experienced the same issue in Firefox v79?

No I have never ever experienced this ever, not in Firefox 79, and nor in all previous versions I have used since I ever got on the internet. If the filter was there in 79 or not I can't be sure but it didn't exist a long time at most two or so weeks. That's why I noticed it today — only because the system has automatically reverted back to defaults Roman, Arial and Courrier. Akin to what happens when you uninstall from the computer the fonts that have been set to display in Firefox.

This is totally new and totally unheard of. I just checked "what is new" and in August 25 (last update) and it makes no mention of the fact that font view has changed.

I wasn't explicitly on the lookout for the fonts so it is very much possible that this change occurred in the days (not weeks) before August 25.

Oddly firefox's "Fonts for" list has a vague undefined "other writing systems" option but my installed fonts don't show up there either.

So that means a vast amount of my English letter only fonts don't show up ANYWHERE on Firefox's "Fonts for" filter. This is not acceptable.

So please get rid of this filter.

Looks like it is that!

Thanks for the heads up.
