I'm using Firefox 78.0.2 and i keep getting notices to upgrade. But the last time I upgraded, Firefox changed the locations of my tabs from below the address bar to above the address bar and also changed the behavior of the address bar. It took me a couple of weeks to find the answers and get things back the way they were. I don't want to upgrade Firefox because I have no idea what it might change this time. Is there a way to keep Firefox from sending me upgrade notices when I don't want them?

Hi mikejanus, on these points:

> (1) I want to have the tabs below the address bar and Firefox has moved them to above the address bar

I think the userChrome.css code to change the order of the toolbars is the same in Firefox 77-78 as in Firefox 76, so I'm not sure what happened there. https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html#movetabbar

Did your Firefox "Refresh" and remove your old setting to an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop? Or did Firefox tell you it needed to create a new profile at some point?

> (2) I want the address bar to highlight the entire current address when I move my cursor there

I'm surprised your address bar contents aren't selected automatically. That is the usual behavior on Windows. However, on some themes, the colors seem to get inverted so if you are having that problem and you can't change your theme, then you might need to use some userChrome.css trickery. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1290297#answer-1331823

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles {web link}
I use an add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case.
Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

How do you completely turn off update checks in Firefox v64?
You can use a policies.json file to disable updates for all users.
https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md
or
https://winaero.com/blog/disable-updates-firefox-63-above/

You can use a policies.json file in the distribution folder in the Firefox installation folder instead as also listed in the article, so no need to use GPO keys in the Windows Registry. • https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customizing-firefox-using-policiesjson

Have you disabled the automatic updates?
You will still get the notices but will not update until you specifically elect to do so.

Tools --> Options --> General -- Firefox Updates
in the Allow Firefox to panel - select the option Check for updates but let you choose when to install them.

Hi mikejanus, your browser reported to the forum that is version 77. Is it possible you have two installations of Firefox? Please investigate as follows, but don't delete anything yet:

Please check for these folders and see whether you have both:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -- traditional location for new 64-bit installs
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -- traditional location for new 32-bit installs, or 32-bit installs that were upgraded to 64-bit

Sometimes when there are two installs, you can end up running a different Firefox depending on what shortcut you use, or whether you start Firefox from a link in another application. And each install might have a different default profile, which could explain how sometimes your regular data is missing.

Anything extra so far?

Thanks for your response. That was my fault. When I looked at Help|About Firefox, I copied the wrong information. It told me my current version was 77.0.1 and that I should update to 78.0.2. The 78.0.2 was highlighted so I copied that in error. Thanks for being on the ball about that.

My real problems are that (1) I want to have the tabs below the address bar and Firefox has moved them to above the address bar and (2) I want the address bar to highlight the entire current address when I move my cursor there and Firefox changed it so that no longer happens. I did find a solution to (2) involving a userChrome.css that I had to replace but my tabs still remain above the address bar--which I guess I'll have to learn to live with.

Anyhow, sorry to burden you with this.

It is not that difficult to create userChrome.css if you have never used it.

The first step is to open the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page and find the button to access the profile folder.

You can find this button under the "Application Basics" section as "Profile Folder -> Open Folder".
If you click this button then you open the profile folder in the Windows File Explorer.
You need to create a folder with the name chrome in this folder (name is all lowercase).
In the chrome folder you need to create a plain text file with the name userChrome.css (name is case sensitive). In this userChrome.css text file you paste the text posted.

In Windows saving the file is usually the only time things get more complicated because Windows can silently add a .txt file extension and you end up with a file named userChrome.css.txt.
To avoid this you need to make sure to select "All files" in the dialog to save the file in the text editor using "Save File as".

You need to close (Quit/Exit) and restart Firefox when you create or modify the userChrome.css file.

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

  • toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets = true

your concern is 100% legitimate, in fact, I am of the same opinion.

The solution in Linux is just 1 click away: stop updates as a matter of policy
