I have returned to Firefox after a long hiatus. I imported my bookmarks from Chrome and recreated the bookmarks toolbar. After clicking on each one, most of them populate with their favicon, but a few do not. Any idea why? The icons do appear on the tab. This is a brand new installation so I can't imagine that clearing the cache would help.

Fixed. I deleted and recreated the bookmarks and they work properly.

Update: it appears that bank sites do not populate the favicon, at least the two I use. I don't know if this is because I do not allow Firefox to store the password. But it would be nice if this could be fixed--it works in Chrome.

I wonder whether this is related to a redirect. Does the bookmarked address match the final address where you can see the site icon on the tab?

more options

Yes, that's right. When the address got updated, the favicon came with it. But this was not the case for those two bank sites. I literally cut and pasted the redirected address into the new bookmarks, but they didn't update. The other six or so worked fine.

I don't consider it "solved" as the issue with the bank bookmarks persists.

This is an important issue. There is more than aesthetics to a favicon. It is about recognition of a particular bookmark among long lists of bookmarks. I use favicons without text on the Bookmark Toolbar. The default icon is useless for recognition.

I have tried deleting bookmarks but the problem persists for a very few particular bookmarks which might seem to some to be on a blacklist. Firefox stubbornly refuses to store their favicons. This spoils the usability of Firefox since stored URLs are vital for usability.

Hi loungehake, please compare the address of the page you land on when using the bookmark with the address in the bookmark. Even a one character difference such as http: vs. https: will cause Firefox not to associate the final address icon with the bookmarked URL.

@jscher2000, did you read the thread? This has already been addressed.

He's saying if you copy and pasted the old addresses they might not be loading favicons if you have small differences that you copy and pasted, such as http vs https or missing www. Cor-el posted this response in another thread about favicons not loading, which might help ( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1163750#answer-976724 ) :

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Yes, but someone new joined and may not have tested that themselves, so I repeated the typical issue in a message directed to them.

Can you share examples of URLs you bookmarked that never get the favicon saved? If they are inside a logged in area, then I wouldn't be able to test those.

Try https://client.schwab.com/ . The URL will fill in with a very complicated path, probably user specific. You can copy and paste this path into the bookmark all you want, but the favicon won't appear. This also happens with chaseonline.chase.com. I agree with the previous commenter that the favicons are useful when you don't have titles in the bookmarks bar. But since they are the only two that fail, I am working with it.

Schwab

So I'm not logged in to Schwab and I get redirected to a login page. To create a clean bookmark for the Schwab login page, I delete the part from the ? to the end, and press Enter to load the clean URL. Then I bookmark that:

https://client.schwab.com/Login/SignOn/CustomerCenterLogin.aspx

And/or, once I'm logged in, I can bookmark a specific page without parameters. Mine seems to default to the account summary page:

https://client.schwab.com/clientapps/accounts/summary/

Any stable URL inside the client area should be bookmarkable.

Chase

Chase is hard because they use several different subdomains after you log in, like:

  • secure03b.chase.com
  • secure05c.chase.com
  • secure07a.chase.com

So I don't know whether it is "safe" to bookmark a URL on one secure server when my next session might need to use a different one.

Chase has some public URLs like https://www.chase.com/ that are stable, but bookmarking one of those requires an extra step to navigate where you intended to go after login.

I tried to do that with the Schwab address, but no favicon appears.

Hmm, maybe it's not retroactive when the URL changes? I was testing by creating new bookmarks (Ctrl+D) and those got the icon.

I tried that too, both by editing the current bookmark and creating a new one, but still no favicon. Thanks for your thoughts on this though, I do appreciate it even if we haven't nailed it yet.

You can check for problems with the favicons.sqlite database in the Firefox profile folder and try to rename this file to faviconsSAV.sqlite as a test to to see if that has effect. Note that this will remove all favicons and you will have to visit each bookmark to make Firefox retrieve the favicon.
