Where are my bookmarks from the old one? I set up an account and everything, but when I went back and updated they don't show up when I sign in

I just absolutely HATE this latest version. Even though I hate, hate, hate signing in to use any browser, I made an account with the old version that had all of my doggone book marks. Finally it updated without my even saying yes, and even when I sign in they are gone. I do NOT want to have to work so hard to have my bookmarks on a PC. NOT cool, especially when I'm going to be replacing this dinosaur this year and wanted to have my bookmarks available with the new one. TOO MUCH WORK to sync when I prefer incognito. BOO!

Hi k_kydland,

It appears from your question, that you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service.

If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of this article.

If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.

Thanks. NOW they are showing up, but the bookmarks bar has vanished. I also managed to get rid of all the new features I personally find annoying that no doubt others like.

BUT, I was hoping that by having a log in account, I'd be able to get my bookmarks when we replace this. If not, I'll have to save the most important ones in an email draft or something.

i k_kydland, Did you right-click on your toolbar and select Bookmarks Toolbar?

Firefox backs-up your bookmarks everyday - automatically. 15 days is the default setting. Press Ctrl+Shift+B to open the Bookmarks Library window. Click on Import and Export and hover your cursor over Restore. These are saved in your profile and, of course, you can export them to be restored later. See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Firefox really screwed up this time. I am tired of constantly resetting my preferences every time Firefox does an update, but I am livid now! Ihave lost all the bookmarks I have put together. I am ready to stop using Firefox as my browser! Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

If you lost personal data then it is possible that a new default-release profile folder has been created. See "Determine if Firefox has created a new profile":

You can open the about:profiles page via the location bar to check whether multiple profiles are present and what profile Firefox currently is using.

Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).
