I moved to an new area and had to change providers. I don't want to lose all my old e-mails and contacts. How can I insure that they will not be wiped out?
I've read questions from others that their old messages were wiped out when they changed servers. How can I avoid this and how to save my contact and messages. I want to get in front of this, not be searching later only to find that they are gone.

Don't change server settings. Add a new account for use with your new provider.
Was the old account set for POP or for IMAP?
If POP you don't have a problem. You already have your own copies of all the messages. The main irritation with leaving a POP-connected account in place in Thunderbird is that it may try, and fail, to connect to its server.
If it's IMAP you really need to make copies so you are not dependent on a server. Before you lose connection to the old server, you should make copies under Local Folders in Thunderbird.
If it used IMAP and you have already lost access to the old server, then you may be able to rescue some or all of the message data by copying files. Please indicate if this is your situation and then someone can come up with detailed help.
