Firefox has been hanging with excesive RAM usage(1-2.5GB+)... requiring a restart...
For the past two to three versions of FF this hanging issue has ONLY gotten worse.... ;_; x( my only fix has been temporary, and that has been to File(MENU)-->"Restart" Firefox....
I have open at all times a minimum of 3 tabs.. - Main EMAIL account - GMAIL account - Facebook (THIS ONE IS THE REAL RAM HOG... see my attached FF bug report) https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1338930
I did check out... https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_firefox-hangs-at-random-times but I have NEVER had any issues till these past two or three versions of FF.... x( in that case of using the method of starting with a fresh... places.sqlite file .. idk... I really don't want to lose everything I have collected over time...
- places.sqlite (50.0 MB (52,428,800 bytes)) lol yeah I have A LOT OF BOOKMARKS....
and as a side note I use CCleaner to clean and compact the FF databases.. to which as far as I know there is NO ISSUE.. ;)
so What is going on with Firefox these days... x(

Do you use Malwarebytes software?

Do you use Malwarebytes software?
lol, No I don't use any kind of Anti-virus or active anti-malware... they are resource hogs and can bug down the system...
I use hardware and software FIREWALLS........ for protection.. I do occasional scan semi-questionable downloads with Spybot S&D but that's about it.. other wise all downloads I do are from home sites and are safe...
here is my bug-report on this subject: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1338930
I am pretty sure is a Firefox programming degradation issue.. be cause it has been present for the past 4-15 releases of Firefox..
and my use of GreaseMonkey is limited to my main email account/site... so just one small and simple script..
I have open at all times: - main email account - Gmail - Facebook - and YouTube vid(s)
Well it is possible to slip by your hardware/software firewalls. So unless you do perform some scans using the following to make sure you are clean it may not be possible to start helping you further unless you please do so.

Could you please also update your Firefox to version 54. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version

GOOD GRIEF.. I'm a advanced POWER USER.. I check for updates to software I use DAILY! so I keep the release dates bookmarked.. https://wiki.mozilla.org/RapidRelease/Calendar
so I was running FF v54.0.0 the SECOND it came off the build server DUH!
I to occasionally do a check with Spybot S&D...
MY SYSTEM IS AS CLEAN AS A NEW BORN BABY'S A**
- ROLLS-EYES: lol
I just don't waste my system resources on a anti-virus systems that scan everything, every second of every day.. :ROLLS-EYES:
I do take my systems security very seriously!
and I keep Windows Task-manager loaded at all times, making regular
scans of the list for anything out of the ordinary..
I also use Process Explorer by system Internals (Microsoft)
which can do https://www.virustotal.com/en/ tests of any file on the system...

Someone will come along and help you with your rolling eye problem. I will let them explain the fix for that.
@Melchior (aka Joseph)
Pkshadow is only trying to help you (as a volunteer contributor,
in his spare time) ........
...........
It says v53.0.3 in the auto-populated data from my browser, because that is what it was WHEN I FIRST STARTED THIS THREAD... good grief... as it should be obvious I cannot change that data and update it reflect changes since I started this thread/question.. other then to make a statement in the comments...
These days Firefox takes up a very lot of ram, just on startup I am seeing 500-750+MB minimum....
and over the course of a few hours + the ram continues to eaten up more and more till its starts to hang pretty bad... forcing me to restart FF... x(

Pkshadow asked you to update in a real nice tone of voice - a simple "I've already done so" sounds so much better than a tirade ........
Let's all be nice to one another - a little kindness goes a long way.
But I totally understand where your anger is coming from : you're stuck with this annoying problem; and you're frustrated,
Who wouldn't be ........
If you have Multi-process (e10s) enabled, let's see if turning that feature off might help.
You could turn it off as follows :
Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked)
Type and search for the preferences :
browser.tabs.remote.autostart and set it's value to false (default) browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 and set it's value to false
Note: the exact name of the preference may vary, but it will start with browser.tabs.remote.autostart
Any improvement ?
loi.. ehh yeah....
"Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter)" LOL sry.. as an advanced power user.. I have most if not all of the Firefox "About: *" pages bookmarked in there own folder for convenience and quick access :D lol...
never heard of those two specific entries... ooh yeah and btw.. I don't use e10.. most if not all of FF XUL Extensions I use do not support it and can't be updated for it.. ooh well no sweat off my back... "Multiprocess Windows 0/2 (Disabled by add-ons)"
ehh I think that is the saying... lol.. yeah.. this is what I found: browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = TRUE browser.tabs.remote.autostart = FALSE
ok the addon compatibility reporter I just installed says only two of my addons are not e10 compatible .. so strike -> "most if not all of FF XUL Extensions I use do not support it and can't be updated for it.. ooh well no sweat off my back..."
- Mozilla Archive Format (v4.1.1rc)
- UnMHT (v8.3.1b2)
those are two of the older extensions I use... and...
they are for viewing Microsoft HTML Archive files (.MHT/.MHTML)
and the .MAF files which is like the MS archive except
1) its on storage format, including a overall zip compression :D
hmm....

At the risk of you giving me a bunch of LOL's (oh well, a good laugh never hurt anyone), I am now giving you two add-ons and an article to read :

(Edit : typo)

well thx.. addon memory is only (60.38 MB) with Firefox itself using (54.46 MB) so the addons are using negligible amount of memory...
the tabs memory are as follows: - main email (6.3MB) - Gmail (111MB) - Facebook (varies a bit from 56.3MB to 145MB+ so far...) - YouTube (50MB to 60MB+, varies) - etc
Did 'ghacks' (one of my favorite websites) make you any the wiser ?

How about changing your username to 'Laughalot (LOL)' ?
But seriously : I haven't a clue as to what else I can tell you that might solve your problem (sorry .....)
I can only hope that somebody else will 'come to your rescue' .......
lol k
its a shorthand of: k = ok lol ;p
