I've been assuming this is a script problem. It happens on both my laptop and desktop, often on gmail while clicking the down arrow to scroll through an open email dialog box, but not exclusively.

The first thing I did was this from the FAQ A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste flash and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to switch its value from false to true.

That originally helped. It turned FF from totally unuseable to something that at least functions. But it crashes almost every day. When it does, it is easiest to just ctrl-alt-delete it. Loading it again---it works fine suddenly. It's become a pain, though. There was another FAQ on extending the time to wait for scripts to complete, but that has not helped. There seems to be no point to safe mode. I would really rather not delete my profile and reload everything. Particularly, since I don't think that is the problem.

What were you and Firefox doind at the time? One one web site, several, many?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

often on gmail while clicking the down arrow to scroll through an open email dialog box, but not exclusively. In other words, it happens in various places. Gmail is the most frequent of late.

It is also a start-up problem. Clicking on a tab immediately after the browser loads often makes the screen go white and freeze. That is more likely to go away if I wait than things like the gmail issue. They might not be the same issue.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)

Safe Mode has little information to give because the problem is intermittent and not readily duplicated. Unless I use the browser constantly in Safe Mode, it is hard to tell. For instance, as noted, after scrolling with the down arrow button in gmail causes a problem, I force a close of the browser and restart it. I do the same thing and everything is fine.

While still in Safe Mode, Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers. In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not

I have no crash reports on my desktop since March, 2015, which would not encompass the present issues or the upgrade to Win 10. Apparently FF does not save reports when I force a close. My laptop is only a few months old, but it shows no crash reports at all. Perhaps I need to enable something. I will do that now for future reference.

Okay, try these out, please;

Do you have NVidia’s network access manager or Forceware Network Manager software installed? Disable / remove it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/connectivity-crashing-firefox-43-update

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Then restart Firefox. Are there any problems?

I've turned that off. I'll give that a try and see what happens over the next week or so. Thanks.

Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Version 20.0.0.267
https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
Note: Windows users should download the ‘’’active_x’’’ for “Internet Explorer,” and the ‘’’plugin’’’ for “Plugin-based browsers” (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict.

See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

I believe I have the latest drivers---AMD just updated on my desktop last week.

I'm not sure I understand this: "Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict."

Should I install Adobe flash...or not?

more options

Yes, I should fix that. Install the ‘’’plugin’’’ only. Not the ‘’’active_x’’’.

Everything seems to help a bit in terms of making freezing less frequent, but nothing actually solves the problem. Was on my portal (netvibes) today. Click down arrow on my keyboard.....the "busy" icon started whirling. I touched the screen. Turned all white. At that point, there is no choice but to ctrl-alt-del and restart. Worked fine on restart. Shrug

How often is the problem?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

more options

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

About twice a week.

--I saw the other post on malware and what not. I run AVG and Malware Bytes now. Since the problem happens sometimes on the laptop, sometimes on the desktop, I doubt I'm infected. I suspect it is more of a script or java problem. But I just can't seem to eradicate it.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

I have all my AV programs on auto scan, including AVG and Malware Bytes. I am not infected. I ran another scan just to be sure. No issues.

OTOH, it just happened again on the laptop and it came with an error message this time (after 44 upgrade) offering to let me debug a script. It's a longstanding script issue.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

You can check for issues caused by plugins and set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.

  • plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode
