My computer auto-installed the newest Firefox version 40.0.2 (and then subsequently 40.0.3) and the browser won't open at all. It previously worked and I received no error messages. I have tried every fix I can find on here, and I even manually deleted all my profiles, folders, program files, uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted my computer, and it still will not open. I click on Firefox button in my taskbar, the load symbol goes for a few seconds, then nothing. Firefox opens and performs with no issues on other computer accounts on the computer. I even copied those Firefox files from the other computer account it works on and replaced all folders on the computer account Firefox does not work on, restarted, and still nothing. I have been dealing with this issue for over 2 weeks now and am very frustrated since I have spent hours trying everything I can find.

That fix didn't work either...tried it previously and tried it again. I did however FINALLY get my Firefox to work again on my own. I ended up finding a free online virus scanner (ESET online scanner) and did a full scan on my computer to remove anything that might be causing a problem. I also went through all my computer programs and documents and cookies and temporary internet files and deleted everything that is not necessary or if no longer used. I figured it had to be something else since Firefox has no problem with other computer users, and my original profile worked just fine under other computer users when transferred manually. I believe something else was interfering with Firefox, which is why none of the fixes on here worked since they targeted Firefox itself when it seems that wasn't the problem.

Thank you all for your input!

You might be able to make a back up of your profile first then follow these instructions for a clean install: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

If the above does not help, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate it. I backed-up my profiles on a thumb drive. I did a clean reinstall, deleting both the Firefox program (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox) and my profile and settings (%APPDATA%/Mozilla) (then restarted) and then reinstalled with the latest Firefox browser (then restarted) and Firefox still will not open.

I also have not been able to open Firefox in Safe Mode.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Firefox finally opens when I start my computer in safe mode...so what does this mean? How do I figure out what is the real problem, and how do I fix it so Firefox will start when my computer starts normally not in safe mode? I have not installed any new problems recently, I uninstalled all unnecessary/unused programs, and I have run full virus scans on my computer to no avail to remedy my Firefox problem. What have I missed?

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I do not have a problem connecting to the internet, the Firefox browser itself will not open. It is also not a firewall issue since Firefox works just fine on all other computer user accounts.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

cor-el, I have already tried this too, which is mentioned in earlier posts. First of all, I cannot open the profile manager to create a new profile with Firefox. Secondly, Firefox will not open even if I manually place the profile from a working version of Firefox from another computer user account into the %APPDATA%/Mozilla/Firefox file location, nor will it open if I delete the profiles all together and do a complete clean re-install of Firefox.

What happens if you try to open the Profile Manager?

You can only open the Profile Manager when Firefox isn't running and all Firefox windows are closed and no Firefox processes show in the Windows Task Manager.

Nothing happens, nothing Firefox-related will open. I know all Firefox applications must be closed, they are closed in all user accounts and Profile Manager will not open. I even made sure everything was closed by shutting down my computer and the first thing I try to do when turning it on is open the Profile Manager. I'm sorry, but I have previously tried all suggestions in the forums that you keep sending my way, and nothing is helping, which I have already said in my previous posts. That is why I posted a question, because nothing in the forums or FAQs has helped me.

FredMcD, Firefox with my profile opens when my computer is in Safe Mode, can you please help me figure out what that means and how to find the problem? I am currently running anti-Malware programs and removing all non-essential programs that start with start-up, and still nothing yet.

Also, my profile works fine when I copy and paste it into the Firefox profiles folder on another computer user account, so my profile is not the problem.

Okay, lets start from scratch. I want you to create a new profile and use it. BUT, do not change any setting, no add-ons. Just the way Firefox creates it. There will be no history, bookmarks, passwords . . . . . .

This just a test run. Are there any problems?

I can't actually create a new profile from scratch since I can't get Firefox to open, not even the profile manager. All I can do is manually delete all previous settings, profiles, extensions, add-ons, etc. from %APPDATA%/Mozilla so that Firefox can create a new cleanprofile, the browser still won't open. However, I did do exactly this (create a new profile from scratch) under another computer user on my computer, and then I transferred that new profile into the profile location for the computer user that Firefox won't open with, and still nothing. I just am not understanding how Firefox AND my original profile work just fine for a new computer user account, but not for my normal computer user account (except when my computer is in Safe Mode), and how a completely clean reinstall doesn't resolve the issue. It has got to be something outside of Firefox, right?

Close Firefox.

Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Note: You may have to enable Show Hidden Folders / Files. Enter this in the address bar;

Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\ C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows Linux: ~/.mozilla/ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Linux Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/ http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Mac

Rename the profiles.ini file by adding .old to it. Now restart Firefox.
