Firefox 33.1 Every time I relaunch Firefox, I get multiple scripts errors. Clicking the buttons does nothing. I always have to force quit Firefox at least once for things to settle down. At someone's suggestion, I installed No Script, but that created other issues I don't want to deal with, so I removed the Add-On. Could the problem have anything to do with numerous tabs in two different windows? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Do the alerts mention a specific file (i.e. an internal chrome:// link)? If that is the case then it should give a clue about the extension that causes it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi.

I believe most of the alerts mentioned chrome, but I'm not sure. What I'm going to do, when I have a bit more time to troubleshoot, is relaunch Firefox and get screenshots of the alerts, so I can (I hope!) follow your suggestions. Stay tuned....

And thank you.

I have a related problem.

I am finding I do get the error if I use a Restart add-on to Restart from within Firefox, or use Restart on the add-ons page following changing an add-on.

If I do File Exit, and re-launch Firefox using the OS shortcut, I don't get the script error. This is repeatable and works like this every time.

I am able to highlight and copy the text in the script error box with control-C like any other normal text in the browser.

My script error mentioned a recognizable add-on, so I disable that. Then it mentioned a different add-on, so I disabled that. Still got a script error but this time in place of a recognizable add-on name it was some random characters, hard to tell what add-on it would be, so I wasn't able to disable just that one add-on.

Following removing the Restartless Restart add-on, I could relaunch Firefox from the OS and not get a script error.

I then tried making some changes to add-ons to produce the add-ons page's Restart option, and using that, I get the script error again.

My script error at startup seems to be related to using an internal Firefox restart rather than a true Exit and relaunching from the OS.

Your's of course might be totally different. I really replied to say the error message can be highlighted and copied to paste here or to do web searches on. If doing web searches on the text note that it has punctuation that might affect the results undesirably.

Chuck, my script error occurs whenever I relaunch Firefox, which I do occasionally when I must shut it down to install an app (not necessarily an add-on). I don't restart it when I add an add-on.

I don't have a Firefox File>Exit command.

I really don't have time to copy the error message and do Google searches. For the times I get those messages, I just Force Quit Firefox and restart it.

I do appreciate your taking the time to explain how you solved the problem for yourself. Thanks.

Fred, forgive me, but how did you get all those tabs of mine? I thought my Firefox > Preferences > General > Home Page preference was private. Some of the tabs I haven't used in a long time, and one of them is the login page to my Schwab account, which I had no idea was visible to anyone but me, and I must say I'm disturbed that my preferences are "out there" for others to view. And would any of them cause my relaunch error messages?

I don't want to disable my add-ons, which I added on because I find them useful. Why does Firefox allow them if they cause problems?

Thank you.

Look at the top right of any post. Under System Details, press the More System Details. This will let us look at your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Sometimes, you get some add-ons that don't work together. This is rare. Other times, the add-on needs to be updated, or its settings changed. Once the problem is found, then a solution can be had.

You must think I'm a real dummy, Fred, but I don't see where System Details is "at the top right of any post." :-/

I'll review my add-ons, but I really close Firefox only when I need to reboot the computer or when installation of an update to an app requires it, so it's really no biggie.

BTW, I'm back to just one window, with currently 16 tabs.

Sorry, my bad. It's part of the Question details menu, and you need to open it to see the rest.

Thanks, Fred, but—arggh!—I can't find the Question Details page.

try this:

Click the menu button New Fx Menu , click help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.... Firefox will start up with the Firefox Safe Mode dialog.

Note: You can also start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting Firefox. You now have two options:

Clicking the Start in Safe Mode button will temporarily disable your extensions and themes, turn off hardware acceleration and reset toolbar and button customizations. When you leave Safe Mode and start Firefox up normally, your extensions, themes, and settings will return to the state they were in before you entered Safe Mode.
Clicking the Reset Firefox button will restore Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. See Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems for more information about this option.

See if fixed or not?

Thank you, bablushaw23, but I don't see a New Fx Menu button.

I will consider starting Firefox in safe mode, using your instructions, but I won't restore Firefox to its factory default state because I don't know which "essential information" it would retain.

As I said, the situation doesn't arise often, and I will probably just do a Force Quit, which seems to have solved the problem in the past.

I do appreciate your help.

i'm sorry to butt in on this conversation (when i have my own problems ) but resetting firefox is harmless. it saves any open tabs, windows, bookmarks, history.

the only thing you lose are add ons, downloads, themes, toolbars (aol, yahoo- which are useless now)

i don't know which add ons you have but, you should write down the things that won't get saved.

What does the reset feature do?

All of your Firefox settings and personal information are stored in a profile folder. The reset feature works by creating a new profile folder for you while saving your important data.

Firefox will save these things:

   Bookmarks
   Browsing history
   Passwords
Open windows, tabs and tab groups
   Cookies
   Web form auto-fill information
   Personal dictionary

These items and settings will be removed:

Extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.

i think all firefoxs are the same to find restart with all add ons disable

- click on the 3 lines at the top of the page to the right.

- click the ? mark at the bottom next to customize.

- click restart with add ons disabled.

when you're done, just close out.

i'm sorry you can ignore this if you want, i was just browsing through everyones questions. :)

Thanks very much, useroffirefox2014. I certainly don't want to ignore your helpful information, but I do not want to lose my add-ons and downloads and extensions and all the other things you say will be removed. I just don't care nor have time to deal with figuring out what I have now and then trying to reinstall them. For now, I'm just going to Force Quit and restart Firefox if/when it gives me the script error messages. That has worked so far.

trust me buddy i feel you on not wanting to reset. i reset Monday & the only add ons i have now are x kit & tumblr savior. i do miss the yahoo toolbar tho.

i unpinned everything on my taskbar. got rid of the gadgets on my desktop (background, clocks, weather).

i didn't know the system details were visible to everyone. i guess it helps trying to figure out what wrong.

make sure your time & date in the corner are set correctly. plug ins are up to date. the problem could be one of the open tabs or it could be an add on.

If you're having problems with Firefox, resetting it can help. The reset feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

It could be a problem with that add-on. If you go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for another add-on.

Please Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

If you see the error message again, please write down what it says and post it.
