Firefox 22 Research

  1. We're trying something a little different. Instead of doing research as part of the tech writing program, we're creating a group around it (like we outlined in the KB plan). I collected the documentation on research in this article - Research upcoming changes to Firefox. John99 has already agreed to help - more are welcome.

Here are the few things I know about so far (I haven't read these bugs yet): <strike>*Bug 844604 - Text is too small on hidpi displays

    • Bug 548763 - Show download progress in app icon in Mac OS X Dock
    • Bug 818340 - Block cookies from sites I haven't visited
    • Bug 851010 - Remove Google as a content handler for feeds, because Reader and iGoogle are being discontinued
    • Bug 790882 - [New Tab Page] Speculatively open connections for sites when hovering them
    • Bug 755126 - management UI via about:addons</strike>

    See below

  2. I spent a little longer looking around and reading bugs. I don't see anything user-facing for Android 22. I will see if I can confirm that.

For Desktop, here's what I've found:

    • Bug 844604 - Text is too small on hidpi displays - normally doesn't sound like something we would document but this fix could cause problems for people who have already fixed things by using an add-on or changing the default zoom level. It may need a troubleshooting article if we see a specific problem after the release.

<strike>*Bug 818340 - Block cookies from sites I haven't visited - I've been using builds with this pref and have not noticed a single difference in the websites work. But that doesn't mean there won't be broken things. So this probably affects any article that shows custom history settings. It may need it's own troubleshooting article if we see a specific problem after the release.</strike>

    • Bug 790882 - New Tab Page Speculatively open connections for sites when hovering them - I think this just needs an entry in How to stop Firefox from making automatic connections
    • Social API / Facebook Messenger for Firefox changes:
      • Bug 853642 - provider menu organization/cleanup - There is now a "Manage Services" option in menus. This takes you to a new section of the Add-ons manager. This allows you to have more than one social service installed.
      • Bug 755126 - management UI via about:addons - this is the bug for that new section of the Add-ons manager.

<strike>*Bug 855370 - Remove the ability to not "Always show the tab bar" - Basically the removal of a checkbox in the Tab preferences and settings</strike>

    • Bug 548763 - Show download progress in app icon in Mac OS X Dock - we already have this feature on Windows where it isn't documented. We don't need to document this for Mac either.
    • Bug 840745 - default html5 audio/video player controls should facilitate changing playback rate - this adds some options to the context menu of an HTML5 video. Seems like the lowest priority kind of change to me.

  3. Can someone start looking into what articles are affected?

  4. <strike>Social API / Facebook Messenger for Firefox changes - With Firefox 22 Firefox 21 (d'oh!) we now have the ability to have more than one social provider. We'll be adding a "learn more" link to the installation dialog that will need to provide general information about the social api and how it works. Bug 870089</strike>

Update: The learn more link will actually be in the provider menu and that won't happen until Firefox 23. For Firefox 22 we'll document the things listed above.

  5. Update:

    • Android - there some changes to the new tab UI. I'm not sure how significant - will learn more next week.
    • Desktop - these two won't be in 22:
      • <strike>*Bug 818340 - Block cookies from sites I haven't visited</strike>
      • <strike>*Bug 855370 - Remove the ability to not "Always show the tab bar"</strike>

  6. Ok it looks like we just have 4 items (3 updates, 1 new article). I added these to the Fx 22 etherpad - https://etherpad.mozilla.org/sumo-fx22 and added a needs change note for each article.

Let me know if you think I've missed something.

Nope, I don't think you missed anything for Android, thanks for doing the Android stuff in my absence!

If somebody has time, it would be helpful to go through all the "revised Android tab interface bugs" in the following wiki page and see if we need any changes to the Android KB articles about tabs (if we do they should just be minor tweaks)
