[In KB] Using the Windows Media Player plugin with Firefox

  1. The test link in the Play Windows Media files in Firefox with the Windows Media plugin article, http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/testpages/wmp11.html may not be working. Can a Windows user with the WMP plugin for Firefox installed (np-mswmp.dll) test it?

    Related forum topic:
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/759542 I have installed Windows Media Player Plug-In for Firefox but the test video doesn't work, how can I solve this problem?

If the test link isn't working we should post a different link. The MozillaZine article has http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/testpages/wmp9.html which may also be bad. I've added an alternate link to the MozillaZine article, http://www.vdat.com/techsupport/windowstest.asp but it's not a great test. Anyone have a better WMP plugin test link, if plugindoc's WMP test pages aren't working?

  2. P.S. I've sent a PM to Vectorspace (via MozillaZine). Hopefully he will get the PM and review the wmp11.html and wmp9.html plugindoc test pages.

  3. Got a reply from Vectorspace. He wrote back,

I've had a look at the test pages, and it appears that the media file that they play is gone. Hendikins maintains the plugindoc site, I'll query it with him

So it seems we need new test links, at least until Hendikins (aka Michael Hendy) can sort it out.

If no one comes up with another test page I'll add http://www.vdat.com/techsupport/windowstest.asp as an alternate link (if no one objects).

  4. Got another reply from Vectorspace today:

Hendikins is aware that there are problems with Plugindoc, he just hasn't had the time to fix it yet.

I've edited the article to comment out the test pages for the time being.

  5. IMHO having links to test plugins (Flash, WMP, QuickTime, Real) is very important: wouldn't it be good to have such a page in the Knowledge Base (or elsewhere in the various Mozilla websites)?

I was thinking to open a bug to ask...

  6. It would be great to have plugin test pages that are hosted on Mozilla's website, instead of depending on plugindoc.mozdev.org or other external sites. I'd vote for the bug, if you file it.

If you are proposing a new "Testing plugins" KB article (similar to the http://kb.mozillazine.org/Testing_plugins KB article?) I think you should repost this as a new topic.

  7. I would like to see an article in the KB, so I think I will open a new thread in this section.

    Thank you, Alice :)

  8. I like the idea of test pages for plugins on the site. (or at least links to the relevant external sites)

As Windows media comes in DRM and none DRM types I wonder if it would be possible to include tests for both types.

Another thought is that from reading the mozzilazine KB article I note other plugins are also required in addition to np-mswmp.dll , maybe those could also be mentioned in the article.

Some rather a heretical suggestions for troubleshooting problems with WMP & Firefox

I mention this because some users are otherwise possibly going to spend a lot of time trying to fix a firefox problem that does not exist, because the problem is in fact with WMP itself or they are trying to play DRM protected files.

Some rather a heretical suggestions for troubleshooting problems with WMP & Firefox * test it using IE, or entering suitable URL direct into WMP, whilst firefox is not the default browser. *( most WMP users will presumably have IE available ) * include links to MS troubleshooting etc pages such as http://support.microsoft.com/ph/7763 & http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Windows-Media-Player-frequently-asked-questions (other pages could be more appropriate) I mention this because some users are otherwise possibly going to spend a lot of time trying to fix a firefox problem that does not exist, because the problem is in fact with WMP itself or they are trying to play DRM protected files.

  12. FWIW, I asked in [http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.quality/browse_frm/thread/e086bc729a227 mozilla.dev.quality], and Henrik Skupin mentioned the existence of: * http://hg.mozilla.org/qa/litmus-data/raw-file/tip/firefox/plugins/mediaplayer.html * http://hg.mozilla.org/qa/litmus-data/raw-file/tip/firefox/plugins/plugin-test.html
  13. Thanks Chris.

The Windows Media Player test (first link) works on both Mac OS X 10.6.6 with the Flip4Mac plugin and Windows7 with the WMP Firefox plugin installed. I think it should be added to the article. Would someone else want to do that?

P.S. The second link goes to a page with a number of embed tags for different plugins (Flash, Shockwave, Java, QuickTime, Adobe Reader) but with no content, so it isn't a very useful test page.

  14. I tried the Windows Media page and could only get it to work in 3.6.13 on OS 10.6.6. I couldn't get it to work in Fx 4 B8, B9 or the latest nightly.

The other page (using latest nightly) gives me a bunch of install plugin messages but comes to the conclusion that there are no suitable plugins.

  15. ^ Good catch. I only tried the Windows Media Player Test in Firefox 3.6.13. It doesn't work for me either in Firefox 4 Beta 8 on Mac OS 10.6.6.

Does it work on Windows in Firefox 4? (I don't have access to Firefox 4 on Windows right now.)

  16. Yes, it works on Windows 7 with Firefox 4.0 Beta 9 and 3.6.13.

  17. On a hunch, I started Firefox 4 Beta 8 in 32-bit mode on my iMac using the same instructions in the Use the Silverlight plugin to play audio and video article for Mac OS X 10.6. The Windows Media Player test page video started automatically but the video controls at the bottom were missing.

Similar issue with http://thirdplanetvideo.com/Flip4MacTestPage.html (This page links directly to wmv files, which open in the Flip4Mac plugin, if enabled). I could only get the Flip4Mac plugin to load in 32-bit mode ... except, since the video controls were missing, I had to start the playback by clicking where I thought the "Play" button should be!

I suppose we could show the test page twice, once with {for win} tags and a second time with {for fx3.5, mac} tags, for now.

  18. On Mac OS and Firefox 4 Beta 12, when I try the Windows Media Player test page at http://hg.mozilla.org/qa/litmus-data/raw-file/tip/firefox/plugins/mediaplayer.html I now see a yellow notification bar with the message,
"This page requires a plugin that can only run in 32-bit mode"
...with a "Restart in 32-bit mode" button.

Bug 628651 - [OSX] show notification bar offering to restart in 32-bit mode when content tries to use a 32-bit plugin using carbon based NPAPI

When I click the Restart in 32-bit mode" button and Firefox restarts, my Flip4Mac plugin (v2.3.6.5) displays the embedded content ...and the contols are now visible.

I checked the download link at http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.htm and the latest available version is 2.3.8.1 but even if the latest plugin still requires 32-bit mode I think we can add that WMP test link to the article and show it for everyone, Fx4 on Mac included, since the notification bar is self-explanatory.

  19. I made a revision to add a "Testing the plugin" section with the Windows Media test page, with a note for mac, fx4 about the "restart in 32-bit mode" notification on Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard".

I also included # [[T:Open Add-ons|type=Plugins]] to the "Checking if the plugin is installed" section.

  20. On Windows, there are still some changes to do:

    • fix nested lists,
    • encapsulate the AO window in the fx35 tag,
    • remove references to Windows 98,
    • remove some parts of the Advanced Information section: too wordy, previously hidden sections, the ActiveX description...
