Firefox for Windows Touch - do we need a new product category?

  1. are there any plans on how Firefox for Windows Touch will be treated on SUMO - does it get its own product category, or will it be a subcategory of Firefox?
the questions in the forum about it seem to pick up a little and it would be nice if they can be labelled accordingly. also depending on how much documentation work needs to be done in the kb, a separation might come handy...

  2. Hi Philipp,

    Good question.
I am sure others can give a better answer.

I would have hoped it has been asked and answered elsewhere, maybe in a platform meeting or somewhere. it must have been considered already by Sumo ??
I think given that we have a search, tagging & topic system that does not function effectively I say reluctantly YES.

Otherwise I would have said this is an unnecessary confusion, duplication of effort, and would lead to fragmentation of a support effort; possibly with problems being solved or missed in one product only when in fact the issue is more general and just relates to Firefox Desktop or an addon.

I would have been against this if we had better procedures and facilities. If we

    • Effectively picked up the post from a Windows 8 Touch system.
      • I am not sure can we do this at present.
        No doubt you know ?
        Comments suggestions
      • Tagged it as such
    • Had some effective method of using a topic allocation that was specific to Windows 8 Touch PROBLEMS
(The topic system is not really of any use to anyone, or any sumo group, other than to offer a selection of KB items to OPs )
      • Obviously we may ask and get some sort of self selection of Windows Touch problem. How do we then make effective use of that information. At present I do not see we can other than actually reading individual posts !

  3. The biggest issue we are facing is that we can't tell apart a classic Firefox from a Metro Firefox. There are a number of ways to still support those user specifically though. Michael and I had talked about it before, and if I remember correctly it also came up in one of the platform meetings a while ago (though I can't find it in the logs).

There's already this KB article on Firefox Touch: How do I launch Firefox for Windows 8 Touch? . I found this post from Michael Verdi in that article's own discussion forum, dated Dec 19, 2013

Update: We have decided on "Firefox for Windows 8 Touch" and "Windows 8 style Firefox" for our in-product strings.

Yep, I spoke with Yuan about this. We'll also be creating a new sumo "product" for these articles although they will still be able to be accessed from the regular desktop Firefox section too.

  5. Ah, yeah, just got a reminder from Michael about this. What he said there holds, we are also creating an AAQ path for Metro. Here is the bug for that: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=966978

  6. more options

Also, just an FYI for how Firefox for touch is being treated is that it is a separate product, much like Firefox for Android is separate from Desktop. I know this doesn't make it easier to decide what to do or what's technically possible, but just an fyi.

Just to follow up here: *New product landing page - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/firefox-windows-8-touch *Bug to make sure touch users who choose Settings > Help land on that page https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=967907
  9. This is one of those things that we are going to need to monitor really closely. For now the assumption is that user can tell apart when they are using Firefox for Windows 8 Touch vs regular view...so it's considered a separate product. If we learn that users are not and they are constantly confusing it...we will need to back up and find another solution.

All the solutions seems to have a trade off one way or the other.
