Firefox 24 Release / Issues / Status

  1. more options

Happy September Everyone! As Fall begins to roll around, leading to changing leaves, cooler weather, school and all sorts of fun, we are preparing to bring Firefox 24 to welcome the world tomorrow! This release has some improvements but no radical changes, and we are looking forward to a smooth release. A few items of note for Desktop and Android:

    Desktop

    • Release notes are at This Link. (Note these are for Beta but release is much the same)
    • We've improved performance around the new tab page and in general area of Firefox usage, so all users should update to Firefox 24 to take advantage of these fixes.
    • There is a new scrollbar style in Firefox for Mac 10.7 and higher, to conform to Mac guidelines, so some users will be affected by this. Note that Firefox will now behave like other browsers on these systems.
    • Users can right click a tab and select to close all tabs to the right, which is an often requested improvement.
    • The error console is gone and has been replaced by the browser console, which offers lots or other useful information.
    • SVG image rendering is much improved.

    Android

    • Release notes are at This Link. (Note these are for Beta but release is much the same)
    • We have introduced WeRTC in this version of Firefox. This is mainly a developer feature but expect to see website starting to take advantage of this technology in the future.
    • NFC Tab sharing for phones with NFC support
    • New locales! Swedish, British and Catalan!
    • Lots of Misc fixes

    Thunderbird

Thunderbird 24 will be the next Thunderbird release, notes are live at here!

    ESR

Firefox 24 will also be the next ESR for Desktop, meaning that all Firefox 17 ESR users should being testing their deployments to Firefox ESR 24. Firefox 17 ESR will get 1-2 more updates before being End of Lifed.

As always please let us know, either by PM or in this thread of any major issues in a release.

Waka, Bug 903716 was fixed in Firefox 24 Beta 5 (so it never made it to release), as for the other issue I haven't seen anything, but it looks like an l10n issue, not a problem with rapid release.

Hey everyone! Just a quick update around Firefox 24. There is a crash that is caused by the Norton Toolbar that users who update to Firefox 24 may experience (it is more likely to crash if at anytime in the past users have used the Norton Vault to store their passwords, even if it is disabled now). This was reported at Bugzilla in Bug 917792, and Norton is aware of the issue and is working hard on fixing it (this is out of the hands of Firefox). We have created an article, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-24-crashes-with-norton-toolbar, and will keep a close eye on this.

Second, because of this crash we will be keeping Firefox throttled (meaning no updates will go out to users unless they manually check) until Monday. We will then unthrottle Firefox, meaning all users with automatic updates enabled will receive the update. So please be prepared for more Firefox 24 questions next week. Thank you all and see you at the Summit!

I'm thinking it was just an oversight so I edited the description to add it to "Hot Topics". I think it'll take a little while for it to show It now shows up in /products/firefox/hot.

Hey everyone, just a quick FYI that in Firefox 24 and later all versions of Java forever will be Click to Play blocked. This is because of a variety of constant security and stability issues that have been plaguing Java for years. Users can use the click to play dialog to enable Java on a per-site basis from now on. Why do I have to click to activate plugins?

How to allow Java on trusted sites is on the /products/firefox Hot Topics list and has been for some time. Only thing, the Always activate Java for a site section and screenshot for the drop-down needs updating. It now says "Allow Now" and "Allow and Remember".

Here's what I see in Firefox 24 on Windows 7 with the latest Java 7 U45:

That article's "How to always activate a plugin for a trusted website" section and screenshot also needs updating, since the options are now "Allow Now" and "Allow and Remember".

By the way, here's the related bug (links to the blocklist entries are in comment 20):
