Because we are trying to get them out ASAP, and Friday was the first day we could get the fixes out. We don't want our users to have to deal with known bugs for a whole weekend if we can fix them on Friday :)

Ok, so Firefox 18.0.1 has been released, http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/18.0.1/releasenotes/.

It is unthrottled, which means all users on 18 and below who allow firefox to automatically check for updates will update silently in the background.

We are still tracking some third-party issues (Norton, malware) bu this release will fix the biggest and most painful issues in 18.0

  9. I had a problem with FF v18 repeatedly crashing on closing. A clean reinstall did not cure it. Bearing in mind the frequent references to incompatibility with Norton 360, I checked the Norton toolbar (top LHS) to see what was enabled and one by one disabled them. Hey presto! Norton Safe Search was the culprit. After disabling, no more problems: even Identity Safe worked. I recommend you check your Norton functions first. (Windows 7 Prof.)

Thanks for that report. I already wrote that up here, http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes#Crash_when_closing_a_tab_or_exiting_Firefox ... which links to this Norton thread, among other references.

P.S. Symantec will issue an update soon for its 2012 and 2013 products - see this related discussion thread.

I spoke to Tyler earlier today. They said they might release a 18.0.2 but their not 100% sure.

  13. Guys, you are absolutely awesome. Gals too ;)

[EDIT] To explain my unsolicited comment: the thread reminded me - of all the things... - of Appollo 13 radio communcation, the moment they got struck.

They did not squeak: "D-D-Didja hear that!?" It was: "Houston, we got a problem".

They stayed in control. They fixed the problem. And got back to have a hell of a ball;)

Thanks Swarnava for the info. 18.0.2 should fix the Facebook issue (crashing I believe? ) as well as a variety of stuff.

Ok, just a quick post to fill everyone in on the status of the product:

    Firefox 18.0.2

On Feb 5th we released Firefox 18.0.2. This update included only one fix, and that was to fix the crash on Facebook that accounted for over 20% of our 18.0.1 crashes. While it's still too early to tell for sure, early results are very positive that this release fixed the Facebook issues. All users should update to this version as this was an issue with the new Javascript engine (Ionmonkey) in 18 and may affect other websites as well.

    Norton Crashes

Norton has pushed fixes for both 2013 and 2012 and these should be rolling out via live update to all users now. This will hopefully resolve the issue of users crashing when they close a tab in Firefox. Please note that users may have to restart their computer to fully apply the update, depending on the version of Norton they are updating from.

    Malware Crashes

These crashes are steadily going down due to anti-virus vendors picking up the offending .dll's signature. We do have suspicious the .dll is changing though, so be on the lookout for new .dll's that aren't being caught.

    Websense Crashes

Websense has crated a patch that should fix this issue. Websense users who are having difficulty updating can contact Websense support.

    Other Issues

There are no other major issues with the 18 version at this time (that we know of). We aren't planning on any more chemspills, and 19 is still the next planned release (in about two weeks). If anyone sees trending issues please let me or the rest of the User Advocacy team know and we'll track them down. Thanks for all the hard work! This has been a bumpy release, but hopefully everything major has been cleaned up and users can start enjoying all the good things Firefox 18 has to offer (improved speed and security fixes).

  20. I'm having issues in Firefox 18.0.2 with opening a link in a new tab.
The new tab only shows partially on the tab bar with the right half hidden and thus the full tab text and the close button are missing on that new last tab.
There are enough tabs open to show scroll buttons on the tab bar and hide the close buttons on the other tabs.
