I'm running the latest version of Firefox (29.0) on my Windows 8 laptop. When I go to websites containing multimedia content, the speakers on my laptop suddenly turn on and start playing content. As a default, I have my speakers turned off. What is causing this and what Firefox settings can I adjust to prevent this?

Hi,
Are you saying that you have the volume turned all the way down and sounds can still be heard when visiting sites in Firefox? If so, does this only happen in Firefox?
Thanks,
Michael

I have the speakers turned off. I clicked on the speaker icon on the task bar and then clicked on the speaker icon below the volume control. The speaker icon on the task bar is now the speaker-off icon.

Some websites seem to have scripts that cause my computer to turn the speakers on, which is followed by multimedia content on the website being played. Do websites now have this capability?
