Is it possible for Sync to combine the bookmarks of two computers?

I tried to set up Firefox Sync to connect my desktop with my netbook. Both machines are running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. I just reformatted the netbook, so its Firefox install has no settings and default bookmarks. The desktop has all of my desired settings and bookmarks.

I went through the setup process, swapped keys, and things seems to be working. It said it could take several minutes, and it did, which is fine.

But what Sync did was add the default bookmarks to my desktop, and did not change the netbooks bookmarks at all.

I had assumed that Sync would create a shared bookmark space, consisting of all bookmarks from both machines...but it sounds like one machine is supposed to be the sender, and the other recipient? Or is this not the desired behavior for the service?
