Firefox now asks me every few minutes for the "master password" even when I have already logged in with my it, or when I am not on a site requiring it. Help!

I've used Firefox for years and the "Master Password" feature for access to sites requiring log-in. Until recently, Firefox behaved as described in the online help: it would prompt me for my MP when I first went to a site requiring login with a user id and password during a given session with Firefox. Recently however, the MP prompt pops up much more frequently -- regardless of whether the site requires it and regardless of whether I have already logged in with my MP.

For example, I might be logged in securely to Amazon.com and Firefox will still prompt me -- repeatedly and often -- for my Master Password during a single online session. This behavior is new.
