In the HELP menu, Firefox 3.6.6 update shows as “downloading” for days. How can I cancel it?

In the HELP menu, Firefox 3.6.6 update shows as “downloading” & it has for days, even after shutting down my computer. How can I cancel it? No Firefox processes show up in TASK MANAGER.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

== I clicked the UPDATE link in the HELP menu, & said YES to the update

Problem resolved! After shutting down & restarting my computer several times over a couple of days, the unending “downloading” ceased on its own. After it stopped, I was able to successfully download the 3.6.6 update… with no problems.
