Firefox crashes very frequently even when doing nothing

I've had this problem for as long as I've had this machine. MacBook pro 10.9.5; 2.3 GHz, 16 GB. Have tested all things according to the Firefox "what to do" list. I don't use extensions, themes etc.

This crashing happens even when I'm not doing anything i.e. my machine can be sitting there idle, I come back into the room and see "the Firefox has crashed window". Sometimes it crashes when I'm using another browser. Sometimes it crashes while working in an Adobe application and Firefox is open but not being used.
