Why can't I see sites I've visited recently when I click on the arrow beside the favourites star?

In the past in Firefox and currently in IE, I could click on the small downward arrow in the navigation bar (beside the star) and see sites that I'd visited. This was much easier than hitting 'back' 6 times to go back to a site I'd typed in 2 hours earlier, for instance. I've been unable to get this function again (since my last update maybe?) and now I have to re-type in the name of the earlier website. One click instead would save time and focus. Thanks
