loaded 3.6.17 recently and now experiencing numerous crashes

at the prompted download message I downloaded Firefox 3.6.17 after having only one week earlier downloaded Firefox 3.6.16. Since then I am experiencing multiple crashes that did not happen with earlier versions of Firefox. Running a desktop Mac OS 10.4. Never had browser crash problems until now.
