Firefox has lost my bookmarks and no longer strores new ones, how can I fix this and get my bookmarks back?

Firefox has lost my bookmarks and no longer stores them, how can I fix the problem and get my bookmarks back. I use Mcafee virus software protection and it happened after an upgrade but even if I go into safe mode and stop my virus software my bookmarks do not work.
