I cannot change my security server settings without freezing thunderbird. What should I be looking for?

I have a Dell machine with Ubuntu 14.04 and thunderbird 45.3.0 and am trying to change the security server settings such that the connection security uses SSL/TLS and the authentication method uses instead of Kerberos/GSSAPI a normal password. Every time I do that thunderbird freezes and only recovers when I close the account settings window. What should I be looking for? The settings need to be changed otherwise I cannot access my mails... Thank you!
