How do I stop Firefox going directly to the wrong address when entering a web address?

more options

Since the new update to 48.0.2 I now have two issues:

1) As I type a web address in the address bar, a long list of possible sites or history drops down. Can I turn that off? It's very annoying.

2) as I am typing the address, Firefox sometimes takes me to any old website that starts with those letters, so I am constantly having to stop and start again. they may be from History or not, but if I were to, for example, start on this page's address I'd get to suppor.... and then find I've been directed to some other site starting with su - again, very, very annoying and it's only started since the last upgrade. I'm on Windows 10 desktop.

Hi James:

For #1, you can deselect history and bookmarks on the Options page. See: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/awesome-bar-search-firefox-bookmarks-history-tabs#w_changing-your-location-bar-settings

For #2, are you saying that what you are typing has been replaced with something different, or that Firefox has prematurely proceeded to a site before you finished entering the address?

If you don't want addresses to appear in the bar as you type, you can turn that off to possibly avoid this problem:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.autoFill preference to switch the value from true to false

Any improvement?

Thanks for the quick reply. I've done #1 and that's fine, thank you.

I'll have a look at #2 now. It doesn't always happen but sometimes I type in the first two letter or so and find the page changes to a Google search page, or another web address and that address appears in the address bar as I am typing. It's a bit random. I will see if fixing #1 has changed this, if not will follow your instructions for #2. Thank you again!
