My firefox page opens and there is a message saying firefox has been updated. It asks if I want to run the update or stay with the previous version. When I click the ok button nothing happens. also I cannot write in the site line or click off anything . My other browsers work okay, and I have no trouble with them. I have to shut my computer down in order to get away from the firefox browser. I run windows 7.

I've never heard of this before: "It asks if I want to run the update or stay with the previous version." I wonder what is generating that message?

Could you try starting Firefox in its Safe Mode?

First you need to close all Firefox windows and perhaps "kill" any dead Firefox processes. For that you can use the Windows 7 Task Manager:

Ctrl+Shift+Esc will launch the Task Manager

The Applications tab generally shows the visible programs that have windows, so Firefox probably isn't there but please check.

The Processes tab shows all running programs whether they have a window or not. If you sort by name, it might be easier to check for firefox.exe among the others. You can right-click > End Process on any you find.

To start Firefox in Safe Mode when it's not running, hold down the Shift key when double-clicking the shortcut/icon.

Any better luck?

Could you post a screen shot of that pop-up message you're getting? This article has tips on how to do that: How do I create a screenshot of my problem? You can the Windows Paint program (start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Paint) to save the screen in PNG or JPG format. Please delete or blur any sensitive information before posting.

One other thought: does it work any better if you start Firefox up to a blank page? You can do that from the Start menu by pasting the following into the search box and then pressing Enter:

firefox.exe "about:blank"

Virus protection is good, but many can't detect ad / mal-ware.
