Prior to upgrading Firefox to version 10.0.2 my browser was working fine but after upgrading to 10.0.2 ,i see that firefox is taking up more than 1.5 GB of my memory, using upto 50% of my CPU and crashing.

In a span of an hour it has crashed twice. Normally i have around15-20 tabs open with multimedia apps running but now i have only few tabs (around 10) with no multimedia apps running yet is crashing !

I just don't know what firefox is playing at. I am very disappointed with the versions firefox is providing and the frequent updates. One issue gets fixes and multiple issues are introduced. i haven't installed anything new after this update.

See Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) for solutions or for help getting a crash Report ID that you should post here.

Hi Adikya,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with Firefox.

I certainly do not notice such bad behaviour, and obviously there are efforts to make new releases fast and use minimal amounts of memory. I think your problem will turn out to be something other than a direct consequence of the upgrade to Firefox 10.0.2

Firefox did get a reputation for using a lot of memory, but a lot of that is down to what software extensions are used, and the problem was being neglected but teams of developers are making improvements now.

The rapid release cycle was introduced with good intent, but certainly caused problems, again this is being addressed, and there is hope we will start seeing the advantages rather than the disadvantages of this system soon.

Have you seen

I would suggest

  1. try firefox in safe-mode
  2. try in safe mode with all plugins disabled (you will not then be able to use multi media but if firefox is still crashing or using high memory you definitely have some problem)
  3. scan for malware with multiple tools (see for example /questions/914980#answer-302372 )
  4. if you get crashes then paste a couple of recent crash IDs into your next post, preferably from crashes whilst in safemode and no plugins enabled.

Please post back to say how you get on with trying those suggestions,
John

Hi,

Is there a way to find which plugin/add-on/extension consumes how much memory ? I would also like to know which particular tab consumes more memory ?

Currently, i have disabled all extension/add-ons and started the browser in safe mode, even then firefox's CPU usage fluctuates between 0-15 % which normally doesn't happen. Firefox uses CPU only when required not when nothing spectacular is happening.

Anyway, i have already checked "Submit Performance Data" in firefox; so the last two crash reports which i had sent should have sent the details i guess. Next time firefox crashes ,i will provide the details over here.

There is a plugin that shows I believe full memory detail on a per tab basis, but I am not sure if that only works on Firefox Nightly.

Firefox 10 does have a developers tool installed that also helps with such info: key into the location bar about:memory then look at the detail on mouse over, it certainly should allow you to work out where most of the memory is going, and whether it will clear properly. The reporter includes per compartment memory, that is probably the info you would be interested in.

If you read firefox crashes you will discover that Firefox will log crash information on your computer, and you may if necessary submit that manually. What is needed to follow up the crash information is recently submitted CrashID s . Crash ID s from use in safe mode and with plugins disabled may be best as any problem is then more likely to relate to Firefox itself, or maybe malware, rather than a problem with some software extension.

From your last message above it seems likely that firefox is behaving much better in safemode with plugins disabled, you could try re-enabling one at a time, or half of then then disabling and re-enabling the other half to try to identify which plugin or addon is causing the problem.

I used the about:memory tool of Firefox. Firefox is hogging upto MB of primary memory. Attached are the details of the same. Please go through it. I don't think any of my plugins/extensions/add-ons are using the memory !

If yes please point me so that i can disable it.

more options

Unfortunatly about:memory does not give any breakdown of memory used by specific plugins and extensions. The best it can do is report on the compartments, with the associated webpage address.

You will also note it has clickable buttons towards the bottom, those will attempt to reduce the current memory usage.

What you can do is try with any particular add-on or plugin enabled, and compare results with those you get when it is disabled. You may also find high memory usage occurs mainly on specific sites. If that happens then about:memory and the compartment information should help you to confirm what is happening.

I am using only those plugins and add-ons which were there prior to updating to 10.0.2 now. I have disabled the rest.

Even then the cpu usage is fluctuating between 10-20% constantly. This behavior is making my other applications unusable !

Is there a way to get the crash ID's of Firefox which were submitted a couple of days ago ?

I disabled the ant -video downloader add-on as it appears it is the culprit behind the crash by looking at the first line. But even then my CPU usage is between 5-15% and memory usage is 620 MB and is increasing constantly..

Can you explain why the add-on name appears ? Is it because it is the reason for the crash ? I normally use the xdebug add-on for debugging PHP applications.

The Crash IDs for submitted crashes are the vital information. For example from another and unrelated thread as an example

Your reports for CrashID s all have the same signature
related bug650664 - crash if I backup my bookmarks ....
Signature: TV_GetItemRect(_TREE*, _TREEITEM*, tagRECT*, unsigned int)
       5d52e578-0069-4610-8efc-104252120219

It is only the very recent CrashID s that are of interest, as Firefox's server will process fully only some of the thousands of daily reports. The crash ID provides access to the processed crash reports and any related bugs, or forum posts.

If you are interested in the technical side of memory use you may find some of the developer's blogs interesting e.g. http://blog.mozilla.com/nnethercote/category/aboutmemory/

Yeah, the Crash ID should be useful but i don't get the reason behind my browser crash !

Now, i am using Firefox in safe mode without any add-on,extension and yet Firefox is consuming 900 MB of RAM and reduced CPU usage.

I strongly feel that disabling all add-ons is not a convenient option for any user. Doing so one doesn't use Firefox's power to the fullest !

Kindly, keep me updated if there is any solution.

more options

I am not suggesting you keep all the add-ons permanently disabled. Only that you do that as a troubleshooting step before deciding on further action. For instance Firebug is a very powerful and useful add-on, some of us use that, but it is probably not wise to leave that enabled when it is not in use. Firebug is likely to slow down firefox &/or conflict with other software.
.

"Yeah, the Crash ID should be useful but i don't get the reason behind my browser crash ! "

If you post the CrashID s you may find what the reason is for the browser crash. Crash ID s that have been submited from Firefox crashes in safe mode with plugins disabled are the best ones, as they are not influenced as much by other software.

Are you able to paste a couple of such very recent CrashID s into your next post ?
(Go to about:crashes as explained in firefox crashes )

i had the same problem with firefox 8 (using Xp Sp3) and the newest Adobe Flash plugin (ver 11.1.102) it seems i might have cured it by going into the Windows Add/Remove (Control Panel) and removing just the Flash Player Active X plugin (not the "Flash Player 11 plugin"). I don't use MSIE so the active x plugin was of no use to me. once i removed it Firefox and Adobe flash seemed to work quite smoothly (firefox stopped crashing).

I have the same problem. I am developing some .net applications for web after few hours memory usage goes to 1.5 gb and crashes. It happens only with firefox because i have tested it with IE and chrome.

I am not sure where you may get advice about .net apps but maybe someone on the add-ons forum would point you in the right direction https://forums.mozilla.org/addons/

Many problems with memory leaks are down to third party software, rather than Firefox itself. One of the developer's blogs may be or interest to you see

Firefox has been crashing constantly since upgrading to 10.2; including freezing my entire box to the extent I had to reboot. I would get reports of high memory usage (always greater than 600MB), high CPU utilization and then the box would freeze. I followed the steps provided by tickin (e.g. removing just the Flash Player Active X plugin) and I no longer have a problem. Mozilla and Adobe REALLY needs to learn how to play in the sandbox together. UPDATE: I continue to have problems with 10.2. After I close the browser, I am unable to restart the application without rebooting my box. I see the process in task manager, but I can't kill the process and it will not load the browser. This then stops my computer from running any other applications.
