I download many pdf and Word files each day for marking. Opening pdf files in Adobe Reader works automatically OK, but Word files no. This archived question gives a link to an answer that does not work. "If Firefox does not have a set download action for a type of file, Firefox will save the file by default. If you select Always Open Similar Files in the Downloads panel right-click context menu for the file, (see below) a new Content Type and Action entry will be added to the General panel Applications section of Firefox settings." I went through the Always Open step, but no "Content Type and Action entry" was added.

Judging by the questions in Firefox and more widely, many people are having the same problem. Why cannot the industry standard file types be added to that list by default?

When I have to reinstall Firefox (it is needed frequently), I have to edit/delete a number of unwanted browser search tools. This principle could be used for the list of automatically opened file types as part of Firefox default settings.
