TB signs onto my mail server as [<IP address>]. Strictly speaking this is "illegal", especially if this is a reserved (non-public) address, since the EHLO/HELO is supposed to enable the machine to be identified. How can I get it to identify itself with an FQDN?

Reason: If I can do this, I can configure my server to drop connections from clients sending HELO/EHLO [<IP address>] which would strengthen my SPAM defence.

I'm writing a bootstrap Add-On for Thunderbird 24.3.0 on a Ubuntu 13.10 computer.

When trying to execute the following code snippet (taken for Mozilla Developer Network)

    var req = new XMLHttpRequest();
    req.open('GET', 'http://www.mozilla.org/', false);
    req.send(null);
    if(req.status == 200)
        dump(req.responseText);

I get "ReferenceError: XMLHttpRequest is not defined" on the Error Console when trying to create the object.

This problem looks very similar to Firefox's:

I'm new to Thunderbird. Using v 31.0

I have multiple email accounts hooked in, all with separate outgoing SMTP defined. They all work ... and then they don't.

What happens is that regardless of which email account I use to send a mail, the SMTP changes itself back to the Default, which will not work unless I'm on that default email account.

I go to the specific account Settings, and sure enough SMTP is set back to Default. I change it. I can send my email.

I go to send another and this process repeats itself.

It's incredibly problematic to have to manually specific the SMTP every single time I want to send an email.

Why is it forgetting its individual account settings?

How do I fix this?

How to Restore a Mozilla Thunderbird Profile from a Backup Copy

My system files have been corrupted and I can not do a restore from a restore point (System restore failed). No remedy has been found. I will either have to (1) do a factory reset/restore or (2) restore to a prior date from a system image. In either event I will have to restore my Thunderbird Profile which contains several calendar .ics files as well as events and tasks. The Profile, the ..default file and even the calendar ics files are backed up.

First, once my computer is all restored can't I just go to appdata/thunderbird and delete the old Profile and copy my back up back in?

Second, this is also confusing because, while in my Thunderbird Calendar, I regularly “export” my several different calendar .ics files to a back up directory. This implies I must use the “import” functions to put them back in. This is confusing as Import & Export seem to be terms of art that are not the same as “copy”. Is this a distinction with arty difference? Must I import each calendar .ics file back into TBird while it’s running or can I simply copy it all back in when I copy in the *.default folder?
