After I save a draft, and then return later to finish it.... I frequently (more times than not) find that Thunderbird has inserted a ton of  characters in the email, all over. Usually at the end of every sentence. Often the are 3 in a row, with spaces between:   Â

My Character Encoding, inbound and outbound: Weatern ISO-8859-1

Any thoughts? Thank you kindly.

My issue began when I changed my Gmail password. Now every time I try to connect to gmail, Google login prompt pops up. I keep clicking "allow", but to no avail. Google security notified me that an unauthorized device was trying to gain access to my gmail account and gives me no options. What am I to do?

All my settings seem to be in order both in Gmail and Thunderbird. What have I missed?

Note: two other Gmail accounts are working seamlessly.

Please help.

My computer crashed recently, I was told the repairer backed up all my files. I went in to find my emails, could not find anything. My computer has been working for a month, I've accumulated some important emails again, how do I back them up so I don't loose them all again?

Just wanted to post how to fix 2step authentication with icloud as all the posts I have read are incorrect or have mistakes. 2 Factor Authentication won't work with Thunderbird, so 2Step Authentication is required. 2FA is only for Apple devices.

1. login to icloud using this link: - https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage/2sv

2. sign in to your Apple ID account page. In the Security section, enable 2step authentication This will take you through the first stage of the setup, instructions here - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204152

When you have enabled step you will then have to wait few days for apple to setup the account for 2step authentication, they will send you an email warning you this has been requested. After a few days apple will send you an email confirming this is now ready.

4. Next sign in to your Apple ID account page. In the Security section, following onscreen instructions to generate app password, this will send an sms code to your mobile phone confirming your identiy. When this is completed, it will log you out and each time (via web browser) send an sms code to your mobile. Now proceed to create an app specific password.

You can generate an app-specific password, sign in to your Apple ID account page. In the Security section, click Edit > Generate Password. Process wil take you through setting up the app-specific password, so app name will be thunderbird, and it will generate a recovery key and password for you.

Hopefully when this is all done, will take a 3-5 days to get setup.

in Thunderbird the settings should be

SERVER SETTINGS IMAP - imap.mail.me.com port 993 username will be just first part of your email so joebloggs (NOT joeblogs@me.com) connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication Normal Password

OUTGOING SERVER SMTP SERVER (Select icloud smtp settings) server name: smtp.mail.me.com PORT 587 Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication Method: Normal Passwrod Usersname: Joebloggs (your username without @icloud.com)

The password for your email will be only your app-specific password key that was generated early.. nothing else.

When your logging in to icloud via the web browser, it will be your original password plus sms code sent to your mobile. The app-specific password key is only for thunderbird.

I hope this helps those that had problems, it caused me weeks of issues to sort out.

My OS is Win 8.1. My TB is 24.4. It worked fine yesterday 03-18-2014, but today it just runs and runs, no errors, no retrieval of email. I don't know what to look for or how to correct this extreme problem and have had to work with another email program that is not nearly as good as TB.

I have not added (as far as I know) any other program. There have been no notices of invasions to my OS.

I am not familiar with Win 8.1 protocols.

Hi, when sending an email I am getting the mailed delivery failed with the above error. I have been able to send emails to the same address for years and can still send emails to other addresses. The recipient has confirmed that they can also send and receive emails no problem. I can still send to this address from my hotmail account too, so I know it works. It seems strange that this problem only just started to occur in the last few weeks. Can anyone help please?

Thunderbird 31.1 Address book wont export all of 318 emails addresses. It stops at 275 or so. I export to a spreadsheet so I can edit them to be imported by GMAIL. I have tried exporting fewer addresses but for some reason I can't move more than 20 to another list to export. This would be an easy workaround if the current address book could be cut in half and exported 2x.

I use WIN 7, FireFox and Tbird.

This started after a recent upgrade. All the emails I send or receive are text only. I have gone over the information on Remote Content and I understand about the images - which are also missing. Changing those settings seem to have no affect in giving me back my HTML formats. I have found the Composition -> Send Options and it was checked to Send plain text and I unchecked this option. The results are no different. I have the drop set as "Send the message in both plain text and HTML"

I tried adding DOMAINS to the box to indicate HTML email addresses and it allows me to add but then does not save my entries.

I am sure this is some kind of new default but I can not find any way to resolve the problem.

I sent an email to myself and this is the kind of thing I get, instead of HTML:

"This is a test of the email functions*I am making this bold and this purple.*" I get stars instead of the HTML formatting.

I have recently updated Thunderbird to the last version (24.6.0). Since then I cannot send email to smtp.gmail.com. This has worked perfectly for many years. I did not change anything in the configuration! I can receive emails without any problems, but when I try to send an email I get this error message: "The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.gmail.com timed out.". The configuration is:


Server name: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Connection security: STARTLS Authentication method: Normal password User name: XXXXXXX@gmail.com


I have verified that I can reach smtp.gmail.com with PING and with TELNET. The reaction from the server is shorter than 1 or 2 seconds, there is no time out.

My wife has a laptop where Thunderbird is also installed, and like me, she has a Gmail account. But her Thunderbird version is 24.5.0, just one step behind my version 24.6.0. Sending email from her Thunderbird works perfectly, no issues, no time outs. The connection is made from the same location (same IP address) as me. Given this facts, I have to conclude that update 24.6.0 has possibly broken something in this area; I cannot think of another explanation for this problem. I have advised my wife not to upgrade. Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround for this problem? Thanks in advance.

Every so often, usually when I hit "Junk", "Archive" or "Delete", or try to move pages Thunderbird hangs. Sometimes, this happens when typing an email or just 'clicking' into one inbox or another.

I'm forced to wait for anywhere between 10sec. - 2mins before the application is functional again. I've tried all of the suggestions regarding safe mode, disabling plugins, etc. and none of it helps. This happens on 3 different PC's, all with very different specs:

PC 1 (Work): 16GM DDR3 RAM 3.2Ghz AMD A8-5500 (Quad core) Windows 8 Pro 64-bit - w/ latest updates, service packs, etc.

PC 2 (Home): 32GB DDR3 RAM 3.1Ghz AMD FX-8120 (8 physical cores + 8MB cache) Win 7 Ultimate x64 - w/ latest updates, services pack, etc.

Laptop: 8GB DDR3 RAM 2.4 Ghz Intel i7 (not sure which specific offhand) Win 8 x64, fully patched.

As you can see, it's not likely to be an issue with low specs. One is high spec., another is very high spec. and the other is just a pretty good laptop.

I have 6 mail accounts mapped, but this happens, intermittently, with all mail accounts and is made all the more infuriating, because I have to use this client for 8-1/2 hours a day, every week day. The hangs happen anywhere between 3 and 30 times, daily..... you could see how that would start to get on someone's nerves. Also, it's very unlikely to be an issue with the mail server that I'm connected to, because my work PC has a direct, wired LAN connection to the server.

Any help any Mozilla dev. can provide would be beyond appreciated! If you need anything more from me, just ask.
