I've been using Thunderbird for a long time. I use a Win 10 machine with the latest version of Thunderbird. There are 5 email accounts attached to Thunderbird. When writing email I am suddenly unable to use numbering, bullets, or indents on 3 of the 5 accounts. After throwing up my hands in desperation I uninstalled Thunderbird (after saving the Profile folder), downloaded the latest version and reinstalled it. Same problem.

I posted about this about a week ago and the consensus seemed to be that this could not happen. But it is. I would really appreciate some help on this.

My Thunderbird is completely updated. Since July I have found it impossible to consistently send emails. I checked my outgoing settings and they are fine. I have no anti-virus (I'm using a Mac). When I turn off the firewall, I can send one email out, sometimes two, then they will no longer go out. I tried deleting Thunderbird from the firewall, then adding it again. Nothing doing. This occurs with both email addresses I use.

Should I remove Thunderbird from my computer and start over? Or is it a lost cause?

On 22/7/22 I used my laptop in hospital using their WiFi I only mention this as it was on this date when I opened Thunderbird that I realised I had lost all my emails from the inbox except for the most recent, so there were only four messages currently showing. I checked all folders Junk/Trash etc but there was nothing to be found. There is one email from January 2020 that remains in the inbox but it was not highlighted or starred so I have no idea why that one should remain when hundreds of others have been deleted. Is there any way to find these messages as some of them are really important and relate to financial matters. I really hope someone can help me. It was suggested that Avast anti virus may be responsible but I have contacted Avast and they say it has nothing to do with Avast. Regards Alex

I am still trying to recover lost emails from my inbox. I contacted Avast as it was suggested the anti virus program might be responsible but they insist it has nothing to do with them. I can not find a contact telephone number for Thunderbird support in Australia so am trying this forum again in the hope someone can tell me if I can recover these lost emails. I tried instructions from one website but after finding the Local folder in Account settings the options described in the instructions did not match what was available to me so I was not able to go any further. I am considering trying 'Easeus' which is a free download that claims to fix this kind of problem and gets quite good reviews, I am just concerned that I'll hit a brick wall again if the tabs or options in a particular file don't match the instructions as that leaves me nowhere to go. I even allowed a local computure guru remote access to my laptop but he couldn't work out where the missing emails were which is very concerning as I had hoped he had seen this kind of problem before as there are so many articles on line about missing emails with Thunderbird. I hope someone can offer some suggestions. Cheers Alex

Thunderbird Version 102 - Automatic download HOSED my PROFILE - Accounts, emails GONE!

The QUICK version is that Thunderbird automatically downloaded and installed 102.1.2, it "updated" my profile, completely corrupted it and NOW It's acting like a NEW install - NO accounts or emails, it's demanding that I enter my first email account information.

I've tried going back to version 91 and it can't read EITHER of my saved profiles because 102 "upgraded" them. Version 102 IMPORT routine DOES NOT WORK EITHER. Probably thinks that profile is already at 102 even though it WON'T utilize it.

I'm entirely HOSED - all email accounts and all emails GONE GONE GONE.

It's demanding that I setup a new email account before it will allow me to do anything!

I've just spent a half hour trying to find a copy of version 92.


VERSION 102 hosed my email.

What NOW?

It demands that I setup a new email account and from what I read here my 2 dozen email accounts and thousands of emails may not be accessible any more anyway.

WHERE CAN I GET A COPY OF 92????

From what you are describing, it seems like your TB is not recognizing your profile -- which would cause it to ask you to set up a new one. I would be more specific about exactly what you did to get to this point. You also might want to check what the profile manager is saying. Select the 3 bars in the upper right corner of TB, then Help>more troubleshooting information. Near the bottom of the first table that appears you can click on about:profiles. It should list any profiles TB recognizes. If more than one profile is listed, you might try switching to another one to see if that recovers what you missing. At any rate, more information about specifically what you did, the exact version of 102, etc. will help folks on this forum to give you assistance. The problems described in this thread seem to have been fixed by the versions of 102 at least from 102.1.xxx. At any rate, your emails should still be there on the servers.


8/16/2022:

VERSION 102.2 has DESTROYED ME!!!

When it automatically updated on BOTH my laptop and desktop, I could no longer access my email profile - NO EMAILS and ALL of my 20 email accounts are GONE GONE GONE.

I tried updating with earlier version - doesn't work because 102.2 RUINED MY PROFILE.

I tried updating with 102.2 again and then IMPORTING my accounts and messages from profile and It's STILL demanding that I setup from start again.


I didn't see your response at first, my previous email details what happened. I'll add other steps here:

Getting ready to go on the road for a week. Copied my entire Thundebird profile (26 Gig) to an SSD USB Drive.

Had older version on my laptop - not sure which version - connected to profile, got new emails but NO message bodies would appear in the message window.

Thunderbird automatically "updated" on laptop and then email was hosed - acts like new install.

Then the SAME thing happened on my desktop.

Now ALL of my profiles are screwed! I'm on the road so I don't have ANY email setup information.


"Mark Lang": The TB team recently changed the settings so that that internal updating function would upgrade users to version 102.1.2. Previously, you only got version 102 (instead of the 91.xx series) if you specifically downloaded the new version from the website. Version 102 is a major upgrade and does change the profile folder. It seems like, for some reason, your TB install is not recognizing the folder as changed. This will likely require some work from the development team to track down. Perhaps something is not working with the internal upgrade function. One user reported that he simply downloaded the full install file for version 102.1.2 from the website and reinstalled it, and it then worked fine. You might try that.

I downloaded a complete install for 102.1.2 TODAY and installed it on my laptop.

Then I ran the import from my old profile. It SAID it imported Although it seemed to happen rather fast...

Then SAME THING!!!

I start Thunderbird and it Demands I enter email account to setup.

I won't be able to do much with your tech guys until I fly back home - I'll be home in Hawai'i by Thursday (8/18).

The "updates" that hosed my email were automatic. I DID NOT request them.


My problem is I can't get to my email - EVERYTHING is HOSED in my Profile. I've tried running the import, it says it imports from old profile and doesn't. We're talking at least a dozen email accounts.

It's as if I had NEVER had TB on my computer and I am starting from scratch.

This F.U. occurred just as I was leaving home to go on a trip.

I was a professional computer programmer, consultant, systems designer from 1965 until 2006. It's amazing how techies don't realize that their "mistakes" can really mess up someone's life. I gotta' admit it took quite a few years before I realized what I was doing.

You are saying you imported from your old profile. (NO - IMPORT DID NOT WORK!)

When TB did the update to 102.1.2, it should have converted the profile in place and opened with everything as it was already set up. (IT DID CONVERT - then accounts were gone, email was gone, got NOTHING as described above. Acts like a new install on computer that never had Tbird on it before.)

You should not have to import anything. I am not quite sure how you are importing unless you exported the profile earlier. Perhaps the import process is what is messing up your profile. If you tried an import process that did not work for some reason, that might be why it is asking you to set up everything again. Perhaps the import created a new profile that is blank because it did not import properly. I would go to about:profiles like I suggested earlier. Maybe your original profile is still there. If you see multiple profiles, try switching to the other ones to see if your old profile with all your emails is there, just not selected as the current profile.


I have COMPLETE "corrupted" profiles saved on 2 computers - my desktop and laptop. All of the files are there but Version 102 has corrupted them so they won't work on 102 and won't work on earlier version 91.12.0 that I downloaded and installed either - of course.

Did you really just update to version 102 immediately prior to going on a trip? Old Thunderbird releases can be found at https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ Available profiles can be listed by doing Help > More Troubleshooting Info > about:profiles

I running Windows11 on a new HP laptop. Out of blue, I am unable to send any picture files attached to my emails. There is no problem sending *.pdf or *.doc files but *.jpg, *gif and *.png files are rejected due to "suspected spam" (is what the messge reads).

I've tried different platforms, e.g., iPhone, and windows laptop, and different email accounts. My email provider, Hughes, tells me it must be the particular files, however it is doubtful that my entire collection of family pictures are somehow now spam. I have scanned my entire hard drive for malware, virus and the usual (Kasperky Plus) and it comes up clean, no issues.

I have disabled the email protection on my email to no affect. Picture files are still rejected.

I have tried two different email accounts; Mozilla Thunderbird and Protonmail. Both accounts will not send the picture file attachments, but as mentioned will send other file attachments.

Any suggestions?

3rd post - it would be nice to get a response. I cannot send emaIL FROM THIS WIN 10 FULLY UPDated APP. The error message as above appears all the time (and does not cancel after 1 hour or whatever). Email can be sent using the same smtp settings from various Android devices. Forum suggestions do not cure the problem.

This, along with all the other annoying glitches within T'bird, seem to be forcing me to abandon using T'bird after many, many years. Shame.

Thunderbird changed over night, and is VERY jacked up... none of my inboxes have anything in them, and one of my Email addresses and folder don't exist!!! I received a response from my earlier rant


Try the following:

Set this setting:

   'View' > 'Folders' > 'All' 

Then do this:

   Menu icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
   Under 'Application Basics' - half way is Profile Folders - click on 'Open Folder' 

window opens showing contents of your profile name folder

   Exit Thunderbird now - this is important 

Scroll down and delete the following files:

   folderCache.json
   folderTree.json
   virtualFolders.dat
   session.json
   xulstore.json 

Click on 'Mail' folder

   delete 'smart mailboxes' folder 

(do not worry if it does not exist - it just means you have never used Unified)

Start Thunderbird.

Please Report back on results.


BUT IM ON A MAC....SO I NEED HELP IN MY SYSTEM TO GET THIS STRAIGHTENED OUT....OR I PREFER TO GO BACK TO THE OLD PLATFORM....THAT WASN'T BROKE!!!

Outlook email is working fine, after changing or giving password but not embarqmail address a Centurylink address which has recently been sold to Brighthouse. I've changed servers, (both are correct) outgoing & incoming ; problem has been going on for 2 weeks! I can receive email from " centurylink.net " but I can't send messages. I believe I was autumnally upgraded to T-bird 78, as I've used T-bird for years without problems. At first I was " locked out " of using my two accounts with T-bird & outlook ..... but after consulting with centurylink support, plus.......outlook.....I resolved problems except for sending emails from centurylink.net. I've included upon request from T-bird support two attachments hopefully, showing " error message" and' T-birds outgoing server info.' I've changed my centurylink.net PassWord , and that enabled messages to arrive in T-bird. I have filled in new password in window for password , but I still can't send! I also have correct port...following are error messages I receive: "sending of username did not succeed. Mail server pop.embarqmail.com responder: highermark is not an invalid mailbox. Account should be fully qualified email address."...." Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMPT) smtp.embarqmail.com timed out . Try again" I tried again.....and again several times but message still isn't sent. i will contact centurylink support again, as password may need to be changed again............but I receive messages now, at least. I DON"T want that to lock me out again. mj

I recently submitted a support request where I attached two files. One of them were incorrect. Submitting correct file now. Sorry for confusion. Outgoing server: smpt. centurylink.net (default) Since last request, I managed to send from centurylink.net web page.......an email addressed to highermark@outlook.com, but still can't send by using Thunderbird. So Password reset isn't necessary. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Firewall, antivirus software or your Internet service provider.  ??? How can I do this?

When importing WLM contacts.csv file to TB, the fields available do not match the source fields. For example, for the source email file there is no corresponding selection available in the destination selection. How can I select the appropriate destination field? (I copied a screen shot to Word, but since I upgraded to Windows 10 I can't find files.)
