A while back I upgraded to version 78 only to realize that was a major mistake for me. It wasn't easy but eventually I got myself back to version 68 and turned off automatic updates to be sure that I would stay on 68.

Then, out of nowhere, when I rebooted my machine I was back on 78 and have no idea how that happened. Once again, I went through the painful backward migration but kept wondering how the second forward migration happened since I had turned off automatic updates.

I think I may know, now, how the second migration to 78 happened. Something like once a day, Thunderbird pops up a dialog box asking me if I want to upgrade and it appears that the affirmative is the default selection. I am afraid that at some point that dialog box popped up, stole my focus just as I was hitting 'RETURN' and it downloaded and installed 78 in the background. I didn't find out about it until I rebooted my machine and reopened Thunderbird.

I don't want that to happen again -- I cannot currently run on 78. I would really like to stop it harassing me to upgrade -- I will upgrade when it is okay for me to do so. Is there some way to stop that dialog from popping up?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hello, my Thunderbird performed yesterday ,9 November 2020, an automatic update to version 78.4.0 (from 68.12.1). Since then all my emails in my inbox and archive folders have disappeared. Also the archive folders with the submap structures are gone. Very annoying. I am not so experienced in trouble shooting. I have two hotmail accounts in use. So, I check on forums for a solution and one direction was to check the profiles in the help/problem solving tab. But it showed only two profiles for main and local. I checked in the AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Mail the Archives.sbd with all the subfolders still there. Then I changed in the account settings the link in the local map to the Archives.sbd. I don't know if this is the correct method, though but now something happened: It retrieved all emails from the hotmail server (hotmail inbox and also those in the hotmail subfolders) and it constructed some archive folders and some subfolders. So I am still missing half of my archived emails and have too many emails in my inbox. How can I fix this and why didn't the Thunderbird update smoothly take over the existing map structure from the previous version? Thanks in advance for your support. Best regards, René

PS: if any additional information is needed from me, please let me know. Thanks.

every email I receive goes straight into the junk folder. this started months ago and I couldnt resolve it. even went to the trouble of uninstalling thunderbird and reinstalling but problem remains. stopped using thunderbird but decided to give it another go and still all incoming emails go to the junk folder

even when I transfer all my emails out of junk into the inbox they almost immediately go back in the junk folder. I'm guessing its a setting problem but I havent been able to fix

All I need to know is, how to automatically sort emails into their various subfolders. When I was using Outlook, it had a 'create rule' feature whereby you could get it to automatically put emails from certain addresses straight into the right subfolder. The title of the subfolder would be in bold and next to it a number of how many unread emails were there. I cannot seem to find anything in help that addresses this - there are far too many articles to process with "protocals", "add-ons", "IMAP"...it's all beyond me. Frankly this is just another reason I am getting increasingly frustrated with Thunderbird. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be most grateful.

How can I compact my mail without purging any messages?

Prior to a recent update I'd get a message to compact, I'd compact and all was well and none of my messages were purged/deleted.

After the update (I'm on version 75.5.0), I get "The messages you have deleted can be purged from disk. This operation will save about 84.7 MB of disk space. Select the option below to let Thunderbird do this automatically without asking you."

I've read the few other threads on this and it's still not clear to me. Can I compact without deleting anything?

Thanks.

Prior to this update 78.5.0 the main menu words were legible (now mid grey on pale grey when I'm working elsewhere, almost invisible to older eyes), menus have lost all colour, the viewing pane has lost its - button to shrink the header to 2 lines. And there's this perpetual annoying message demanding I purge deleted files and no way of saying not to continue nagging me. All retrograde steps and, being a mere user, I don't want to fiddle with code to repair the damage, as advised in other help topics.

Since moving to Thunderbird 78 I have found that I am unable to 'Detach' or 'Delete' some [jpeg] attachments from emails. When doing so, it goes through the usual actions including the message that "this cannot be undone" but does not do so. Prior to this version it all worked as expected.

I have run though vacuous diagnostic tests (safe mode etc.,) but to no avail.

I would therefore be grateful for some assistance.

Many thanks

Hi,

We are using Windows 7 with roaming profiles. The AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles directory keep swelling until it is takes a really long time to log in or log out.

The Thunderbird profiles were deleted and new local profiles were created in the AppData/Local/Thunderbird directory. However it has recently been discovered that these have somehow made their way back into the Roaming profile.

The installation of Thunderbird is done by Wpkg. It runs a script on setup which sets Thunderbird to not download messages onto the local and not to download large attachments. But this behaviour no longer works in recent versions. Also it is overwritten by new releases of Thunderbird. The script originally tried to suppress Thunderbird from updating but this behaviour has also ceased to function.

Hi to everyone, first time here.

Went to look at TB and noticed it was now '78' and so had to redo it for my Gmail emails.

I made the mistake of redoing the first Gmail account in 'imap'. Of course, now it shows all the emails from that account; a few thousand. I was about to delete and redo again but I held back thinking that might end up deleting all the emails on the Gmail server too. I did a little reading around and it seems that would have been the case. So, how do I redo the account to pop3 while not affecting any mails on the gmail server?

Note: I did a second account in pop3 and it works just like I want it to only showing the most recently arrived emails and all the other folders clear.

Thanks for any help.

Daniel
