settings for a simple experience with gmail and thunderbird

I am in my 70s and have been through a lot in the last 3 years (flooded home, my husband, dog and chihuahua living in a tiny room for a year and a half, suffering a $50,000 loss to a shifty contractor, two cancer scares, etc.), and the latest challenge--the pandemic--has fried what used to be my pretty good brain cells. Now,I find that in order to continue using technology, I must have step-by-step directions, preferably with pictures, or I simply cannot function in the tech world. I am not quite ready to give up, so I was wondering if some kind soul(s) out there that still have working brain cells would be willing to help me? My dad kept his computer skills going until he passed away at 92, and I am hoping to be that fortunate, but it is not looking good. Everything is so interwoven now days, it drives me to distraction.

I have managed to set up a gmail account, then installed Thunderbird on my desktop, but I am at a loss understanding what configuration to use to get the easy-to-use performance I want. Some notes:

1. When I get an email, I do not need to archive it anywhere (not sure what that means anyway). I open the mail, read it and then save it to the appropriate folder on my hard drive, then delete the copy in my Thunderbird (and, hopefully, it deletes in gmail). I don't know what ALL MAIL is or why I need it? What should my settings be to accomodate my system? Once I have saved an email to my hard drive or deleted it, I want it gone, period, from gmail and Thunderbird. I usually only have email from the current or previous day, that's it. I keep a clean inbox and have a highly structured set of folders to save any emails I want throughout my hard drive in the logical folders for them.

2. I like sent mail copIes in a SENT mail folder until I delete them because sometimes I check back to see what I sent.

3. I want the contacts set up in gmail synced to Thunderbird and stay current with any changes in either email client.

4.The DRAFTS folder is important so that, if I am interrupted, I can come back and finish mail later.

5. I do not want LABELS, IMPORTANT, STARS or any other folder to complicate things. I just want INBOX, DRAFTS, SENT, SPAM, AND TRASH...and when I put it in TRASH, I want it gone when I close Thunderbird.

6. In summary, I just want the basics so that I can continue to use technology no matter what challenges are going on in my life.... for another decade, if possible.

I am using a Lenovo Legion laptop, Windows 10 64bits, Chrome (sorry, Firefox, but I am too old to switch now), and Thunderbird whatever the latest version is. I truly love Thunderbird, but I cannot figure out what settings to use to accomplish the system above.

This Texas granny would be forever grateful if any brainy people out there could dumb-down some steps for me to accomplish the above... and if you have screenshots, I will sing your praises from now until eternity!

Other info requested: --Mail provider: bresnan.net --ISP: Spectrum.net --Antivirus sorftware: Norton 360 --Operating system: Windows 10 home, 10.0.18363 (Dell XPS 8900 x64-based PC) --Thunderbird version: 68.11.0 (32-bit)

I have internet access. I can send and receive email when logged into the Spectrum.net website. I can send email to my other account (gmail) using Thunderbird. My problem is not being able to send email using Thunderbird.

After I was update my Thunderbird to 78 the program is useless. I have 1600 contacts and every time I was open the contacts or write an email the software is frozen. After I remove my history.sqlite (my contacts) the Thunderbird work fine.

Before the update I used Thunderbird 68.11 I have for mail accounts and all of them IMAP. I use the default contacts manager and I don't have add-ons.

Windows 10 2004 Thunderbird 78.1.1

My Thunderbird updated today, and suddenly all of my emails are showing white text on black backgrounds, except for those incoming emails that have their own color schemes. In those cases, the text appears pretty dark against the black background. Changing themes doesn't seem to make a difference. Was there something in the update that made this happen? How do I fix it?

Hi all. I seem to got into a right mess with the layout of my emails and now, when I see an email I get Message ID and Return path showing, which never showed before; also, when I print out an email I now get an enormous amout of script with a load of gobbledebgook. I just want plain, no frills emails and print outs! How do I restore Thunderbird to a simple format? Thanks in advance, David

Po aktualizácii Thunderbird z 68.12.0 na 78.2.2. nefunguje prijatie pošty jednej z mailových schránok. V Thubderbirde mám nastavené tri rôzne emailové schránky, po aktualizácii dve fungujú bez problémov. Jedná má problém s prijatím správ. Nestiahne aktuálne správy a nevypíše ani chybu. Správa sa ale odoslať dá. Skúsil som konto odstrániť a nastaviť nanovo a pri nastavení všetkých údajov Thunderbird konto nevytvorí a napíše "Thunderbirdu sa nepodarilo nájsť nastavenie pre Váš poštový účet". Skúšal som prihlásiť konto aj na iných mailových klientoch, tam všetko funguje bez problémov. Vopred ďakujem za pomoc, alebo radu.

I am using TBird 68.7. I use IMAP and have set up numerous local folders where I store my emails. I move things from my Inbox to my local folders for storage, both to free up the inbox, and so they aren't online where they can be hacked. How does this differ from setting of archives and a folder structure to store my emails? Do archives reside in a separate place on my HD so that the TBird profiles folder does not become as large. I have read all the archive articles and they describe how to do it (which I understand) but not why I would want to do it. Please advise.

I am a new user to Thunderbird and have downloaded and installed the latest version. I am trying to create mailing lists from my contacts and have followed the guidance given here online. If I create a new Mailing List I cannot add contacts to it by dragging and dropping. If I pick up a contact, I can drag and drop it to other folders but if I try to drop the contact into a mailing list I get a circle with a diagonal line across it and nothing happens. I am running Windows 10 and have tried on both my desktop and laptop with no success - am I missing something?

My laptop locked up and I had to reset windows with the keep personal data option. However, upon restart whilst my documents were visible no Thunderbird mail or local accounts were visible and Thunderbird reverted to a new install screen. I restored windows to a previous version a couple of days older which upon restart reinstated my email accounts but without the passwords, however I cannot find my local folders at all? This is a disaster for me.... Can anyone help please? Thanks Adrian

The background color on the screen for composing a message is black, and the text is red. This happens for when using "Write" to open the composing screen, or using a template to compose. Even though the background and text during composition is black and red, respectively, the sent message is on a white background with black text. I would like the screen for composing the message to also be white text with black background and for those to be the default colors. Thank you.

I have been using a very old version of Thunderbird (3.1.20) and I now need to move to the latest version. I am hoping it will be possible to migrate the old profile in its entirety, with folders, stored POP mail, addresses and accounts to the latest version. I understand about editing profiles.ini to point to a backup copy of the old profile instead of the default profile, but I am not sure if the profile structure has been changed in later versions. Would I do this using the Profile Manager? Does it allow you to browse to a Profile backup location?

Also the existing paths in profiles.ini now seem to have slashes rather than backslashes. Is this a change I have to make in the editing of the path to the old profile I want to use?

Cant Send E mail in TB only. Same E mail account works perfect in web mail based yahoo. Can receive ok in TB, just cant send. iphone send & receive is all problem free. No settings chg. since 2016, using win7 professional, google. Account. is thru att.net. Upgraded with the security key as suggested in prev. TB messages. Worked fine until today. Disabled Norton & win protection. No help, all settings are the same for years: try to send mail, dialog box pops up: Login to server outbound.att.net with username xxx@att.net failed. 3 choice boxes: 'retry'/'enter new password'/'cancel.' Created a new PW when I acquired the new security key code from att. Settings: outbound.att.net (default) /port 465/SSL-TLS/Normal PW. IMAP MAIL SERVER: imap.mail.att.net /port 993 Have entered correct PW in dialog box many times with the same result. Have no idea what is wrong in sending mail only.

When trying to create a new email account the following problem was encountered.

Step 1: create a new gmail account at Google. Step 2: verify the new account works via the web interface Step 3: log out and log back in to that account via the web to verify login credentials Step 3: create a new Thunderbird account using that same new email address

See the video below for the problem. I hope there is a work-around or a solution. This problem appears in both new accounts and existing accounts where the password has recently been changed.
