Hi! I'm about to get a new computer and I need to understand the best way to move Thunderbird with all my emails to the new computer.

Should I just install Thunderbird in the new computer and then add my e-mail accounts from scratch? Or is it better to find this profile folder, copy and paste it to the profile folder on the new computer? Which way is best? I run mac OS 12.7.3 on the old computer and will update to a new Mac Book Pro computer with the lates OS. The Thunderbird-version is now 115.8.0 in the old computer.

I got a new laptop and wanted to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for an existing Gmail account. I tried several times, all failed, with a warning "unable to connect with server imap.gmail.com, may be userid and password are wrong". But I can logon to my Gmail account (with the same userid and password) on Firefox website and on my previous computer, so the id and password are correct). And I was able to set up another Gmail account on Thunderbird in this new laptop (so the version of Mozilla is not the culprit) with the same server settings (port for incoming and outgoing mails, authentication methods SL/TLS, O Auth2 etc). Will someone please help me?

Hi all, I am a lifelong fan of Firefox but for some reason got hooked into Mac Mail many years ago and just kinda stuck there. I have often wanted to switch to Thunderbird but due to such huge amounts of email and local folders, I never felt brave enough!

Having now finally had my fill of Apple, I am moving all my computing over to Linux (Fedora). This is scary but so far so good, please note I am not a CLI wizard! :)

I have 20 years (or more) of email nicely organised in folders in Mac Mail on OSX 10.14.6 (mojave). Yes I know it's out of date now, hence the move rather than suffer one more Mac update :)

Nearly all my email is in folders "On My Mac", I like to keep all mail locally. Having been that way for 20 years and having run several businesses, websites, and a lot of personal groups and stuff, you can imagine the volume of email I have. I can't afford to get this wrong so I was hoping for some kind person to walk me through the choices of ways to do it, or refer me to a guide if there is one (I couldn't find one yet).

I fear I may be complicating matters but not only converting from Mac Mail to Thunderbird, but converting OS's as well. maybe I should break it down into two stages?

Any advice very much appreciated.

thanks

I am trying to move back to Thunderbird from Apple Mail. The issue I am having is that Thunderbird is not pulling my sent messages on my Mac or in Linux. When I used Thunderbird in the past this was not an issue. I checked the forum and my iCloud and Fastmail accounts are set up as IMAP. What has me confused is that Thunderbird pulled three messages with very old dates but nothing else.

I have just completed transferring Thunderbird from Windows 10 (32 bit) to Windows 11 (64 bit). Running 115 on both machines. The transfer went well but ..... In my profile in the sub folder Mail, I ended up with 3 folders - Local Folders, XXXX.com (XXXX is the incoming sever name) and XXXX-1.com. This happened purely by chance with the XXXX-1 file containing all the data and folders off the old PC and the XXXX containing the emails from my internet provider from the time my old PC had died until the transfer.

I renamed the XXXX-1 file and opened it in Thunderbird - all the emails were there.

Seperately I did the same with the XXXX file - no emails appeared in Thunderbird.

If I click on the XXXX file then click on Inbox and open it with Notepad, I can all the new emails. The XXXX file inbox does not contain any of the old emails.

I have tried everything to open the XXXX file in Thunderbird (incluing renaming and cut/paste) all to no avail. And, of course, the emails were deleted off from my internet provider by Thunderbird when they were downloaded!

Can anyone suggest a way I can retrieve the emails off the XXXX file?

I was finally forced to upgrade from win7 (which worked) to win 10 (me no likey) because of a required program which would not even install on win7. After the upgrade, which obliterated my hard drive of several important things, I am reinstalling TB. I always used an NAS directory for Thunderbird, and have email records going back nearly twenty years. I installed TB 115 and have tried several ways to get it to recognize my profile directory on the NAS to no avail. I tried copying data into the default directory the 115 install is looking at. The about:profiles shows it is looking in the correct directory, it produces a parent.lock file in that directory when I run the program. It does not give me my email, or contacts. I do not use the calendar or to-do lists.

My system is an AMD K6-6400K with 16 GB and a 500 GB drive. Though programs are loaded on the drive ALL data is stored in an NAS. There is about 375 GB available on the C drive.

I have used the cmd line to pull up profile manager, added a profile, pointed it to the data that is on the NAS, a parent lock file is created there too but it shows me no mail.

I have edited the profiles.ini file manually to have the program look at the directories, both the NAS and a local directory which has had the old files entered. Neither worked.

I tried opening TB and creating a new profile and pre-loading the info there, nothing. I've been at this for days now. I have uninstalled and removed manually all TB folders and reinstalled older versions to give that a go but without effect. I am no Luddite (Many years ago I owned a system integration, assembly and install company doing networking for the military as a civilian contractor.) but someone has to explain this to me like I am a five year old. There is no reason having my email back should be this difficult!

PLEASE give me a hand?

My TB directory appears in C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird My old data folder was on a network drive at M:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\profiles\k5zbs5az.default When I manually enter the M: address in the profiles.ini file, it "corrects" it to C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\ even though the switch 'relative' is off.

[Profile1] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/zpfeu8eu.default Default=1

[Profile0] Name=default-beta IsRelative=0 Path=C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird

[General] StartWithLastProfile=0 Version=2

[Install5D388C1349709B37] Default=C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird Locked=1

Running the Mozilla application with a specific profile using command line arguments brings up the program but no mail. It creates a lock file in the correct directory, but no joy.

I get no pop up error messages.

I'm converting from a Windows 10 computer to a new Windows 11 computer.

On the new computer, Thunderbird is installed and it's all set up and working.

On the old computer, in Thunderbird there is a folder ("named Keepers") where I have a bunch of emails that I want to keep.

Is there some way I can copy that folder over to Thunderbird on the new computer?

Before I updated to Supernova, when I opened Thunderbird and there was an update available, a window would automatically open in Thunderbird showing the available update (screenshot attached), which allowed me to read the Release Notes to see what was being updated, before applying the update.

However, since updating to Supernova, this no longer happens.

I have always had my settings set to General / Updates / Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them and as I said, this worked until updating to Supernova.

So can someone tell me what I need to do, to get the update window opening automatically again?

Thanks.

My email provider is Comcast. I have several server folders there.

When I installed TB, one is missing though. I've logged into Comcast directly to confirm it's there.

There's no .msf for the folder in ImapMail/imap.comcast.net/ under my Profile--the others are there.

How do I get TB to fetch this folder / re-fetch all folders? Thanks!
