I tried using Thunderbird to check my Office 365 email, with the following settings

IMAP: outlook.office365.com Port: 143 SSL: STARTTLS

SMTP: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 SSL: STARTTLS

Normal Password

All the settings are retried by Thunderbird once I enter the IMAP and SMTP details.

However upon clicking done, there will be a message saying "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password"

I have verified the username and password is correct, and also IMAP enabled for this account, but keep getting password wrong message.

I'm trying with utter lack of success to configure a Thunderbird install to link to a Gmail account via IMAP.

System Basics: Windows 10 Home, 64bit, fully patched. Antivirus by MalwareBytes 4.30 Premium, fully updated. No fancy firewall, just a regular router.

This account had been installed and working fine until a family member "helpfully" changed the Gmail password, but reauthentication fails. I enter the account details, including password, into the Thunderbird Accounts settings for the account; it pings Google and correctly retrieves all the IMAP settings, and when I click "Done" Thunderbird opens a browser window to Google's two-step authentication with the email address prepopulated. However, when I click the blue "Next" button on that authentication page, rather than advancing to a password screen, the browser simply deletes the email address from the text box and stays on the same screen (see attached image for what I'm talking about).

Things I've tried:

  • Uninstall, reboot, reinstall Thunderbird.
  • Turn off MalwareBytes protection.
  • Uninstall, delete every registry key related to Thunderbird, reboot, reinstall Thunderbird.
  • Clear cache on every browser on the system
  • Change Windows default browser settings to either Chrome (see below) or IE/Edge
  • Install new browser (Chrome wasn't yet on this PC), then change Thunderbird's file handler for https to Chrome (this is MUCH harder than it used to be as T-Bird v. 78.anything doesn't have the old "Preferences" menus)

Incidentally, changing browsers doesn't seem to make a difference in that pop-up browser window, so I suspect Thunderbird is using its own internal browser and not the system browser.

I have, and can send, the support info extract from T-bird to a support technician but am unsure of uploading it here. Nevertheless, I welcome suggestions ... this is driving me nuts!

I got a new desktop box and installed Kubuntu on it. On my old box (Mint) I used Thunderbrid and I want to preserve my years of e-mails I stored on mail folders on my PC. On the new box I created my e-mail account making sure that it was not using the default mbox (all e-mail in 1 file) but maildir (each e-mail in its own file) as on the old box. But when I copy the "Local Folders" from my old to my new Mail directory, Thunderbird does list the directories (with subdirs " cur" and "tmp"), but does not appear to recognise the e-mail files.

In Thunderbird under menu there is "Tools" that has a wizard " Import". However when I select to import Mail, I only get a message "No application or file to import data from was found."

So how can I import my old mail files in the new Thunderbird instance?

Hello guys, I'm a thunderbird fanatic and use it even at work managing 10+ accounts. Up to Thunderbird 68, all was super fine:

The massive profile with 60+ folder was well organized with a handful of incredible add-ons to: - color folders - customize color account background - manage folder sorting The workflow was smooth and very productive: the folder colored to my like, the new email received were visible at a glance in the related folder by simply browsing and detecting the different accent in the folder name, and so on.

I always loved updates and kept the auto update on... until yesterday when my 68 has been migrated automatically to 78 !

No one of the necessary add-ons works anymore! No one of those fantastic the developer is anymore interested in upgrading them (changes are too frequent, and need to invest too much time to upgrade them) The interface is to uniform, I cannot customize colors in the same efficient way.... If I want the same 60+ nested folder sorting, I need to rename all of them... When a folder receives a new email the accent color (sort of bold blue) is nearly same as that of a folder with unread email (bold black)... Oh my god, what a mess !

Since no add-ons are available to re arrange the profile like it was with Thunderbird 68, my only option is to roll-back to 68... and stay there until the necessary add-on will get back to 78 (if any).

Do you know how I can convert back my profile just upgraded to 78 back to 68 ???

Please Please Please, help me ! Pietro

Each time i clicked "replace previous data", and no Thunderbird account has been set up on the new PC. But that's as far as i can get, I cannot get it to open the profile so I can see my 3 years worth of mail. The instructions stop at replace previous data (or whatever the wording is). I'm tearing my ancient hair out as my old PC keeps crashing and I begin 2 training courses tonight to get my web sites and video sales moving. I used to be ok with tech when it was Windows 3.1 but I'm 75 now and am obviously a bit out of touch! H-E-L-P  !! John Reed, York, UK (John O'York on Facebook)

I have read probably 100 of your help topics and none of them seem to address my topic in plain english. I have used Thunderbird for years on a windows computer (currently windows 10, Tbird Ver 78.6.0) and I am trying to move my profile from my windows computer to a new Mac running Big Sur Ver 11.1. Thunderbird (for some unknown reason) actually created 4 different profiles on my windows machine (two under: users/alan/AppData/Local, and the same two profiles under users/alan/AppData/roaming) but I have figured out which profile that Thunderbird is using based upon the help/troubleshooting/profile folder/open folder (which happens to be one of the ones located under: users/alan/AppData/roaming) and it is 13.9GB. I copied this folder (and all included files) to a jump drive so that I could move it to my new Mac.

I am new to Apple and know nothing about their operating system. I downloaded Thunderbird from the Mozilla website and installed it according to their directions. I finally found the default profile on my Mac that was created when I installed Thunderbird and I deleted it. I copied my existing windows profile to the same location. Now when I start Thunderbird I am greeted with a message that states: "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
Obviously I have done something wrong. Please direct me how to correct my problem -- it seems like this should be pretty simple, but I am lost.
  Thank you very much!!

I have a completely new profile and a new installation of Thunderbird 78.8.1 and it's great! See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1327837 for how I got here. I now want to copy and paste my old address book to my new profile Previous help on this forum says that my old address book is in files abook.mab and history.mab but in my old profile these files are suffixed .bak (eg: abook.mab.bak) My new profile already has a few addresses - which I am happy to lose - but does not have any .bak files. For the address book it seems to have these: abook.sqlite abook.sqlite-shm abook.sqlite-wal

history.sqlite history.sqlite-shm history.sqlite-wal

Not a .mab (or .mab.bak) file to be seen.

Can I just copy and paste abook.mab.bak and history.mab.bak?

I'm in the middle of migrating to a new laptop (WIn 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro). The old one has TB 68.10.0, with Lightning. When I installed TB on the new laptop, it gave me 78. I had copied the profile folders already.

I'm having trouble with the (Google) calendar. First, it gave me no data/didn't sync and wouldn't let me do anything. I also tried importing the old one just to see, but that crashed TB. I tried unsubscribing, but that removed the calendar. I tried setting it up the old way, New, Network and pasting in the private Google link. It keeps reverting to Read Only, every time I try to do something. Then TB hangs up, doesn't display properly, and there's no response for several minutes when I attempt to close it.

I want to go back to the version that is on the old laptop, but I can't find downloads for any previous versions. Where are they?

I have been using TB for many years, but with the latest update to version 78 I cannot connect my Google contact list as the addon I used is not longer compatible. The suggestions I have read about is to use TBSync, which I have installed, but I can't get it to connect to my Google account. Each time I try autodiscover I get a message saying it has failed. I tried to manually enter the server name, but that wouldn't work either.

I can't find any support instructions in the Add In web site or on the Mozilla support site. Can anyone help?

When I drop the .dmg into the app manager I get a message "The app is currently not available in your country or region". I'm in the UK.

Is this really a regional restriction, or an error because the version is not compatible with the Mac M1 OS?

Since updating to the 'new look' TB I have an issue with a blurry screen. When you select an Account from the left side of the screen at the top of the folders, the information is blurred as you can see from the attached screenshot.

The messages in the folders are all clearly displayed and other areas of display don't have any problems, it is only since updating to the 'new' folder look that appears to have created this blurry image.

Someone suggested that I adjust the Windows ClearType settings which I did, but that didn't make any difference and the problem still exists. I have also just updated to the new 78.1.0 version today (1st August) but I still have the same blurry problem.

Any suggections or should this be logged as a bug ?

I got a message from yahoo mail saying they will no longer support current sign in methods. They give instructions for how to update thunderbird for the new settings, which basically involves deleting the old yahoo account and setting up a new one. Following those instructions results in all of my mailboxes and messages being deleted -- what a brilliant solution! I have years of messages I don't want to lose. Fortunately I had a backup of my .thunderbird directory (this is Linux, thunderbird v. 68.11.0)

See here for how NOT to do this "upgrade": https://help.yahoo.com/kb/new-mail-for-desktop/SLN27791.html?impressions=true Don't follow those instructions or you will lose all of your messages and mailboxes.

So, is there a way I can delete and re-install the account settings using the automatic features yahoo wants, without losing everything?

Hi,

I have an old email account with the address j*****@netcabo.pt that some years was migrated to Microsoft Outlook by the Portuguese ISP. I can access this account on the webmail and on the Mail App from Windows 10, but I can’t login in Thunderbird. I’m following the server configurations that are available on https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/options/mail/accounts, namely

IMAP Server name: outlook.office365.com Port: 993 Encryption method: TLS

SMTP Server name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 Encryption method: STARTTLS

I’m choosing OAuth2 as “authentication method”. The problem is that when the Microsoft login windows appears, it doesn’t recognize the email j*****@netcabo.pt, it says it must be a wrong address and I should change it or else to contact the administrator (see the figure). I’m sending a picture in attachment. It seems a bug on the OAuth2 app.

Thanks for your help.

After upgrading Thunderbird from v68 to v78 over the weekend, everything looked fine, but then I realized some emails display badly with Windows 10 running in Dark mode. Changing the Windows settings to display apps in Light mode doesn't help (and make other parts of Windows Light instead of Dark mode).

What I'm trying to find in about:config is a flag to tell Thunderbird to run in Light mode as I can't see many of my emails. I can highlight the body, but that's just a lame workaround.

First image show how the text is unreadable because Thunderbird only changed the background layout, but not the text; Image on the right I highlighted the whole email so I could read the text.

I saw other suggestions that either require meddling with some .css file quite heavily, or installing some add-on that doesn't fix the problem.

We just need a configuration flag to prevent Thunderbird from using the Windows Dark Mode (or more generic, one that doesn't follow the Windows Light or Dark mode on us).

Thank you developers.
