Running a new iMac pro here and Thunderbird has been a disaster. I've been using it for years on my PC, and other Mac's in the past. The iMac has tons of ram and plenty of disk space. The system is otherwise idle when using Thunderbird.

The Race condition is repeatable. When it happens, I get the spinning beach ball as the program is completely hung. The only way out is to terminate the process.

Steps to repeat the condition:

1. Open an existing email 2. Hit Reply 3. Compose message 4. Hit Send, and then, quickly, 5. Choose another message to read 6. Application hang

What's happening here is that when a message is being sent, opening a new message before the sending has completed causes a race/hang condition. It is highly repeatable.

Workaround: after hitting Send, wait until it's been sent before moving on to another message.

This is getting exhausting. I've been using Thunderbird (for Mac) for years -- over a decade at least. In the last 3-6 months, Thunderbird freezes every single time I send an email and then click away from the email (anywhere) after hitting the send button and before the message has finished sending. It's extremely annoying because my habit is to hit the send button and move on to the next thing. So inadvertently I end up having to force quit thunderbird in between sending every couple emails. What's the deal and how can I fix this or do I need a new email client?

Thunderbird Hangs when filing a message or sending (IMAP) [Mac]

I'm on a Mac running High Sierra OS X with five IMAP accounts set up in Thunderbird (TB). When I connect they all download new messages & things are fine for a while. If I leave TB running for a while then try to reply to an email TB will hand trying to connect to the server. Another symptom is when I try to file a message from one account' inbox into a folder that lives on a different email account on another server. Either the connection to the target server hangs or the inbox locks up and will not let me look at any other messages. Restarting TB clears the problem but this is hardly an acceptable solution, especially if I just composed a long email and attached supporting documents. Drafts are not being saved timely when the symptoms occur so I have to cut and paste my message, restart TB then re-compose the message and send.

Computer:MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, OS: macOS High Sierra Version: 10.13.6

Thunderbird :60.6.0 (64-bit) (tried in safe mode as well)

IMAP/SMTP

On a majority of my emails after hitting send Thunderbird freezes, then I get the loading wheel indefinitely. I have to force quit the program so I am not getting any crash report when reopening. Upon launching the program the email is in the sent folder and the recipients aren't having any trouble receiving the messages.

Is there any type of other log I can access to provide more information or possible causes?

I don't have any issues with the settings I am using when on my old linux laptop or windows setups. I might try starting a new profile but I would need to salvage some of my old preferences so I'm not sure which one to leave behind so I don't transport the issue into a fresh setup. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled.

I upgraded my MacAir to a Mac PowerBook. Thunderbird started hanging on Mojave. So I upgraded to Catalina. Same problem. I get a spinning dial. I think it is stuck downloaded mail - sometimes it says "downloading 1 of 28123" messages in the lower left. I have tried running in safe mode, compacting, disabling add-ons, etc. Force quitting and starting again 'fixes' the problem.

I have a fairly large inventory of email. I have seen this kind of problem come and go over the years. Sometimes it doesn't hang but takes a long time to come back. I think it is perhaps indexing the mail. But often now it just hangs forever.

Has anyone seen this on Catalina?

Thanks.
