Since I installed Thunderbird version 102.4.0 the Address Book always opens in a second tab rather than in a separate window. I have it configured to open emails in new windows and that works, but I cannot figure out how to get the address book back into a separate window. Having it open only in a second tab is inconvenient. Any help on how to get this capability back? Thanks in advance!

Hi, using the latest version of Thunderbird on a Mac, my Virus Scanner finds several threats - trojans, apparently - in users/.../library/thunderbird/profiles/ggsyb1ga.default/Mail/pop.googlemail... . I know, they don't pose an actual threat there, and the mails have been deleted in Thunderbird itself, yet they are found in every scan which is annoying (virus scanner cannot quarantine them, yet indicates the sender, subject line and date - searching for those in Thunderbird, they are no longer there). Is there any way to delete only these (cached?) mails without deleting all my mails in Thunderbird which would probably happen if I deleted the whole profile?

v102.3.0 on Debian XFCE We recently lost ability to spell check selected text. Check Spelling still works, so long as there is no text selection. But if I first select one or more words, then press CTRL+Shift+P (or use menu Option, CheckSpelling), then the spell check dialog box displays for a small fraction of a second then disappears. Frequently, I use 'words', acronyms, abbreviations, process-names, file-names, etc., that I know will not spell check. To avoid having to click 'Ignore' repeatedly, I usually only spellcheck specific words, double-clicking the suspected misspelled word and pressing CTRL+Shift+P. This stopped working within the last few months.

My wife and I both have virginmedia.com email address in the UK and by using a browser we can receive and send emails at any time. However, whenever we are out of the UK for a period of time, after a few weeks, we are both unable to send emails although can still receive them - the error message states wrong password when attempting to send but the correct one is being used. I have spoken to the Tech guys at Virgin who stated that as we can send emails via a browser the problem rest with you and advised I contact you for assistance. I would add that we access other email accounts via Thunderbird and never have a problem. Can you suggest a solution please? Thanks

Is there a way to use known values to better indicate, tag and filter good and bad emails?

Goal: I'd like to use certain consistent behaviors to automatically filter and highlight mail. Is there a way to pre-filter email using another language (Python? Regex? etc) overtime and with history, and across multiple email accounts without building a custom plugin?

1) Track and compare source SMTP servers for each user, notify when out of pattern: - Many of my emails come from the same smtp source. Local Government/libraries, School, Work, etc. This doesn't work everywhere, however there is a pattern and it should be easy to validate when the pattern doesn't match. ex. Firefox emails come from a variant of *.amazonses.com. ex. highlight/flag any email with a name or email in my address book, where the new email has a mismatch.

2) Track and signal on key words identified in user marked spam: - I get a lot of spam with consistently re-used fake names across multiple domains, the same (or similar key word) subjects across the same name, domain or Top Level domain. ex. "Canvas Print" "My Senior Perks" and domains that end in .monster, .life, .quest, etc. I consistently see these top level domains used in spam. In a perfect world, this would include over time.

3) A way to review some of these topics so that as a message is incorrectly tagged, the user can update/enhance the matching rules to try and make it better.

Background: Having tracked/looked at spam email that I get over time and across multiple email accounts which all feed to the same Thunderbird instance, there are very large and ongoing patterns in the invalid email I receive. I looked into, and currently believe writing my own plugin to be beyond my skill set. If I could I would write my own plugin. If thunderbird had an API I could touch to pull headers, I could write something in python or other. I can't seem to find an option to allow external integration with Thunderbird, short of becoming an upstream IMAP or POP provider and I'd like to avoid having to do that given the TLS man in the middle and/or other issues this can create.

I've tried several filtering plugins, and can do filtering at runtime, but have not figured out how to track "indicators of badness" over time in any of the plugins I've seen.

Recommendations, thoughts, ideas welcome.

Thank you in advance!

I have been a Thunderbird user since approximately 2006. I am using the most up-to-date version of Thunderbird on a Dell Inspiron 2019 laptop running Windows 11. Since mid-day on Thursday, Oct. 20, whenever I try to delete an e-mail in Thunderbird, the e-mails in my Inbox begin rapidly replicating indefinitely until I close Thunderbird. The problem began without warning, and i took me some time before I determined that e-mail deletion started the occurrence of the problem. Although since I discovered the events were triggered by deletions I have tried not to delete e-mails from my Inbox, I nevertheless currently have over 72,000 e-mails in my Inbox! The operation of my computer and Thunderbird are somewhat slowed down, although not so badly as I had anticipated.

I wrote Thunderbird Support the evening of Thursday, October 20, and I received a response on Fridy, October 21. Unfortunately, I had not explained the problem very well and had not yet determined what triggered the multiple replications. Additionally, I have rarely used Thunderbird Support, and I accidentally replied that my problem had been solved when it had not. I also at the time of my originally writing had not tried reloading Thunerbird, which I did with my long-time computer support person TThursday afternoon; the problem remained unchanged.

I did try to reply again, but I believe the support person who had tried to help me initially had received my erroneous response that the problem had been solved and didn't look at it again. What follows is what I wrote in my reply last Friday, with a few edits:

"As I wrote you Friday [October 21] , the problem occurs ONLY when I delete an e-mail from my Inbox (into Trash). I have many specific sub-inboxes and it's no problem when I move e-mails from my Inbox to these boxes. Also not a problem if I move e-mails to Junk. But removing any number of e-mails using Delete starts up the replication process. This occurs no matter how long I've waited since the last thing I did. And it's many, many replications. Some of the e-mails in my Inbox have been repeated more than 10 times! Between Friday afternoon when the problem suddenly started until Saturday about 2-3 a.m. when I was able to track down what was spurring the replications, more than 15,000 e-mail replications occurred in my Inbox (a few fewer than I inaccurately reported to you on Friday). Since that time, I've been tagging everything from my normal incoming mail that will need to be deleted eventually, without deleting; and the problem has not been occurring except for a couple of times when I forgot and tried to delete an e-mail. The problem appears to be working backwards, but I haven't tried to see yet how many months back have had replications. Because the number of replications varies from e-mail to e-mail, it's a little hard to track the timeline. I should tell you that I do retain too many e-mails, so there are usually a large number in my Inbox (mostly read), but the computer is definitely over-stressed with e-mails in my Inbox right now.

If we solve the problem I don't know what I'm going to do with all the replicated e-mails. Because I haven't trusted that things were going to be OK since last November, I'm still receiving the e-mails also on my old computer (where they're not being replicated), but they haven't been read and disposed of on that computer. I did also go over my settings on my current computer after the problem started and could not find any accidental changes.

By way on intro, I have been a happy Thunderbird user since early in this century when I switched over after the demise of Netscape! I set it up myself and did the minimal troubleshooting needed myself from then until November 2021. At that point, it appeared the program became corrupted when the most recent beta update was installed. A that time I was still using my older computer running Windows 7. My computer person and I worked for days trying to fix things. Finally, we set up my recently-purchased computer with Windows 11 and reinstalled Thunderbird from scratch with the current version. That has left some lingering problems with the current beta version, but it's mostly been OK. Until the past few weeks, I never seriously considered changing to another e-mail client. I still want to be a Thunderbird user.

A few weeks ago, I had a different e-mail problem, but we were able to solve it completely with a reload. The present problem occurred out of the blue on Friday. I used Thunderbird without problem Friday morning, stopped for a Zoom telemedicine call, and then started working on my e-mail again when suddenly the problem occurred. We did an uninstall and reinstall of Thunderbird, but it didn't make any difference, as I previously stated.

One added note. I have some progressive loss of the use of my hands from a spinal cord problem; my typing has a lot of errors. I spell-check many times, use Grammarly where I can, and proofread vigilantly. However, some typos still creep through, which drive me crazy. I apologize for these errors; let me know if something doesn't make sense.

Thank you very much!

Carol Iglauer"

  • END OF QUOTED MESSAGE FROM ME TO THUNDERBIRD SUPPORT ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22.*

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide!

Sincerely,

Carol Iglauer October 28, 2022 2:00 a.m. CDT

Hello everyone!

When I first start Thunderbird, the status bar goes through all accounts and is then empty. When I select an individual account under the unified inbox, the status bar stays empty. When I then switch back to the unified inbox, it goes through the accounts again, but gets stuck on the last account showing "email.example.com: Searching folder..." in the status bar indefinitely, all the while the Activity manager is empty. It also doesn't appear that any mails would be missing. If I then use Offline -> Download/Sync now..., TB goes through all accounts again and afterwards the status bar stays empty. One switch back and forth between an individual account and the unified folder and it shows "email.example.com: Searching folder..." indefinitely again.

It seems to usually get stuck on the first email account from the top, but sometimes also a seemingly random other email account.

The issue persists within Troubleshoot mode, my current version is 102.4.1.

Does anyone know what the cause of this is?

So I have several emails accounts, most of them set up to be IMAP.

With the latest updates, Unified Folders is no longer fetching new email on startup.

Eventually emails are fetched, but for the most part, I have to click in EACH account's inbox to check if I have new email.

Very frustrating.

Is there like some new flag I have to set on each account now that nobody thought to warn users about?

Hi,

I use Thunderbird on Debian Linux 11. I'm a developer, so I'm not scared of JS files, JSON etc. ;)

I want my custom-built user workplace provisioning scripts to setup Thunderbird, as part of a larger deployment process.

My aims, to be done using Thunderbird command line parameters or by file modification operations in file system: 0) Initial cleanup: rm -r ~/.thunderbird 1) Setup a new empty profile 2) Create an IMAP account: User's email address, user's name, IMAP server host, IMAP server port, IMAP server username, IMAP server password, always TLS 3) Create default SMTP entry: User's email address, user's name, SMTP server host, SMTP server port, SMTP server username, SMTP server password, always TLS 4) Delete device-local default Lightning calendar 5) Use CalDAV calendar on Internet server: CalDAV URL, username, password

Step 0 is easy. :D

Can you give some advice how to get steps 1 - 5 done?

Is there maybe a ready to use tool for provisioning / bootstrapping Thunderbird? Or an addon?

If I have to do it myself: Concerning steps 2/3: I guess the first step is modifying the "prefs.js". For example, for SMTP, I can write properties like

user_pref("mail.smtp.defaultserver", "smtp1"); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.authMethod", 4); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.clientid", "...UUID..."); // What is this UUID used for?? user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.description", "some description"); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.hostname", "smtp.server.local"); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.port", 465); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.try_ssl", 3); user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.username", "user@server.local");

But how and where to store the password? (Same problem for IMAP.)

Thanks a lot! Sebastian

Up until about an hour ago, Thunderbird's been working fine. Now, all of a sudden I can no longer send emails.

When I hit "send" I get prompted for my gmail account (up until this last time, it didn't even have the correct email address pre-filled). Then I get prompted for my password. Then I am asked whether to deny or allow Thunderbird to access my gmail account. After I click "allow," TB sits there, pretending to send the email for a few minutes, then pops up with "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com timed out. Try again." I click "okay" and then I try to send the email again. After all, I'm already signed in, so it's just a matter of a bad connection, right? Wrong. I have to go through the whole sign-in thing again, including allowing Thunderbird to access my email account.

I have changed no settings in Thunderbird (or Windows, for that matter) since the last time I successfully sent an email, until I started trying to troubleshoot this problem. So why is Thunderbird all of a sudden unable to send outgoing mail via gmail? In case you're wondering, I can access my inbox just fine. Only outgoing emails are not working.

If I seem to be a bit sarcastic, I apologize. I've wasted over an HOUR trying to figure out why I can't send an email to my mother, and I'm extremely frustrated and about ready to quit using email altogether.

Hi,

I think it's started happening in one of the latest release.

I have a few email rules for incoming mails. Emails are moved to folders with option: "mark as read".

In the past, that icon never showed up for those emails. Now every time mails are moved and marked "read" that icon pops up. I never now whether it is something new that doesn't follow any rule or something under the rules and have to click folders to make it disappear.

Thank for help in advance
