I have several email accounts that I have associated to a unified inbox via IMAP. For some time, I have sensed emails go missing. This morning it happened in front of my eyes, so I was able to investigate. I had an email come in. It showed up in the unified inbox. I opened it and replied. I was reading the next email and noticed the one I had just replied to sudden disappeared out of the unified inbox.
I searched for the subject, it was still "somewhere" and reported to be in "Inbox" Turns out it was in the "subfolder" under unified inbox relating to the account it came in to. Shouldn't all emails in the inboxes for my various accounts be reflected in the top-level, unified inbox? It is very confusing.
incoming mail is fine. subject line and TO are fine but SEND is in grey. Running Win 10.

When I receive a message with a video file attached Thunderbird 91.1.1 will ask me for the application to open it with. I select the application I want to use and tick the box always use that application. If I get another message(s) with the same type of attachment Thunderbird will ask me again to choose the application even though I said to always use the same one I picked earlier. If I check in general preferences of Thunderbird it shows the application I have chosen as the default for the file type.

I am using Thunderbird 78.11.0 on an Ubuntu LTS 20 OS. THANK YOU for putting Open Auth 2 into Thunderbird! About six months ago, I had to resort to using a secure email key with Yahoo email products when they tightened their security protocols. I very recently got abruptly switched to OAuth2 for all my IMAP email accounts. Except Microsoft, of course - outlook mail is still in the dark ages security-wise I guess.
With Thunderbird, I want to send text with mixed formatting. Usually I use the "variable width" text as a default, and I have no problems with that. The problem arises when I want to place a fixed-width table in the middle of my text. I select the text, convert that to "fixed width" text, and it looks fine when I send it. HOWEVER, I get a bunch of escape characters showing up in the FW text, making it unreadable to most.
Samples of what I want to send and what I end up sending are attached as images. The earlier screenshot is the good-looking one; the one two minutes later is what I end up sending and I look like a fool...!
Hope you can help. /Andrew Nordquist, freetron@pacbell.net, joatphysicist@yahoo.com

I have no idea why I have Thunderbird right now as I’m no longer informed I have mail unless I physically walk to my computer, open Thunderbird and click on Get Messages.
By default, Thunderbird should check my mail server(s) for new messages on application startup and then, as set up, do it automatically. I’ve been with Thunderbird for years and never ever had a problem with this. In fact I’ve never had any problems at all until approx. 3 months ago. It started happening on the previous version, hence the reason I downloaded the new version 91.1.2. – but sadly I still have the problem.
It doesn’t check to find new mail. [If I click on bottom right of taskbar – Windows Notifications – I can see my emails in the list]. The only way I see if I have mail is if I search for them. So for example, an email could arrive at say 10am (Windows notifications has the info) but it isn’t until I check it manually that it appears in the inbox.
When I open Thunderbird it no longer searches for messages. I will get mail if I manually click on the ‘Get Messages’ box (click on both of my email addresses separately) and if I click on ‘Get All New Messages’. But sadly although it is set up (and has been for years) to ‘automatically get all messages’, this no longer works. So: 1. I open Thunderbird, no mail appears. It doesn’t search for mail 2. If I click on my two different email accounts then the mail will arrive 3. If I click on ‘Get Messages’ both sets of mail will arrive 4. If I use ShiftF5 sometimes it will search for mail, but not always
How am I supposed to know if I have mail? It’s been ‘forwarding to Gmail’ now for a few years so I could always check my phone, but unless I manually download the messages to my inbox they won’t appear on my phone. So now I can sit all day, no notifications to my phone, but when I go through to my computer I can see them on Windows Notification but the 'process of looking for messages/mail' has not happened. So once again I do it manually, then I see my mail, my phone sees my mail, Gmail sees my mail. Obviously it can't carry on like this.
I’ve checked the details of both of my accounts and all is correct. Server info (Manage Identities) states ‘my first account will be the default’ and that is correct. My first email address is also underlined. Account Actions also has the correct account as default.
Both (POP) accounts have the same items checked:
1. Check for messages at startup 2. Check for new messages every 10 mins. (I have altered that to 5, but makes no difference) 3. Automatically download new messages
I’ve even swopped them over (Account Actions) so the 2nd account is the 1st (the default) and still nothing works.
I note that this problem has been around for a few years with many frustrated people waiting for something to be done to put the matter right. Please can someone out there let us know when this horrid situation will be fixed? I'm an elderly lady (computer literate) and I love Thunderbird and appreciate what the guys do to keep it going - but right now I just don't know what to do anymore. Being locked in for months due to Covid my email has been my lifeline - please someone out there help. Thank you.

Hello, I've tried various times to delete attachments from various emails in my gmail from Thunderbird. It deletes the attachment and it looks good. I then give it several hours to sync to gmail. But later, the email comes back in Thunderbird with the attachment and nothing changes. It does not save any space in gmail. I've also tried waiting several days. When I check gmail the email is still there with the attachment.
I have tried different gmail accounts, and also tried the "detach" and the "delete" function. Both do not sync into my gmail.

Anyway, I use Maiwasher Pro to screen messages before I open TBird. The setup in both is IMAP. However, since this new installation I find any new message is immediately downloading into TBird before I click the "Get Messages" button. In my server settings the 3 sections under "Server Settings" - check, etc are all unticked. I have been in touch with the Mailwasher support team in case the problem lies there, but the agent who replied coincidentally also uses TBird and has the same setup as me in TBird but no similar problem.
I would be grateful for any advice which will prevent the new messages from immediately downloading. Clearly it serves no purpose me having Mailwasher if the emails just download into TBird without me first being able to scrutinise them.

I have found many posts from users the same issue as mine,
I have several users on a LAN sharing EMAIL "accounts" by pointing the Thunderbird account to a shared drive. However, They cannot share address books unless they export, manually merge, import and merge again...
There is an add-on that helps, but does not provide true syncing with multiple users. Support for defining the location of address books on a shared drive was abandoned by Thunderbird's development community some time ago, but resurrecting it could support this small business community. LDAP is just too complex and expensive for us.

I'm yet again looking for an email client that works well, so I'm evaluating Thunderbird again. I'm really liking the ability to move messages to recent folders. My only two complaints there are that there should be many more folders in that list and it would be nice if the list were not cluttered with any folder available on the left panel without drilling down and that folders in the Favorites menu should not be included in the Recent menu.
However, that is now why I'm writing this post. My question today is about quote bars. Looking online, I found http://kb.mozillazine.org/Quote_bars which seems to indicate that quote bars are on by default. However, I only ever get the old-style > quotes. I have, of course, customized my setup a little and I can't say exactly what I have done because it has been over time. However, the main change I have made is to change from HTML composing and display to plain text composing and display wherever I can. Does that disable the quote bars? Can I get them back without going back to HTML display?
Thanks, John

I have TB 91.1.2 on Windows 10 64-bit.
When I open an email with an attachment, and click on the attachment, TB always pops up a window asking me what to do with the file. Even if I have previously opened this type of file, and have chosen an application, and checked the box that says "Do this automatically for files like this from now on", it still asks me every time.
It does this for every file type except .pdf, which are opened in TB. For all other file types, I get the pop-up every time, even if I've previously checked the box.
What's the point of the checkbox if it ignores it? Is there a way to get it to open files without asking? I'm sure it never used to do this.
Thanks
