Thunderbird can't seem to remember who I am! For the past year or so, every few weeks, I open Thunderbird to find that it doesn't know who I am. My entire account has seemingly disappeared! The first time this happened, I nearly lost it. I thought everything was gone. After doing some research, I discovered the likely problem was that the prefs.js file in my profile folder was corrupted. Going back to a backup (thank goodness for backups!) and copying an older version of prefs.js to replace the corrupted one fixed the problem - all my emails and folders were back as they were before. Whew! Until it happened again. And again, and again, and again, etc., etc.

Since this is a well known problem (I found the "fix" noted above in Mozilla help), I assumed at some point there would be a permanent fix. But several iterations of Thunderbird have come and gone since then and the problem remains. I have used Thunderbird for nearly 20 years, and have loved it. But if I don't find a solution for this problem, I may have to abandon the platform. I can't afford to have my email client forget me every few weeks. Resetting the prefs.js file takes time, and alarmingly it doesn't always work! A few times I found my backup prefs.js also failed and had to rely on an even older backup which can sometimes be problematic if I changed any settings in the interval in between. I REALLY hope someone has found a more permanent solution to this issue! If you have, please post it and let us know where to find the cure for Thunderbirdheimer's!!

In Account Settings>Copies & Folders>Message Archives, I changed the first setting from "Other" to "Archives" folder. The reason for the change is that under "Other" when I send an email, not only is a copy saved in my sent folder but a bold copy is in my trash.

My problem is when I next bootup the computer, the setting reverts to "Other".

How can I make the setting change stick. Changes made in other areas do hold.

I'm aware this has been discussed and fixes suggested, but they don't work for me so...

1. What is the difference between normal startup and troubleshoot mode? I've already turned off any extensions I can find in both Thunderbird and Firefox, but there must be something else affected.

2. What is the connection between Thunderbird and Firefox? When I choose one of the debug options in Thunderbird I get connected to debugging in Firefox, not Thunderbird (bad link?).

Thank you in advance for your response to these questions. I'm hoping to be able to troubleshoot on my own since previous solutions don't appear to apply.

My TB was working properly this morning. When I tried to use it in the PM it failed. Now; when I log in to TB, the start page flickers on the screen for a fraction of a second, then another program screen takes its place and cannot be changed. No way I could find to get to another screen or back to the start page. The only option is to exit the program, or use the screen that came up, if that's the one you actually wanted, pure luck. The screens that came up included input, calendar, and scam. I downloaded and reinstalled TB, re booted computer, no change. Need help very much. Thanks in advance. Sherm Problem went a way with no help from me. Maybe I was the problem. Regards, Sherm

I've just installed Thunderbird - which I have been using for years on my desktop and laptop - on my wife's laptop. No matter what I try, I cannot locate the inbox. I'm instructed to right-click on the account name in the folders panel, but the account name isn't there. I'm offered only Mail, Address Book, Tasks and Chat. Right-clicking on the Mail option offers Open In New Tab, Open In New Window and Switch To. I can write and send an email, choosing either of two accounts, but I can't seen incoming/received ones. I have a feeling that I'm going to be embarrassed by the answer, but I'm stumped.

Hi:

I'm a longtime ubuntu (lubuntu, actually) user, and upgrading LTS versions every 2 years has been pretty easy til now: all I had to do was copy my .thunderbird folder to the home directory of the new system.

When I do that now for the pre-release version of lubuntu 24.04,, the new Thunderbird requires setting up the new profile from scratch, which is a pain, since I use T-bird for multiple accounts.

Is there an easier way of migrating my emails from my old profile to the new system?

Thanks!

Bill

My Thunderbird email app quit receiving new messages 6/13/2023 and I've had to use a different way to get emails on my laptop (note that it works fine on my pc) I finally got around to searching for answers and noticed a Mozilla Support thread that mentioned if the Connection Security is turned to NONE then messages are received. This worked for me too, but it doesn't feel safe to keep the security turned off. What can I do?

I have been using Thunderbird for a year. It is ok, but some problems are borderline un-tolerable. I have ~3500 emails in my IMAP account. I would like to keep more for a deeper search, but ok - I could handle that. And once in a while, about every month, I am doing something and the Thunderbird decides to re-download all my messages. And it locks me out of all emails for about 2 hours while this process is ongoing. I cannot open emails, I cannot answer - nothing.

I have no "cleaning" software, I do not mess up with the database file.

Is there a way to avoid this re-download? If not, is it possible to avoid the lock-out, to get emails usable while it does it - for example, download the most recent emails first and make them visible at least?
