I am using the latest version of Thunderbird 78.3.2 (32 bit) as well as the latest Firefox 81.0.1 (64 bit). My email has gotten so slow when downloading from the server as well as trying to open each individual email which can take 30-45 seconds to open. I also get the annoying spinning circle as well as it say that "Mozilla Thunderbird - Not Responding" - so frustrating. I get far too many emails a day to continue with this madness and trying to "search" for a solution to "read about" on-line and hope it works? A friend of mine who seems to know about computers suggests it is an "index thing", but I can't seem to find a fix? HELP ME PLEASE~!

Is there anyone at Mozila Thunderbird who can call me or who I can call to sort this out. I have been using this email system for many years. I have been using it on this laptop for over a year without any problems. Today I used it to send and receive emails ok, but just one hour ago it stopped working for no apparent reason. I can still send and receive emails on my andriod phone but not on my laptop, I keep getting the error message Login to Account "my email@gmail.com" failed and Login to server imap.googlemail.com with username myusername@gmail.com failed.

When sending emails out I get error message Login to server smtp.googlemail.com with username musername@gmail.com failed. and it asks me to Retry or Enter New Password or Cancel. I tried entering the password but to no avail. If I then click on "Cancel" I get the following error message "Sending of the message failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.googlemail.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."

I've searched the community and knowledge base, and I am not seeing a solution that works. The video listed below shows the issue but here's a recap: An event I accepted an invite to just completed. The notification popped up before the event as hoped for, but could not be dismissed. It continues to repeat about every 20 to 30 minutes.

Clicking dismiss does nothing. Clicking dismiss all does nothing. https://www.screencast.com/t/NAPTzvp9kOoh

Any help is appreciated.

I have NO idea what is going on:

  • Just clicking on folders = MASSIVE LAG/HANG/FREEZE.
  • Just clicking a menu icon = MASSIVE LAG/HANG/FREEZE.
  • Just clicking one email icon = MASSIVE LAG/HANG/FREEZE.
  • Just trying to open an email = MASSIVE LAG/HANG/FREEZE.
  • Trying to do ANYTHING = MASSIVE LAG/HANG/FREEZE.

It does not start to happen immediately when program starts, sometimes 1 minute after, sometimes more. I cant point out a reason or action that leads to this behavior. If I restart the program, the problem persists. If I reboot the system, its gone.

Its the only program in my system having this behavior. Examples of what I work daily with: MS Office programs, Adobe programs, Oracle VM, Visual Studio, Blender and Unity.

I read diagonally something about Windows Defender, how to proceed with that? How to disable ONLY for Thunderbird? It's an interface problem, why should that work? Is this something else, memory leak, anything?

I love Thunderbird, using it for YEARS! I don't want to change, please help, I got loads of work to deliver! :(

EDIT: Found the edit Question on the right side of the screen (not bellow the post as expected), rearranged the text, and rewrote details so not to be confused with "internet lag".

Hi,

I am trying to find answer for a long time problem (1 year). OS is Win 7 Tbird 68.8.1 32 bit

When I select a folder in the Left hand navigation pane, Thunderbird will often be sluggish to respond (3 -10 secs), but frequently during the day it is worse than this, as I will see the notice in the Title Bar "Thunderbird Not Responding" and now I will have to wait 3-5 minutes before Thunderbird is usable again.

Example: -- in the Left pane the Sent folder in Mail Acct 1 is selected. -- Then I click on the Inbox in Mail Acct 2 -- Thunderbird will often hang, as described above

I have checked Windows Task Manager during this time and do not see any excessive CPU usage by any application, including Thunderbird.

I have found only one such similar report in this forum from a User, but there is no real "answer" to the problem ... only a suggestion to start Tbird in Safe mode and see if problem persists.

I do not have any installed extensions, 3rd party apps, etc. Just plain vanilla Tbird.

Thank you ! rp108

After an extraordinary amount of testing, I can conclude that Thunderbird is placing linebreaks inappropriately in emails sent from Thunderbird.

In other forum posts, I saw these described as "soft" line breaks that email clients could ignore, but in my testing, Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook/Office 365 all display these false line breaks (in both webmail and mobile apps). In fact, the only email clients that did not display these false line breaks were Outlook 2016 (Windows 10) and Thunderbird (Windows/macOS).

The issue is that Thunderbird is inserting these line breaks where the line changes in the view of the composer. This is an arbitrary line that really serves no obvious purpose, given the thousands of possible variations in screen sizes on mobile or desktop?

Toggling between sending in HTML or plain text seems to not have an impact in resolving this issue, and neither does switching between "Paragraph" or "Body Text" modes.

Example images are attached of how this looks.

Any hope for a resolution on this issue? (via Extension or correction by the developers?)

For two days, I have been trying everything I can after reading these boards to get past this error message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responsive. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window"

I backed up my data on an old computer yesterday, but before I could even get it to the new computer, had issues with opening Thunderbird on the old computer again. I always get the message above.

Tried installing the backup on the new computer - and now am getting the message over there.

I have tried so many of the suggestions in these Thunderbird threads. I am at my wits end.

I have tried to start in safe mode on both computers, run the exe file manually, compare the profiles.ini file to prior backups (it is the same), look for lock files (there are none I have found), used the Profile Manager utility to install on new computer without success....

One thing that comes to mind for me next... 1) I have a copy of a backup from June 5, 2020 that was successfully used to install on the (now) old computer. If I thought that I could do a fresh install of Windows on the new computer and have that June 5th copy install properly - at this point I would do without 20 days of e-mail.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can give!

Here is the error message:

Error message; An error occurred while sending mail: Unable to establish a secure link with Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp-mail.outlook.com using STARTTLS since it doesn't advertise that feature. Switch off STARTTLS for that server or contact your service provider.'

I posted the same issue a few weeks ago but it seems to keep happening.

Receiving email seems to be OK.

Any advice welcomed!

[I know this should be easy: Just give Comcast support the error code and ask what it means. Many hours later, (no one - of 5 agents! - had any idea, or much cared about a broken URL link found when trying to search the problem on their website), I'm hoping someone here may have a clue.]

My comcast.net account (IMAP) used to work, on both TB and Apple Mail app on my phone. Now TB says: "Alert from account ...: 1014". (See pic.)

So I checked my phone. It also could not login, initially saying "no password". I checked; password was still there, but I re-entered it anyway and tried again. New error message: "The IMAP server imap.comcast.net does not support Password authentication. Please check your account settings and try again." (See pic.)

I have updated TB since last access to that account, but all other accounts work, and Apple Mail also has a problem (though different message) with this problem account, so logic says look to Comcast for an answer. But before I spend hours more trying to find a spark of intelligence at Comcast, does anyone know: (a) How TB gets the error code 1014? (It must be from the mail server, right?) (b) Is there a database of imap login error codes?

Since today I can't access my Yahoo IMAP and SMTP servers, neither with TB 78.4.0 nor TB 68.12.1. The access to Yahoo's POP3 servers is possible as I have still one Yahoo e-mail account which uses POP3 server.

Yahoo had announced that they will restrict the access to their e-mail servers for "outdated Apps", but to Thunderbird this restriction should not apply.

Things I've done so far:

  • allowed cookies in "Privacy & Security" (was already set)
  • deleted all old passwords
  • tried to change authentication method to OAuth2 both on IMAP and SMTP servers, worked for the IMAP servers only

The following errors occur:

  • TB just says "Couldn't connect to server imap.mail.yahoo.com", and that's it. No "Enter password for server XYZ" dialog is shown
  • I can't change the authentication method for SMTP servers to "OAuth2", the option is not shown in the drop down list
  • since one of my Yahoo e-mail accounts (which is accessable via POP3) is working with TB, I've tried to access my other Yahoo accounts via POP3 servers instead of IMAP servers, but failed

I would be grateful for any help and ideas.

The problem and solution: (For anyone who needs this info). Two days ago TB did and update. After the update TB stopped downloading email from all accounts IMAP & POP on multiple email servers (Gmail, Cox, Mailfence, Proton and so on) but I could still send emails. You could see the bottom bar say connecting but nothing would happen. No error message or anything, just no download. I tried all the suggestions listed in the TB 78 FAQ page and only one worked.

I use ESET. It also did an update around the same time TB did it turned out. The last suggestion I found to fix this was to turn off SSL/TLS in ESET then restart it. I turned off the SSL/TLS saved it then turned it back on. As soon as I did that it fixed the problem. So the problem was ESET. The root certificate was not properly imported during the installation of the update.

I hope this might help others.

Thunderbird Version: 68.10.0 OS: Windows 10 ver 2004, OS Build 19041.331

Problem: Upon opening Thunderbird, all folders in two different accounts, are empty. The emails still exist. I can right click on each folder, select Properties/Repair Folder, and the emails will be reloaded. But if I leave that folder, then come back, it is empty again. I also tried deleting from my profile all .msf files from every account and folder and letting Thunderbird rebuild them. When reopening Thunderbird, the emails will show up, but if I close, then reopen TB, they are gone again. I have not yet tried saving my profile, uninstalling TB, then reinstalling. I'd like to hear any other suggestions before I try that. This problem started shortly after TB updated to ver 68.10.0, but I can't say for sure that the update and the problem are correlated...it may just be coincidence.

Thank you.

I just upgraded to 78.3.2, and the message list panel now has significantly more spacing, less denstiy. There is more whitespace between lines. And there does not appear to be any option to reset this back to the previous compact view?

EDIT: Adding a note about an additional issue with the message list panel that is discussed in this thread... Prior to v78.3.2, a message/line in the message list pane would not become highlighted until I *clicked* on it. Now, whenever I just pass my mouse over the list, the message under the mouse becomes highlighted (and the last message(s) *selected* also remains highlighted). This results in two or more non-adjacent messages being highlighted in the same way at the same time. This is a poor usability experience and dangerous design that has caused me to perform operations on unintended messages multiple times, even nearly accidentally deleting messages. This usability degradation creates a risk of data loss.

KEYWORDS: message thread pane, message list panel, UX, UI design, usability, accessibility

I've been using Thunderbird for years, but today when I started it, I got a predominantly blank screen. I finally uninstalled it, downloaded the latest version, and reinstalled it. I still get a more-or-less blank screen as shown.

If I click File > Get new messages for... it shows the accounts I have set up with Thunderbird, but clicking on "All accounts" or any individual account does nothing.

I had my Profile and my emails stored in folders other than the default ones, so I thought clicking on Tools > Options or Tools > Account settings would allow me to specify those folders, but once again nothing happens when I click the links.

Yet I get popups saying that I've received new mail, but it doesn't show up.

I've tried running Thunderbird in Safe Mode but this doesn't help.

What's wrong and how can I fix it?

I had specified that jpg files be opened by PIcasa Photo Viewer and all had been working well for years -- this new behavior started a few months ago. All other file types open as expected, e.g. csv is opened by Excel, pdf by Reader, ...No matter what setting I use for associating with jpg files, clicking on the attachment just stores them in my appData/Local/TEMP directory, and Picasa doesn't open the file tho it updates the contents of that folder.

I first tried all the different options for jpg file types, including save file, Use Default, Always Ask, choosing another program to open jpg's, ... and all did the same thing. I then deleted the associated JPG option for incoming attachments and tried again to open it, but it still just copies the jpg to the TEMP dir, and I don't get prompted for anything. Same behavior for all when using SAFE mode too.

[Note in the attached image I show the choices for JPEG, not JPG, because I just deleted the JPG action and it won't come back. Anyhow I've tried every combination, including the bottom part about where to save files to as well as the drop down list]

I'm on Win 10 x64 using TB 68.10.0 (32 bit)

Any ideas?
