I keep getting this error message when trying to send emails through one of my Gmail accounts in Thunderbird: "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again." I tried the steps online in the support article at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages. All my settings are correct, but my emails will not send all of a sudden. I tried switching the port to 587, but still got the same message.

I'm sending a screenshot of my server settings. Hi,

i am currently using Thunderbird Version 68.11.0 - haven't had any problems - so far. Then all of a sudden it starts not working. I have not changed any settings whatsoever.

This message pops up: Your message was sent but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (Sent) due to network or file access errors. You can retry or save the message locally to Local Folders/Sent It is a problem occurring only with our company's mail provider. The thing is it work just fine know it seems i can't even get any messages.

This is kind of urgent because i cannot work like this.

Please if you could help with any suggestions. Thanks a lot.

How do I change the IMAP connection timeout?

System Info: Thunderbird Version 68.6.0 (32 bit) running on Windows 10 Pro Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.719). 48GB of RAM 561GB of disk space remaining on system partition where Thunderbird and data files are installed.

I'm trying to move 5000+ email messages from a local folder to an IMAP service. Managing the potential risk of losing messages, I decided I would copy the emails from the local folder to a new folder on the destination IMAP email account.

At first, I tried Apple iCloud. Based on my second experience (see below), it appears Apple iCloud server side has a very very short timeout value. I get to around 10-11 messages and then Thunderbird reports back that the connection timed out.

Next, I tried Microsoft Outlook Live (or hotmail.com). I always get to around 227 email messages before the copy operation also times out. Researching the issue a little more, I find that timeouts normally occur when copying large messages. Microsoft's IMAP migration tips also indicate that the largest email message they will happily accept is 35Mb. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mailbox-migration/migrating-imap-mailboxes/migrating-imap-mailboxes

So I sort my local folder by size and noticing that Thunderbird is reporting the largest email message I have is 27Mb, I started experimenting by copying a single large email message first. This single email message copy operation timed out.

Once upon a time in a very early iteration of Thunderbird, the IMAP connection timeout was configurable. See https://www.ecenica.com/support/answer/how-to-fix-connection-to-server-timeout-error-in-thunderbird/

After a few minutes, I also notice that the single large email message eventually makes its way to Outlook Live because I can eventually see the email message and even download the large attachments from it. This would suggest that Outlook Live is not timing me out as the server is still taking in the large email message. Instead, Thunderbird is timing me out.

Is there a way for me to get to this setting in the current version of Thunderbird?

I'm trying to help someone out with their Thunderbird install. The problem started with 4 out of 5 of his accounts were working on Thunderbird, but a 2nd Gmail account gave message incoming server already exists. We had him rename that account - still same error. He uninstalled and reinstalled a newer version of Thunderbird - still same error. Then we went nuclear and had him uninstall Thunderbird, then delete his Thunderbird profile after verifying he was on IMAP and that he would lose no data.

Ever since then, now he gets "incoming server already exists" no matter which e-mail account he tries to add. We had him uninstall and delete all Thunderbird folders. Same problem. We had him try Thunderbird 38, 45, and the latest version of Thunderbird. Same problem. He calls us "mate," so we think he is in UK, Australia or NZ, so we always sent him official Thunderbird ftp links that let him pick by country. Suspecting that he might be doing something wrong in deleting the profile or adding accounts, we had him create a new Windows user account to be sure. In the new user account, he gets the same problem. Very perplexing.

So, at this point, I would think the problem is not tied to his Thunderbird user profile or his Windows profile. He has no problem accessing any of his e-mail accounts via webmail. I should mention at this point that he is using a decrepit Windows XP machine. Suspecting that he could be having a problem with e-mail accounts in general, or with having Thunderbird set as default mail reader, we had him change his default to Outlook Express and set up a couple of accounts using Outlook Express, and he had no issues in Outlook Express. We returned to Thunderbird, and he got the same error.

I've never had to resort to registry edits involving Thunderbird, but we are at a loss.

Any advice/suggestions welcome.

Edit: I should also mention that he says that when he tries to add an e-mail account, it stays stuck on "Checking password" for about an hour before it produces the "incoming server already exists" message.

Suddenly thunderbird won't access emails. Address is sbcglobal.net, which arrives through yahoo. "Get messages" button gives me the following: "sending of password for user (my email address) did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: server error - Please try again later".

For outbound mail get message: "login to server smtp.att.yahoo.com with username (xxxx@sbcglobal.net failed" with the option of entering a new password.

I'm using the correct password, and am able to access my email directly from yahoo with that password.

Thunderbird updated to version 78.5 just before the problem started. I deleted 78.5 but could not figure out how to install the previously working version, 78.4.3, so added 78.5 back again.

I read that there can be a problem if the provider doesn't use TLS 1.2. As far as I can tell, that shouldn't be the problem with yahoo.

I suspect possible problem with free version of avast, but I have been using this for several years with no problem.

Incoming server setting is pop.att.yahoo.com, port 995 Outgoing is smtp.att.yahoo.com port 465

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-yahoo#w_my-sign-in-attempt-was-prevented tells me to set security to "Oauth2", but that is not an option in the settings menu.

Any suggestions appreciated! Thank you.

I am running Thunderbird 68.2.2. When ever I start up Thunderbird I get this message: Unable to connect to IMAP server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cached connections.

I've tried various fixes including changing the maximum amount of server connections to cache and testing my antivirus email scanner by disabling it. Nothing has solved my problem.

Note that after Thunderbird loads in and above error message shows, I can then access my email by clicking on it's inbox folder.

Could this possibly be a bug with Thunderbird?

Thanks.

My Thunderbird updated today, and suddenly all of my emails are showing white text on black backgrounds, except for those incoming emails that have their own color schemes. In those cases, the text appears pretty dark against the black background. Changing themes doesn't seem to make a difference. Was there something in the update that made this happen? How do I fix it?

For a month now one of my 5 email addresses, which formerly worked just dandy, returns this message, upon opening Thunderbird: "Sending of password for user (my email address)@att.net did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: Server error - Please try again later." I've checked both Tools/account settings, and Tools/options, and also checked my (hidden) passwords for all 5 accounts. I can't find anything DIFFERENT on the one that doesn't work. When I try SENDING a message from this same problematic email account, I get this message: "An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Request failed; Mailbox unavailable. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again." I've tried running in SAFE mode, but that does not solve the problem.

Hmmmm. . .

Is there anyone at Mozila Thunderbird who can call me or who I can call to sort this out. I have been using this email system for many years. I have been using it on this laptop for over a year without any problems. Today I used it to send and receive emails ok, but just one hour ago it stopped working for no apparent reason. I can still send and receive emails on my andriod phone but not on my laptop, I keep getting the error message Login to Account "my email@gmail.com" failed and Login to server imap.googlemail.com with username myusername@gmail.com failed.

When sending emails out I get error message Login to server smtp.googlemail.com with username musername@gmail.com failed. and it asks me to Retry or Enter New Password or Cancel. I tried entering the password but to no avail. If I then click on "Cancel" I get the following error message "Sending of the message failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. I have seen this problem posted several times without a solution and having fixed it, I am making the effort to let all know the answer.

Here is the error / problem: "The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server pop-server.woh.rr.com responded: no such message."

I had this happen some time ago on another pop on RR mail server and logging in via Web Mail and deleting the emails worked BUT.. It happened again on another pop account and it did not work.. So... I nuked the pop via the master account and re-added it.. nothing so, I ran check disk thinking a FAT corruption NOPE, I restored a MOZBACK of Thunderbird from like a month ago Ziltch.. I called useless RR support and nothing!

FINALLY *Scratching Head*.. In there change your Junk mail options to "delete the email". I had one junk email stuck in there and after refreshing that page..That one Junk Email was gone and THEN Thunderbird worked checking that pop..

WAHLAH!

I hate when the simplest of things do not work and it pissed me off nobody had the answer.. HERE YOU ALL GO!
