I'm moving from a WinXP computer to a new Win7 machine. Should I first switch from Outlook Express to Thunderbird on the old machine (and what's the procedure?) and them migrate to the new one, or set up Thunderbird on the new one and export the Outlook Express data from the old machine? Thanks.

I have a .pst file on my PC exported from Outlook containing all my addresses. How to import into Thunderbird??
I tried earlier to import Outlook Addressen into Thunderbird Addressbook but that did not work prompting:
Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fullfil the messaging request. Outlook was at that point in time my defauls mail client.
I hope I made myself understood

I am trying to import .eml files that I have in storage folders in WLM into Thunderbird. From the help section on Thunderbird:
Importing Windows Mail (.eml files) into Thunderbird is enabled by the third-party add-on ImportExport Tools. Download and install this add-on to transfer messages from Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird.
However, ImportExport Tools is an .xpi file and my computer (Windows 7) cannot open it. Although I found a program online that convert it into something readable, my virus software identified the program as malware. Does anyone know a way to safely convert an .xpi file into something Windows can recognize and execute?
Or, is there some other way to get this add-on to run?

I am using Eudora 7 to handle 6 email accounts on a Windows XP SP3 machine. I want to install Thunderbird on the same machine and import the email addresses. I have Eudora setup to store the data files for each email address in a different data directory. This allows me to have a different icon on the desktop for each email account. Clicking on an icon starts Eudora with the email address data stored in a specific directory.
What I don't know is how to have Thunderbird import the different email addresses from Eudora to Thunderbird and how to keep the individual email address data separate in Thunderbird.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I downloaded Thunderbird Portable for Android onto my Samsung Tablet successfully. However, when I go to the Downloads folder and tap the exe file I get a message which says: "Unable to find a program to install this app". I have already allowed installation from unknown sources under the security setting, so that isn't the problem.
Can anyone help please? Many thanks.

Own 4 machines (2x win7 with serversetting POP, 2x win8.1 with serversetting IMAP). All machines have Thunderbird version 31.0 (dutch) installed. The IMAP machines will erase downloaded messages from the server. Unfortunatley I cannot find the setting to leave these messages on the server. Now when I use the win7 machines with POP setting (after the one of the other Win machines with IMAP setting were used) the messages will not appear anmore. On the machines using POP on the server settings screen this option for leaving the messages on the server is clearly shown (and active), wereas on the others it is not shown at all. Please clearify.

Hi, i am using version 31.6.0 of Thunderbird on Linux Mint 17.1. I've searched everywhere and tried all different configurations I found. Nothing seems to work. I get errors similar to "Login to server outlook.office365.com" failed (and no it is not a password issue). I suspect it has to do with exactly what server it's hitting (tried many different recommended ones). It works using firefox outlook web access. Anyone have a solution before I give up ? ps- here is a sample of my current settings :
Account name: myname@mycompany.com Name: my name e-mail : myname@mycompany.com IMAP Server name: outlook.office365.com port 993 (also tried defaults for pop, etc) User Name: myname@mycompany.com (pretty sure I also tried My name) Connection security : (SSL/TLS (also tried others) Auth method: Normal (tried others)

Decided to stick my hotmail and gmail accounts onto thunderbird as well as my work. All work fine apart from gmail. Basically it will not recognise my username or password.
"Configuration could not be verified - Is the username or password wrong?"
Deff not. I have signed in and also changed the password specifically because of this error. Both are in working order. I have rechecked...........waited 30 mins and tried again....... closed and reloaded Thunderbird.........rebooted the computer.
Not sure what the issue is so any help would be appreciated.

I'm wanting to update my thunderbird adsdress book on my travel computer which I haven't used for a year with new addresses that have accumulated on my main computer during this past year. or if need be replace the travel computer address book with my main computer's address book, whatever works. Have windows 7. IOW I am not migrating to a new computer, and I don't want to just replace everything on the travel computer with new files, just want the address book there. It is ok, if it is a separate address book from what is already there, though it may be good to delete the old address book.

I've been reading for two days now but still no solution. Background, have been wanting to try a linux desktop for some time. WinXP going away provided the opportunity. Recently installed Mint 16 Cinnamon on an IBM Thinkpad x41 laptop (overwriting WinXP) with no problems. System connected to the internet fine via Firefox. Also Mint performed all updates as expected.
Next moved on to configuring e-mail using Thunderbird. Entered account info and TB found servers and settings (below) for that particular e-mail address (which I have verified on many sites as being the correct settings):
Incoming IMAP Server:imap-mail.outlook.com Port: 993 SSL: SSL/TLS Authentication: Normal Password
Outgoing: smtp Server:smtp-mail.outlook.com Port: 587 SSL: STARTSSL Authentication: Normal Password
However, when TB attempts to authenticate the account I get "Configuration could not be verified - is the username and password correct?"
I have logged into the account via MS Outlook as well as via the outlook.com web app and verified the user ID and password are correct. I have telnet'd to the individual imap and smtp servers and established a connection so I know I can see the servers via the listed ports.
Thinking it might be a Linux Mint issue - I downloaded TB on a windows7 machine. Same issue. I then tried creating a TB account using my g-mail address figuring I'd try some other servers. All worked fine, found the servers, authenticated and downloaded my mail. I was also able to send messages from this account. Back to the Linux Machine, I did the same thing with the g-mail account and had similar success.
So I think I have isolated it to TB authentication issues with outlook.com but I have no idea how to fix it.
Would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Being a good Linux N00B, I've read until my eyeballs are ready to fall out but haven't found the solution.
Thank you

I am trying to switch from Outlook 2007 to Thunderbird. Everything is great so far, but I need to import my old emails from Outlook. When I go to Tools>Import>Mail I get options for Eudora, Outlook, and Outlook Express. The options for Eudora and Outlook are greyed out. The option for Outlook Express is available, but that's not even a option for me since I am using Windows 7.
I read some articles and they noted that you must still have Outlook installed and set as the default mail client. I have made sure that Outlook is set as the default mail client but the import option is still greyed out. I have tried restarting both Outlook and Thunderbird. I have also tried importing with Outlook open and closed.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am having a couple of problems with Thunderbird (very slow recovery after I delete an email and inability to retrieve gmail emails) which lead me to want to uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird on my computer. If I do that, will all my emails (folders and subfolders) be retained, or do I have to do something to ensure that they are saved? I've read a bunch of articles about backing up profiles, but frankly, I find that pretty confusing, as I don't know what all is included in a profile and whether I have different ones for my main (non-gmail) email and gmail. If uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird can be done without deleting all the emails, I'd just as soon do that. Is it practical? Thanks!
