Google has announced that after May 30, 2022 third-party apps that log into google with account name and password (which I assume includes Thunderbird) will no longer be able to do so, as they will enable 2-step verification. I currently and for years have used Thunderbird to pick up my mail from 5 accounts, 3 of which are gmail accounts. Will I be able to continue using Thunderbird after May 30, 2022? I have been unsuccessful getting any helpful information from google itself. They don't have a list of "trusted" third party apps that will continue to work with them. Anything people know about this will be helpful to me and appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I have several Gmail accounts. I have been using Thunderbird for many years. POP3 I keep everything on my Desktop. I just got this from Google and I'm at a loss. Anyone have any idea if or how it will affect Thunderbird's login?

Google On May 30, you may lose access to apps that are using less secure sign-in technology ??????@gmail.com To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account (Link to my account) using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0.

What do you need to do?

Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google.

TB 91.7.0 (64-bit I used to send/rcv gmail no problm, started having issues ~ Oct 2021 I then setup a 3rd party app password in gmail account for thunderbird. That allowed me to Send Gmails, but, not receive it kept asking for password. Then I read to use OAuth2 and saw that Google will no longer allow 3rd party app passwords, so i deleted it in google, and set both Imap.gmail.com and smpt.gmail.com to use OAuth2 (both set for SSL/TSL). I did this just for smpt first when the 3rd party app password was still enabled, i could recv but, when i went to send, it would ask for password, i enter it, then it would sent msg to my cell phone to Allow thunderbird, i would press Allow on my phone, and Thunderbird would come up with Sending message.. with the progress marked all way to end BUT, it will never complete sending.... I have to hit cancel it then shows Failed message unable to authenticate. After I deleted the 3rd party app password in gmail settings, now when i start thunderbird or try to receive emails, it goes through the same authorization process with my phone, but, then never downloads any new emails. I have spend HOURS on this.. extremely frustrated (I have been forced to us ms mail which i really don't like, i am too used to thunderbird (although I wished thunderbird had check boxes on emails to select via checkboxes for delete, or moving, etc)

Getting a popup now every time Thunderbird tries to sign into gmail. It says "Sign in with your Google Account" but nothing works when I put in my id or email. There's no response. T-bird is set up properly and uses oauth2; this just began happening. Less secure apps is on but that's being stopped, so looks like I won't be able to use gmail anymore.

I tried deleting my gmail a/c and now I can't create one. I can't get past that "credentials needed" popup.

How can I get T-bird to work with gmail?

For weeks, I have been searching everywhere for a definitive method for transferring my Thunderbird 91.8.1 profile to a new PC. There are lots of posts mainly covering windows applications and older versions of Thunderbird. One reoccurring problem seems to be that some installations have 2 profiles. Some have a profile with just a xxxxxxxx.default profile and others have a xxxxxxxx.default-release and a xxxxxxxx.default profile. It would appear that if you have the 2 profiles then the .default-release would be the one you would use for transferring to a new PC. I was wondering if some one could lead me to a current definitive procedure, for transferring a Linux based Thunderbird 91.8.1 profile, from one PC to new Linux PC . What to do if you have the 2 profiles? Can you just delete the yyyyyyyy.default profile?

Perhaps some one could comment on the following procedure that I have cobbled together from the myriad of posts that I have read.

THIS IS MY VERSION (UNPROVEN) Transfer Thunderbird (91.8.1) profile to new PC [v_4]

On your SOURCE computer [Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3]

       1. Connect a device for data transfer, either a USB flash drive, or a USB SSD/HDD drive.
       2. Open the Home directory and click the “View tab” then check the box “Show Hidden Files”.

       3. You should find a directory called .thunderbird.
       4. Open .thunderbird and look for the folder, xxxxxxxx.default-release. Note; the x represents a string of 8 random alpha/numerical text.
       5. Right-click on the xxxxxxxx.default-release folder and select Copy.
       6. Paste a copy of xxxxxxxx.default-release to your transfer device. Remove it safely from the source computer when done.
       7. Uncheck the “Show Hidden Files” tab that you checked in step 2.

Note: a) These steps can also be used to create a backup of your Thunderbird profile folder.

         b) In step 4, you may not find a default-release folder. You may see a xxxxxxxx.default or
both. Choose the one that is active.

On your DESTINATION computer [Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.3]

       1. Open thunderbird and then close it. A new profile will be created yyyyyyyy.default-release, or .yyyyyyyy.default.
       2. Locate and open the backed-up profile folder, xxxxxxxx.default-release.
       3. Select all of the folder contents and choose Copy.
       4. Locate and open the new profile folder, yyyyyyyy.default-release.
       5. Paste the contents of the backed up profile folder into the new profile folder. Choose to overwrite existing files of the same name.
       6. Start Thunderbird.

Hi, I am trying to help my dad get his local folders and address book back. His computer was running very slow so I had him to a basic reset of the computer, deleting apps but keeping files. After it rebooted and we redownloaded thunderbird he had lost all folders that were kept in the "Local folders" tab on thunderbird. I have spent 4+ hours trying to see if they are hidden on the computer somewhere but I haven't had any luck trying to find them. I have found a couple of folders but when I try to open them it comes up with an error message saying that the folder's location is unavailable - "E:\Boat is unavailable" - He can still get emails, send emails, and put new emails into new local folders that are newly created but I can't find his old local folders or the files that were inside of them. I thought they would be synced to his thunderbird account but I guess not? I did take a back up of all of his files that were kept in his File explorer but that did not seem to hold the local folders that were kept on thunderbird. He has also lost his address book and I have no idea how to try to get that back. Thunderbird is not my strong suit to say the least. Any help would be appreciated, is there any way to recover the files? Are the local folders and the files inside of them lost?

I just installed Thunderbird on Windows 11 home. Everything seems to work, added my e-mail accounts, it downloads e-mails, but nothing actually displays, no inbox, no folders. The calendar and task list seems to work, though I do not use them. I have tried turning off hardware acceleration, re-installing Thunderbird, and making sure I had the latest, but still the same.

I have spent the last two days trying to re-establish receiving/sending emails on my Apple MacBook Pro using Thunderbird without success. This problem developed suddenly about 3 or 4 days ago and only affects the MacBook, not any other device (I have an iMac and two iPads). I have gone through the instructions in Thunderbird's support pages and those in Mozilla with no success.

How do I fix this please? Would the easiest way be to simply delete the account xxxxxxx.gmail.com from Thunderbird on my MacBook and re-instate it by adding it back in?

All the setting for IMAP and SMTP are correct and the username/password is identical on all my devices.

I have received notices from Google for all of my Gmail accounts that I have on Thunderbird that beginning in May 2022, an id and password will no longer be supported for "certain" apps. I am not sure if this includes Thunderbird - both for email and for calendar? Does it include Thunderbird and what must be done on Thunderbird to continue receiving email and calendar updates?

Lately I'm having trouble with my connection with outlook. I use a free outlook email address. Sometimes (not always) when starting Thunderbird, I get the "user authenticated but not connected" warning. After a while it's working again.

I have tried several settings but can't figure out what solves this issue.

I'm using port 993 / SSL/TLS and authentication method is set to normal password.

Most of the times this works.

When I switch to OAuth2, I get the Microsoft screen to login to my work / school account which I do not have.

I've search the web to find a solution for this but I can't find it. Hopefully someone can help me out because it drives me "nuts" ;)

Have an existing Gmail account that was working great for years with TB, now each time I try to open TB I get the error:

Login to account ".......@gmail.com failed with three boxes with these options:

Retry Enter New Password Cancel

Retry gives same error as above

Enter New passsword for .........@gmail.com is entered then OK (the correct password is there already) then same error as above!!!

In the email server settings for setting up Gmail to work with TB the instructions say:

Use the table below to update your client with the correct information. For help updating your settings, search your email client's Help Center for instructions on setting up IMAP.

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

imap.gmail.com

Requires SSL: Yes

Port: 993

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

smtp.gmail.com

Requires SSL: Yes

Requires TLS: Yes (if available)

Requires Authentication: Yes

Port for SSL: 465

Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587 Full Name or Display Name Your name Account Name, User name, or Email address Your full email address Password Your Gmail password

HOWEVER in the actual setup there the options for Security Settings are different than the instructions above:

For Incoming Server

Connection Security:

None STARTLS SSL/TLS

and for Authentication Method:

Normal Password Encrypted password Kerberos/GSSAPI NTLM TLS Certificate OAuth2

and the same options apply to SMTP outgoing Server setup screens

my port number settings are correct my emailname is correct the password is correct the account is setup as IMAP the server name is imap.gmail.com and the outgoing server name is smtp.gmail.com

my security settings both incoming and outgoing servers are:

for connection security: SSL/TLS for authentication Normal password

There is NO option to choose "requires authentication:yes" as in the instructions to setup

but unable to send or receive gmail thru thunderbird

Please help what option under security and authentication works? for both incoming and outgoing servers?

Thank you

I have a POP3 account for my AT&T (Yahoo) server. I have Leave Messages On Server Until I Delete Them checked. I also changed the configuration to delete messages from the server when they are moved to another folder.

Moving or deleting the messages from the Inbox in TB is working (it deletes the messages from the server), however last night I discovered that when I send a message from TB, it makes a copy in the Sent folder on the server.

Deleting the messages from the Sent folder on TB leaves it on the Sent folder on the server. Also, deleting messages in TB puts them in the Trash folder on the server. When I delete messages from the Trash folder on TB, they still remain in the Trash folder on the server. I haven't tried emptying the TB Trash folder because I keep the last two months of messages there.

That all sounds confusing, but the bottom line is after I delete messages from the Sent and Trash folders in TB they are still in the Sent and Trash folder on the server. I had to go into the server last night to delete Sent and Trash messages going back to 2018. It wasn't always this way, I've been using TB since the 90's.
