Freezes while composing message Thunderbird 138/139, Windows 11, in safe mode and troubleshoot mode SOLVED by setting accessibility.force_disabled to 1 (bug1972457)

Thunderbird 138/139, Windows 11 Pro 23H2. While composing a message, after a few lines the app freezes. Both the compose window and the main TB window freeze. Only opening the Windows Task manager allows me to close them. This did not happen with earlier versions.

If I save the message every few seconds while composing I can get most of the message back and continue after restarting TB. This behavior is the same in both the normal and troubleshooting TB modes. I can't even find a crash log to send to Mozilla.

Where shall I look next?

Thank you!

This is absolutely insane. I set up a email account(also did about a year ago) and I can not get back to my mail. Why in gods name is it so difficult? I have multiple email accounts with most all the major email websites and this one is utterly impossible to use. I just keep ending up in the same spot with no information to help get out of the endless circle. I don't even know if I could find my way back to here. I will give you my email address to try and get something more constructive than the past two days. I want to make mozilla products my main users for all my different platforms to simplify my life but I am having my doubts about thunderbird. So far it is a useless time waster. I'm shocked that this is under the Mozilla name. I normally associate Mozilla with high quality, easy to use products. My goal is to have all the phones, tablets,laptops, and desktops operating on linux and mozilla. Thank you in advance. X@yahoo.com

We have poor eyesight, so in vertical display mode, we could really benefit from having grid lines (at least horizontally) to visually distinguish each message. We have read various solutions on the Internet, but none seems to work at least not in dark theme mode, which is the default for a great many people with vision impairments (or just plain tired eyes). Perhaps some solutions that once worked have been uprooted, so to speak, during the course of Thunderbird updates.

We are used to having grid lines in Outlook (desktop). We are currently exploring switching to Thunderbird, but it needs to support our vision needs. For us, this capability is fundamental, not optional.

We are comfortable making config entries, creating and working in userChrome.css, and the like. We would be grateful for any guidance in this regard.

Thank you kindly!

Much of Thunderbird is too small, too faint, or in fonts that are too hard for me to read.

I've found some user css that helps with some of that. It helps with the headers and lists. But it doesn't affect message contents, even in plain text mode, or settings.

Okay, so why don't I just use the built-in font settings? Because:

1. There are different settings for different parts of the interface, and it can be hard to predict how they'll interact.

2. I need to increase the size of most text, not all. I don't want or need to increase the sizes of some larger text. I don't have enough screen space for it either.

3. I need to increase the *weight* of most text. There's a fad for thin "elegant" fonts, and I just can't read these. I currently use css to make headers bold, and make unread headers red for contrast.

4. I often need to change the fonts, too. Thunderbird seems to use the "Other Writing Systems" for message contents, which is a pain, because I need to use that for another writing system, too.

With the new version of TB the address book has become unusable. It is not White Text on white background. I can't find any settings to reset or apply a theme or fix the colors of the text within the address book. There are many settings and themes that one could apply to the mailbox but if one can't see the address book that pretty much it useless to try to use the email.

How does one just set up the ENTIRE program to apply a theme? Or can we get a working White and Dark themes that address all Text and All backgrounds to make them legible so there are at least useful. TB has become very frustrating. Sorry to rant but before the big changes to use native Darkmode it was really good email client but like so many that try to embrace the darkmode trend (which isn't a bad idea) they are falling short of addressing the entire product.

Any help to address the color issues in the address book would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 on PC with Thunderbird 140.1.0esr (64-bit) Since the last update, the background on my Tbird messages list, email panel and in my compose email panel have turned from my eye-friendly light grey to glaring white and this is literally causing me a headache and a "flimmer" in my eyes (common in people with blue eyes). All other programs in Windows show me the light grey background as they should, it's Thunderbird itself which isn't picking up the light grey. The only place in all the tools and settings menus that I was able to find ANYTHING about background colour was (three bars) -> tools -> Settings -> HTML Style [ ] Use reader's default colours <- makes no difference whether this box is marked or not Beneath that: Text Colour is set to black. Background colour is set to light grey. There is no way to Save the settings page, so one presumes they are automatically saved. Restart (done several times) Thunderbird - still this blasted white background. I do not use HTML for emails, I use plain text. Could someone please tell me how I can get my light grey background back ?

How do I report an issue with the way NVDA and Thunderbird interact? When I tab, I can't out of a link, and the focus does not move. If I tab to a link in a message then arrow down, I am where I expect, but then if I go to the top of the message, the tab focus remains where it was when I last hit the tab key. This is not standard behavior, but everyone else I've talked to seems to think it's behaving normally and has no tips for me on how to fix it.

I am a person with dyslexia and their a lot of people with this problem . more than you would think . The one thing that I think would be nice is to have a speech to text as part of Thunderbird . It would be a big help to us with dyslexia . Thank you for letting me bend your ear .

Does anyone have an option or work around for enabling high contrast without me having to roll back my version or install a different email client?

I have trouble with the lack of clear outlines in Thunderbird.

In particular:

1. the lack of a line between the message header and the message body makes it harder to find the right spot to scroll messages

2. the lack of a line between the nav-sidebar and each section in settings means I *cannot* scroll settings without getting migraines from the @#$%% nav-sidebar. I have to tab several times and then page down.

I can't enable a high-contrast theme within Thunderbird. I can enable it at system level, but it breaks many other apps, and it breaks my cursor and highlight color settings, and I have to recreate those settings each time.

I can search for "contrast," or "outline," under themes, for example: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/search/?q=outline&cat=themes&appver=148.0&platform=WINNT

I can't tell which themes are supposed to fix what; I tried 4 of the resulting themes, some added other outlines, but none added the needed outlines I listed above.

I get a reasonable number of TEAMS & Zoom invites by email into my Firefox account.

I have 2 questions ...

1. Can I add Google Calendar to FireFox Calendars ..... or vice versa ... so I can add an invite to FireFox calendar and have it show in Google Calendar.

2. Currently if the invite includes an .ics file I can import that into Google Calendar ..... clunky, but works. However many invites do not include an .ics file ..... as the invfite has arrived in FireFox .... can that generate an .ics file ?

I need to use Google Calendar as it provides cross platform support of multiple calendars.

I have visual issues and cannot read thin text. I am trying to set up a Windows machine where it defaults to thin text. Yes, both Windows and Thunderbird allow users to increase font size and scaling, but I don't have enough screen size. It's much more helpful to increase font weight, and only somewhat increase some font sizes.

I already have /* Global UI font */

  • { font-family: Andika !important; }
  • { font-size: 12pt !important; }
  • {font-weight: bolder !important;}

Which makes the message list good and bold, and

  1. threadTree tr[data-properties~="unread"] {

color: red !important; }

Which distinguishes unread messages.

But for whatever reason, the fix doesn't extend to the messages or the settings page.
