I have been using Thunderbird for many years. I have 4 accounts that have all been set up and working fine. This morning the 2 yahoo.com accounts stopped working. I logged in to the impacted accounts using a web browser and password just fine. I then updated Thunderbird to 116.0 to see if that would fix the problem, but it did not. The outlook and gmail accounts are working fine, for now.

When Thunderbird attempts to download mail for the yahoo accounts, I get a large pop-up window with "Edge: Too Many Requests". The pop-up window is blank except for that error message. I get the small pop-up with the Authentication Failure message. Sometimes I get Retry, Enter Password or Cancel. But I never see a window that will allow me to enter my password.

I can send/receive mail from the accounts while logged in via a browser but authentication fails within Thunderbird.

I am trying to upgrade from 128 esr version to the new 139 version. I tried several ways to transfer data from the old version to the new version - I tried to export and import a the Thunderbird zip file. I also tried to open profile manager and creating a new profile that refers to a copy from my old version. Nothing has worked. In the old Thunderbird 128 version, if I select Help and Troubleshooting Information and then Open Folder next to the Profile Folder I get an error in Thunderbird that it can’t find my profile. I get the same error message when I go to Tools, export and select "open profile folder." This in spite of the fact that the old version continues to correctly display my contacts, tasks and events

After several hours of this, I finally decided to download version 139 using the standard Mozilla set up even though my Thunderbird 128 version is located someplace else. So, at this time I have two working versions of thunderbird on my computer – the old 128 version with all my data and the new 139 version with no data.

I think I need help figuring out which Profile has my contact, calendar and task data. Then I need help getting it to the new version.

Thanks

Luke

Hi Thunderbird,

Windows would not let me keep any apps when I upgraded to Windows 11 so I am having to set up Thunderbird again. But I also had to sign into my Yahoo account again - and had to change the password. Now Thunderbird can find my address (<redacted>@yahoo.com) but it cannot verify the password.

I had an email I had to send today so had to download Outlook - against all my principles! Please, please, find a way I can get back to Thunderbird and expunge Outlook! I donate every month and have done for years. . .

Best wishes, Kitty

Thunderbird 138/139, Windows 11 Pro 23H2. While composing a message, after a few lines the app freezes. Both the compose window and the main TB window freeze. Only opening the Windows Task manager allows me to close them. This did not happen with earlier versions.

If I save the message every few seconds while composing I can get most of the message back and continue after restarting TB. This behavior is the same in both the normal and troubleshooting TB modes. I can't even find a crash log to send to Mozilla.

Where shall I look next?

Thank you!

This has happened the last two times I've tried to write a reply. I will be writing along and all of a sudden the screen dims and I get the blue circle thingy. Thunderbird locks up and doesn't come back but the red exit button is available. Of course, I lose all the reply I've written. I've never run into this error before and I've been using Thunderbird for years. I'm running v. 139.0.2 (64-bit) on a win-11 laptop, Firefox in the background but no other programs running. I clear my cache at the beginning of every month, so I did that this morning before starting any programs.

Thunderbird is freezing when I try to type a message into the new message window. It takes maybe 100 characters or so, then just freezes and requires ctrl-alt-del and end task to get out of it. This began with auto-installation of 140.0.1 as described below, and is 100% reproducible.

Environment: Windows 11 home 64 bit (specifically 2025-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems )

Running Thunderbird 140.0.1: Thunderbird 140.1.1esr was auto installed on July 10, 2025. Version history says that the install failed, but version showed as 140.0.1esr. This is when the problem began. On July 18th, I downloaded the release version of Thunderbird and installed that (140.0.1 - no esr). This did not resolve the problem. Troubleshooting info now shows 140.0.1 - no esr as the current version, but the update history does not show that upgrade/downgrade in the list, so I'm not sure it happened.

Things I have tried: Windows safe mode Thunderbird safe mode Clear caches Removed several mail accounts from Thunderbird

Below is system info from Thunderbird troubleshooting page.

 Application Basics
   Name: Thunderbird
   Version: 140.0.1

Thunderbird works perfectly except for just one thing. Every time I write any email it freezes after about 2 minutes. If it's a short email, it gets sent. If it's longer, before I can get to the end, the program freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to stop it. No problem receiving and reading emails. This started about a month ago.

I use Bitdefender, but it still happens with that off. Windows is up to date. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks.

This is an issue that cropped up with the last update to T-bird. It retrieves and displays emails as well as it always has, but now when composing an email reply, T-bird completely locks up, can't shut it down by any means other than using Task Manager and killing the process. Before killing it, though I expanded T-bird's processes, and it listed five instances, one of which read "Not responding." When this happens, the cooling fan in the laptop kicks into high gear, until shortly after I kill T-bird.

Needless to say, this is intensely annoying and inconvenient. I belong to an extremely busy recovery group, and email is my primary contact with them, so this makes things a royal pain. I've had to resort to hitting "Respond" to open a new email, then firing up the text editor to compose the reply, then cut/paste that in and send it. Workable, but really... it *was* working fine, and now it isn't, and I haven't changed a thing, Windows hasn't updated, no new apps or anything... it just stopped working.

I've tried a number of suggested fixes, such as removing all add-ons (removed, not disabled) and themes, creating a new account (which worked okay for about a week, then it too started locking up). About the only thing I haven't tried yet is uninstalling T-bird and re-installing it, which I'll do if I absolutely have to, but I'd rather not go through the hassle of rebuilding everything if there's any other way to fix this.

Is there any kind of information or file/s I can provide that someone may be able to make some sense of? I'd REALLY appreciate it. I've used T-bird since I had internet access (back when Alta Vista was still a thing), and I love it - - no other email app offers the breadth of features that T-bird does, even paid apps. I'd truly HATE to have to switch to something else over this!!

Thunderbird has worked fine for me for years on my Windows 10 Pro machine. The computer works perfectly otherwise--and has a large amount of RAM. But a few weeks ago, Thunderbird started freezing (stops responding) at some point while I'm writing a message.

What happens is that I'll start to write an e-mail message in Thunderbird, and at some random point (from a few seconds to a few minutes) it will stop adding what I'm typing, and soon the text that it was showing grays out. It will then say Thunderbird has stopped responding, and I have no other choice than to close Thunderbird. I have no way of saving or recovering the message I had been typing--very frustrating!

As a partial work-around, I found that if I click on "Save" every time I add a little more to the message I'm trying to write, then at least when I restart Thunderbird I can go to Drafts and recover the message (as it was the last time I clicked "Save").

Thunderbird still works fine for all other functions (reading received messages, etc.). It only has the stopping responding problem randomly when I'm trying to write a message. It can happen while I'm typing--or during a pause between writing sentences. And the timing of the problem is very random and variable (from almost immediate to a few minutes). I tried running Thunderbird in Safe mode, but the problem was the same...

I always keep up with Thunderbird updates. Currently, I'm using version 140.1.1esr.

Can you give me any help with a solution? This problem is maddening!

Thank you,

Great, so I fix one problem, only to be confronted with a shiny brand NEW problem.

Version 141.0

Fixed the "T-bird lockup" when composing emails, so that's no longer an issue - - YAY.

Now, Tbird refuses to save drafts. I had it set to every minute while I was having issues with lockups; now, I'm seeing a "can't save draft' popup every minute. I mean really... I haven't changed ONE thing in the machine other than changing that "0" to a "1" in "about:settings." Is there something about that particular fix that could cause this "save no drafts" issue?

Don't have a clue where to even begin, since it cites either network issues OR file-access issues, and I fail to see why either would suddenly be an issue where it wasn't prior to fixing the lockups.

Anyone have any pointers where to start looking? I keep seeing reference to Tbird "logs," but have no idea where to find those. Seems a reasonable place to start (after all, it's the first thing I look at when my 3D printer goes nuts!)

Hi,

I'm trying to move Thunderbird from my Windows 10 laptop to one where I just installed Linux (Zorin Pro 17.3). I followed the instructions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer

I installed Thunderbird 140.4.0 esr, which is the latest version. Both laptops now have that version installed.

But when I open TB on the Linux computer, and close the Account Setup window, and go to the Troubleshooting screen, next to "Profile Directory" it says "Open Directory", but when I click on that, nothing happens. So how can I paste my TB profile? Do I have to start a new profile first, and then copy over that?

I installed TB from the "Software" area, which I believe is a Flatpak. I'm very new to Linux, so just fumbling around here. There were 3 options of Thunderbird. I installed the one that had the most information and seemed most up to date. That was confusing.

I would LOVE some help on this.

Thanks!
