With just 2 email addresses that I have been using for years, I suddenly get this Undeliverable message when attempting to send emails using Thunderbird:

"The mail client submitted this message with bare line feeds, which cannot be sent via SMTP protocol DATA command and receiving system does not support BDAT"

I can receive emails from the 2 addresses fine, I just can't send to them through Thunderbird. When I sign in to Hotmail Outlook Live I can send and receive to these addresses with no problem.

I'm stumped! Any ideas? Can I reset Thunderbird?

Thanks

How to Fix It It appears that your email program added invalid characters (bare line feed characters) into your message when you sent it. Try using a different email program to send your message. This error occurs when the email program or device used to create or send an email message adds bare line feed characters into the message. When bare line feed characters are included in a message, the SMTP protocol chunking feature is required to transmit the message between email servers. Chunking uses the SMTP protocol BDAT command, but the recipient's email server doesn't support the BDAT command.

To fix the issue, the sender should send the message using an email program or device that doesn't add bare line feed characters to messages. Most modern email programs don't add bare line feed characters.

If the sender is using a device like a fax machine, printer, or scanner, it's likely an older model that doesn't support the SMTP protocol BDAT command. To fix this error, you'll need to replace the device with a newer model that supports the BDAT command. The industry standard recommendation to support SMTP chunking was published in 1998 so most devices manufactured during the last decade support this feature.

Another option is for the email admin at the recipient's domain to upgrade their email servers to servers that support the SMTP protocol BDAT command. Most modern email servers support BDAT; however, some free and older email servers don't support it."

I use GoDaddy.com as my ISP provider and they have ported all the accounts over to MS Outlook. It worked fine last week, and suddenly I'm getting this "Illegal characters" message. Any hints?

I have been using Thunderbird as my default email for years and have run into my share of issues. Out of nowhere, starting this morning, I am unable to send emails from Thunderbird at all. I spent about 2 hours on the phone with my service provider trying to figure it out. The unfortunate conclusion I have come to, is that unless you can fix this issue for me, I will be using Outlook going forward. Let me be clear, I HATE OUTLOOK! but I am running out of options other than to throw away the email address I have been using since about 1990.

This is the message I get when the email does not send. This particular one was to trs.ky.gov, but it doesn't matter who the recipient is, the only ones that don't get this message are those I send to myself.

Hi All,

Until yesterday(5 Aug 22) my Thunderbird with Office365 account was working fine. Suddenly from today, it started asking password and my correct password is not going through. I searched internet and found that it has something to do with Microsoft's updates on security.

I am attaching the error message. Is anybody facing the problem? How to solve this problem.

Thanks in advance

Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: stray newline detected. see http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html. Please check the message and try again.

I have not been able to fix the issue.

I can receive emails OK, but can't send as the above error reading stops the send

Hope you can assist in solving the problem. Note: fixing computer issues is somewhat of a challenge.

I had already post this problem recently, but in spite of Thunderbird already had two interim point releases 102.1.1 and today's 101.1.2, this problem remains.

This situation did not occur in older versions, and I cannot use pop3 access to AOL email account with "normal password" (encrypted). For the time being, I am accessing AOL web mail using Firefox.

I tried unsuccessfully all other authentication methods, so no authentication method is working with AOL.

This is the Thunderrbird error I get when using OAuth2 authentication method:

"The server does not support the selected authentication method. Please change the 'Authentication method' in the 'Account Settings | Server settings".

It is not true, AOL does support the OAuth2 authentication method.

For years I have been using "Fetch headers only" option. But beginning from version 102.1.1 "Download full message body" link doesn't work at all. Tested on multiple accounts on multiple PC-s. Older version 91 works fine, but I can't roll back because of database conversion. Now I actually can't use Thunderbird because I can't read incoming mails.

All suggestions found online recommend having recipients make changes to accept badly formed messages. We view that as totally impractical. Hi. Until I left on holiday, I was sometimes able to send an email to l***@skynet.be (or also to the associated accounts k***@skynet.be; l****@skynet.be and l *****@skynet.be) . Now, back from the trip, it doesn't work anymore: after a long time trying to send, I keep getting the same error message "Sending the trial failed because the connection to outgoing SMTP server realy.proximus.be failed... ." However, the settings are correct (see attachments) I can send mails directly from the proximus web server. Can also send emails without any problem from the Windows 10 mail app. Furthermore, it also works with the other gmail accounts; they are only refused with my subscription via server proximus (skynet.be)! This means that TB has now become completely useless for me! My details: user id: l***@skynet.be e-mail provider: proximus.be antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2022 - program version: 21.3.10.391 operating system: windows 10 home (64bits) - version 21H1 - Build: 19043.1826 Thunderbird version: 102.1.1 (64-bit)

Thanks for your help

The odd thing is it seems to go to casalemedia.com

Has anyone else noticed this just recently happening?

This morning Thunderbird reports compuserve server wrong authentication type, TB is set to OAuth2 which is correct and has been working. Everything was fine until TB downloaded latest version 102 on 8/2/22, now I can't receive/send emails. (Had Verizon which migrated to AOL and after dealing with that mess, finally got everything working up until now (8/2/22). My emails won't download, I get an error box saying "authentication server/settings are incorrect and need to change". Both smtp.aol.com and pop.aol.com settings have been OAuth2 since 2021 migration. Tried deleting my @verizon.net saved passwords and changing settings back to normal password - that didn't work; just keep getting additional error popups saying "login to server pop.aol.com with my email address can't be found". No problem getting emails on my iphone, just pc. I'm not a computer geek, if anybody can help, please keep it simple/step-by-step. Thank you!

Hello I am new to TB!

I use the automatic IMAP configuration and it gives the green message that it "finds the servers" though when I press done, it gives me an error message saying the incoming server already exists.

I use the manual IMAP configuration and enter in all my details from my server and re-test and it gives me the green message saying it "found the following settings by probing the server" though when I press done, it gives me an error message saying the incoming server already exists.

Where do I go from here to configure my email?!

Hi there, I am wondering how to create a launcher shortcut for the newest version of Thunderbird in Fedora/Gnome. I have downloaded the file, extracted it, and I am able to run Thunderbird from the executable. However, I'd like to have Thunderbird accessible from the launcher (gnome desktop). I can't find instructions for this for the latest version. (The newest version of Thunderbird is not available in the software centre nor by dnf install. I can only get version 91 by those methods). If there is a way to install the latest version by terminal, i would do that.
