Start new Windows session. Start Thunderbird and works OK. Shut Thunderbird down and try to re-start during same Windows session and it will not launch. Reboot Windows and try to start Thunderbird and works OK. Alternatively, going into Task Manager there will be a number of Thunderbird processes running. If I manually end them all (while Thunderbird is NOT active) then I can restart as normal too. This all began with 124.0 Beta 1. Never had the issue prior.

Also, Thunderbird crashes if restarting within the app. By this I mean clicking the X it appears to close (excepting those persistent processes running) but "Restart Thunderbird" such as to launch Troubleshooting mode or from the "Restart to update Thunderbird" config crashes the app with 100% consistency.

I use dark mode (Windows 10 Pro, Thunderbird 115.4.2 (64-bit)). Fresh installation, fresh profile. When I reply to some emails, the reply text is not visible. The examples I saw were with a light (white?) background, but I'm not sure if it also happens with other backgrounds. But it's not all white backgrounds either, some emails with a light background I can reply to just fine.

The reply area can be dark with a dark grey font (slightly different color), or it can be white with a white font. In both cases, obviously the text I type is not readable.

Any idea how to fix this?

I sent a message a while back about slowness with 115, which I had to download because I had a crash.

There were various suggestions, but no solutions to the excessive slowness with 115. This culminated to day in a long 'no reply' mail which suggested the issue might be the virus checker.....

I checked again the various messages about 115 - most were archived, only one month since they were posted!!

Is there an issue with 115?? I saw a thread which asked was I having issues with it, my answer is yes, is there nobody out there with a suggestion??

This is probably a mess of my own making, having been lazy about back ups. My laptop threw a critical error at me just before Christmas and I could only fix it by doing a reset and reload of Windows 10. (I think it may have been a partial HDD corruption) I selected the option to retain personal data files etc, but the reload wiped almost all my installed programs, including Thunderbird. Documents, etc folders have all survived. I re-installed the latest Thunderbird and it is working fine. However, I appear to have lost my Local Folders (as well as my address book) Not a life-or-death matter, but I would prefer to recover them, if possible. I have an "..@tiscali.co.uk" (TalkTalk) email account, with IMAP settings on the incoming mail and SMTPS on "sent" items. I can see all incoming emails that are still on the server, but the "sent" items folder is empty. All local folders and contents are gone. I have read up on the Thunderbird Profile and understand that it is separate from the program folder. I have used the "Help>Troubleshooting>..." feature to find that my current profile is "zqx......default-release". Using file search, it also indicates that there is another profile file, "k32....j5.default", in the same area. Both have creation dates corresponding to the reload time. I cannot find anything similar in the "Windows.old" folder that was created at the time of the reload. Is it possible that the folder contents are still in the HDD and it is just the file address that is lost? Thanks. Neil

Upon initial setup, Thunderbird says the ISP is recognized and auto-populates all the settings. Well of course these settings don't work and I'm unable to log in and receive some sort of message saying it didn't work. If I login using a browser via cellphone, I'm provided with the list of settings to use with email clients which is as follows:

Domain: @hot.rr.com SSL: On for SMTP and IMAP Protocol: IMAP Incoming Server: mail.twc.com Incoming Server Port: 993 Outgoing Server: mail.twc.com Outgoing Server Port: 587 Requires Authentication: Yes, or checked

Using these settings in manual configuration results in receiving the "Thunderbird Failed To Find the Settings For Your Email Account" message. The only difference between the settings that were auto-populated and the settings provided by logging in via web browser on a cellphone are the incoming/outgoing servers. Auto-population had them as mobile.charter.net, and they're listed as mail.twc.com by the email provider to use with email clients.

I'm trying to solve this problem for someone else and they happen to have the same email domain as me so I can fiddle with it without having to be at their computer with their passwords, etc. Presumably if I'm able to find the solution it will work for both of us. I don't normally use Thunderbird or any other email client, I just use web based email but they prefer to use a client. However, I'm doubtful that it will work considering the fact that settings provided by the email provider don't work.

Any input is appreciated.

Compact Now keeps popping up when I am trying to get other things done. I more often than not just cancel out of it, but it's annoying and distracting and interrupts my flow. At times, I do click on it to perform the compacting task, but them everything comes to a standstill. I can't delete messages, can't move them to other folders, can't answer emails. Nothing. I have large folders full of emails that I have kept from years ago, so it takes it a long time to finish compacting. Meanwhile, I am left stranded, unable to complete the tasks that need to be seen to. Is there any way that I can opt out of getting these compact now pop-ups? I am running Windows 7 Ultimate sp1, with Thunderbird 91.4.0 Thank you!

I successfully sent my last email on 26Oct21. Ever since,I cannot send email. I get the following message when I try to send: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.shaw.ca failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

I have tried everything suggested on this forum and other online help sites. One source suggested trying to ping my email server, and that failed as well. I tried temporarily reducing the TLS to 1.1,but that didn't help. I tried temporarily disabling my Windows antivirus and firewall, but that didn't work. I am at a loss on how to proceed, and am planning to take my desktop to a local computer repair shop to see if they can figure it out. Can you suggest anything that might help? Thanks very much!

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Recently, a weird problem developed on my Thunderbird. I can delete maybe 7 or 8 emails, and suddenly nothing else will delete. I can press the delete button and nothing happens. The only resolution is closing Thunderbird and reopening.

I have followed these steps: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-delete-messages#:~:text=Close%20Thunderbird.,Select%20the%20Trash%20and%20Trash.

And it did not resolve the problem.

Any other ideas?

Lately, I noticed that TB is quite slow at loading messages so I looked up for a solution and found that compacting folders could help a bit. The problem is that when I tried to compact some folders TB started to write hundred of GBs to disk completely filling my ssd and ultimately failing with a 'not enough disk space error'.

I don't think this is supposed to happen. Can I fix my inbox or should I start from scratch?

I have over 200,000 emails on a gmail account I'm hoping to sync with Thunderbird. My goal is to have them all downloaded onto a local server on my computer so I can refer to them all offline. I've been periodically pressings "get messages" which used to download messages 1000 at a time (I'm not sure why it doesn't continually sync with my inbox!) Though, sometimes it would download 2-3 at a time which was frustrating and fairly futile. Now, it's stopped downloading entirely. How do I keep syncing my inbox?

I have version 91.6 and have major problems: 1. It constantly freezes up - Almost every time I try to open an email the error message "Thunderbird is freezing" comes up. Sometimes it will be 3-4-5 minutes. 2. Every time I open it up, it asks for email password for each account. I put password in AND "SAVE" for each email account (4). I know they are there as when I go to settings and check on passwords, they are shown. But Thunderbird will still ask me evrytime. I will enter password and end up hitting "retry" 4-5-6 or more times before it will download my emails. I have wasted hours every day on downloading and trying to read my emails. I have so many folders filled with emails that I need to keep for followup from the last 3-4 years since Win10 would not let me use Eudora anymore or I would switch to Mail or Outlook. I had Eudora for over 20 years and had less problems in total over that time than I have every day with Thunderbird. I have reinstalled program several times over the past few months hoping to solve problem to no avail. To make sure it was not TWC or my computer, I tried Outlook. Whhat I got was instant downloads, no hesitations and instant opening of the email. If I did not hve to keep my old messages, I would switch, BUT, in this day and age of technology, I don't understand why Thunderbird ahs so many problems

Struggling with TB constantly "downloading" x 10s of thousands of 10s of thousands of emails (all of which are downloaded), and the programme grinding to a halt. Have set the inboxes to a retention policy of 2500 total. So shouldn't even be trying to DL more than that. Seems to mainly manifest when I compose an email (exactly the time that the sluggishness is a problem). Have done the usual compacting/deleting * files.

This is getting to be a real issue now. I wonder if there's any paid support channels that can deal with this?

Thunderbird asked to compact folders saying it would save hundreds of MBs of disk space, I accidently clicked "compact now" instead of just ignoring it as I usually do. As a result, Thunderbird deleted all mail on my Inbox folder - after restarting Thunderbird, my inbox was empty, I also checked the mail folder on my file explorer and the "Inbox" file (no extension) was just a few KBs, whereas previously to Thunderbird deleting it was several MBs. There were no errors reported during the "compact" process.

I don't think I can recover the mail that Thunderbird deleted because the mail server does not seem to keep mail older than 12 months. One of the reasons I used Thunderbird was to be able to keep a local copy of older emails.

The pop-up I received was the one shown in this article by Mozilla: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders

The article explicitly says "compact" does not delete mail, but then explains that it actually does (by not moving mail "moved or marked as deleted" to the a new file, and deleting the old file). I had no such "marked as deleted" mail. It was just plain read mail on my Inbox folder.

This is an Office 365 POP account. Thunderbird's retention policy for the Inbox folder was to use my (Thunderbird) account's policy, which was to never delete any mail. Alas, when I hit "compact now", Thunderbird deleted all my mail. I was running Thunderbird 91.6.1 on Windows 10.

I tried making a backup of all Thunderbird related folders and deleting the "popstate" file to download all mail from the server again. Mail got downloaded, but not all - as I mentioned, the mail server only returns 12 month worth of email, whereas I had years of mail stored locally. I don't see any way of recovering it... Why would Thunderbird just delete all mail calling it "compact"? Makes no sense...
