I got an email from Microsoft saying my Live.com or Outlook.com email accounts won't be supported in Thunderbird UNLESS I change the settings to OAuth2 in incoming and outgoing server settings.

I even REMOVED the email account and re-added it making sure it was OAuth2.

But for my live.com & outlook.com email accounts I continually get prompts for passwords from Thunderbird. Sometimes I can't even click the RED X at the upper right to shut the prompt down. I just happens over and over until I give it what it wants.

I am tempted to shut down all Microsoft email accounts and switch to Gmail.

I have Thunderbird version 115.12.2 (64-bit) I used Windows 11 23H2 build 22631.3810 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1020.0

Any idea how to stop these prompts?

I like Thunderbird much more than any other email program I have ever used, and would like to keep it

Microsoft 365 SMTP server intermittently rejecting connections

I've been running Tbird on Windows for many years. About 2 weeks ago something changed, either in Tbird or at Microsoft, which stops me from sending to the Office 365 SMTP server. I can send and receive using Outlook on the Office website, but I can't send locally from Tbird. Error message screenshot herewith. I have tried every possible permutation of server settings, which currently are:

Server name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 Security: START/TLS Authentication: OAuth2

MS support says these are correct, and they are at wits' end to understand what is going on. They asked me to ask Tbird support, so I am.

I should add that at about the same time I started getting SMTP rejections in Gmail on my Android phone, and miraculously that was corrected yesterday, without any action from me. There is something odd going on at Microsoft - does anyone know what it is? My other accounts on Tbird work fine of course.

SMTP/Sending Emails just stopped working

Hi there - been using Thunderbird for donkeys (since it was Eudora!). A few weeks back I started to get messages from Microsoft that I needed to change security settings as they were no longer supported on 3rd party email handlers like Thunderbird. So I re-created the three accounts I had there and it seemed to be OK, though SMTP did not have the OAUTH2 option available ... and when I tried to use the new SMTPs they wouldn't work. So I reverted to the old settings there and it worked again.

But this morning, with the big update to Thunderbird Nebula, I can no longer send emails from the MS accounts. My Gmail one is still OK ... but whatever I try, I cannot get the MS ones to send emails - I get a failure connecting.

Login to server smtp-mail.outlook.com with username xxxxx@hotmail.com failed.

I checked on MS and the details shown there:

SMTP server name smtp-mail.outlook.com SMTP port 587 SMTP encryption STARTTLS Authentication Method OAuth2/Modern Auth

Are what I have (I did have a different SMTP Server name came up - smtp.office365.com - but that doesn't work either)

So ... where is the issue? Is this a bug in the new Thunderbird setup? Something else? I don't know where to go ...

I use SMTP settings

Description: smtp.office365.com Server Name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 User Name: mypersonalaccout@hotmail.com Authentication method: OAuth2 Connection Security: STARTTLS

but TB is incapable of sending email. Either I got dialog https://software9119.technology/__other/tb/dialog.png or error https://software9119.technology/__other/tb/timed-out.png.

I tried cleaning cache and made some re+/search with no avail. There seems to exist some Authenticated SMTP but this is only available on Exchange 365 while this is my personal Outlook.com account.

Same question had Bill Swartout at 1/9/24, 2:30 PM with no answer, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1423404#answer-1629472.

I just noticed that the 'Sent Items" folder on one of my accounts in Thunderbird has gone missing. The folder and all messages are still on the outlook.office365.com server when I go to the web mail page. How do I force Thunderbird to recreate the folder and re-download messages from the server?

For what it's worth, my other Office 365 based account in Thunderbird is just fine. No issues.

Thunderbird 102.4.1 on Windows 10.

Thanks.

From the article "Microsoft OAuth Authentication and Thunderbird in 2024" there is a screenshot showing a OAuth2 option for the SMTP server setting with STARTTLS connection security. It does not appear for me. There are only the five options, as shown in the screenshot. How do enable the option to be available in the drop-down list or set it?

The available options are:

No Authentication Normal Password Encrypted Password Kerberos / GSSAPI NTLM

I am on Thunderbird version 115.12.1 (64-bit), Windows 11, version 23H2, build 22631.3737

Hi - I have TB running on Ubuntu 22.04, accessing a 365 mailbox (using a company tenant account with our own email domain name). As Microsoft now enforce OAuth2, I have changed the security settings accordingly - but whenever TB tries to access the mailbox, the OAuth2 dialog which appears is as shown in the attached screenshot (email address edited), with labels and buttons missing. If I type the password into the dialog, I see the usual star characters appear as I type - but when I press <Enter> nothing happens. So I'm unable to connect to the mailbox. I have the same mailbox set up in TB on another Ubuntu machine (20.04), on the same LAN, and it works fine - the authentication dialog appears with the buttons and text, and allows me to connect to the mailbox. (TB is authorised as a mail client in our tenant account and for my mailbox.) I have removed and re-added the mail account, using all the recommended 365 settings (which are the same on the other, working machine), with the same result - the authentication dialog is missing text and buttons as in the screenshot, and does nothing. Cookies are enabled in TB. I've looked around for any similar reports and can't find anything - does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Nik

New Thunderbird Version 115.0 Every time Thunderbird checks for new messages, there is a popup relating to "login to my hotmail account". There is no prompt for an actual password as it is saved in the profile settings. The popup stays on screen for 3 seconds and is very annoying. This never happened with any of the previous versions. It also happens when I click "Get Messages", and it doesn't matter which one of my many inboxes has the focus. Image attached.

Dear support,

I am an Azure AD admin and recently we have been receiving ticket that some users cannot connect with they Thunderbird clients to our Exchange Online mailboxes.

Because MS turn off the basic authentication I had to created/register an Azure app with the normal API permissions for POP,IMAP,offline_access and SMTP. After that in 2023 January I also had to delete and register again the app because of a major change.

Everything fine until now, where I did try it also out and the account is not connecting to the exchange online server.

I followed you article precisely and did all the steps but no success: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/microsoft-oauth-authentication-and-thunderbird-202

1 - Delete the app and re-registered via the Link and as admin I have granted it to the entire company 2 - I did make a clean install of Thunderbird and deleted all profiles and created a new one.

Also via Config Editor removed all 4 entries with *auth2.scope at the end.

I've spent 5 hours trying to make it work.

Is the connection to M365 still supported ?

best regards, Mihai

thunderbird all of a sudden after many years now unsubscribes me from folders each time it launches

this only does this to my microsoft account and I can re-subscribe but I will have to use another product before I re-subscribe each time I launch. only trash and inbox remain.

your default search on forums does not answer this so don't bother with a link unless it address this specific issue. I am not here to fix your product nor search for fixes with your products issue.

do you know how to resolve this issue?
